Man who stole cash from hundreds of ATMs jailed
A man who stole money from hundreds of cash machines across England has been jailed for more than two years.
Andrei Matei stole more than £19,000 by using a tool to jam cash dispensers open, West Yorkshire Police said, allowing him to take money from inside.
The 35-year-old Romanian national, of Failsworth, Greater Manchester, stole from more than 480 cash machines in locations including West Yorkshire, London, Wiltshire, Nottinghamshire and Berkshire, causing damage valued at £30,000.
Appearing before Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, Matei was sentenced to 27 months in prison after admitting 483 charges of theft and criminal damage.
He will also be deported once he has been released, the force said.
The investigation started in West Yorkshire, but officers from the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit later established Matei and an accomplice were also targeting cash machines further afield.
Matei, of Oldham Road, was arrested in Nottinghamshire in September 2023, police said.
During 2023, he targeted machines at supermarkets, garages and on shopping streets in Huddersfield, Bradford, Nottingham, Newbury, Salisbury, Bath, Bristol, Devizes, London and Stopsley.

Teenager stabbed to death in fight named by police
A man who was stabbed to death in a fight outside a shop in Bradford has been named by police. Mohammed Junaid Khan, 19, from Bradford, died at the scene while two other men, aged 24 and 27, received stab wounds following the incident on Loughrigg Street, off Newton Street in West Bowling, on Friday. West Yorkshire Police previously said three of the eight men arrested - one aged 18 and two aged 24 - were being questioned on suspicion of murder. Two 27-year-old men and two men, aged 24 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of affray, and a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. One of the 27-year-old men arrested on suspicion of affray also received a stab wound to the chest and remains in a serious condition in hospital. 'A homophobic attack brought our town together'
A town has held its first Pride event in response to a homophobic attack on a man as he was leaving a pub. Holmfirth Pride 2025 took place on Saturday and Sunday after being organised by residents Hilary Bowyer and Isobel Heely. The festival included activities such as a rainbow scavenger hunt, drag bingo, and an exhibition of queer art featuring local artists. Business owner Ms Heely, said the event was organised after a man in his 20s was attacked by five men outside The Old Bridge on Norridge Bottom on 12 April. She said: "As a close-knit community, we were all horrified when we heard about the incident and did not want anybody to feel like we were not supportive. "We did not want people to think that this is the sort of thing that happens here and we wanted to show it does not represent us as a community. "All of the 65 businesses in the town have got bunting up and people are leaving their mark in the streets with chalk to show that there is acceptance and we are welcoming to all." Ms Heely added the positive response to the event had "had me in tears" as it had shown how the "community has really rallied together". She said: "It has been heartwarming to see such a positive response to something negative. "We've had six weeks to pull the project together to make sure it was ready for Pride month and were lucky to get funding from the parish council and Kirklees Council. "The response has been so great that we're planning to hold the event again next year. "We just want to send a message that everybody belongs and we will not tolerate hate." The attack left the victim with facial injuries after being punched and kicked by the group, who had also made offensive slurs to the victim and his partner, and was investigated as a hate crime by West Yorkshire Police. Motorcyclist in critical condition after crash
A motorcyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in Grimsby on Saturday afternoon, Humberside police said. Officers said a pillion passenger also sustained serious injuries and was receiving treatment in hospital. The force said a blue Kawasaki motorcycle was travelling along Heneage Road towards Welholme Road at about 14:20 BST when it was involved in a collision with a BMW near to the junction with David Street. Police said emergency services attended the scene and the driver of the BMW was checked over at the scene for what were thought to be minor injuries. The force are appealing for any witnesses or people with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
