Oscar nominee clarifies comments about fellow contender's team 'tearing her down'

Yahoo30-01-2025

Karla Sofia Gascón, the star of Emilia Perez, has clarified her comments after accusing the social media team behind fellow Oscar contender I'm Still Here of undermining her.
Last week, Emilia Perez set a record for the most Oscar nominations for an international film and saw Gascón become the first openly trans actor to be recognised in an acting category by the Academy.
The Netflix musical has dominated awards season but it was joined in the Best Picture category with another foreign language film. Brazil's I'm Still Here was nominated for three awards including Best Picture, Best International Feature Film and Best Actress for Fernanda Torres.
However, Gascón has since claimed that the social media team behind the Brazilian film are working with Torres to 'tear me and Emilia Perez down'.
In an interview with the Brazilian newspaper, Folha de S Paulo, Gascón said: 'What I don't like are social media teams - people who work with these people - trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn't lead anywhere.
'You don't need to tear down someone's work to highlight another's. I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Perez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.'
In a statement since given to Variety, Gascón has clarified her comments stating that what she said did not extend to those 'directly associated' with Torres, but instead was aimed toward 'toxicity and violent hate speech on social media'.
'I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months,' she added. 'In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.'
Gascón went on to call Torres a 'wonderful woman and an amazing actress who deserves all the recognition in the world,' but admitted that she had not yet seen I'm Still Here.
The 52-year-old concluded: 'This isn't a competition. This is simply about people liking one's work or not. If [Torres] wins [the Oscar], great. If I win, same.'
Earlier this month, Torres won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama.

This Gritty Psychological Thriller Is the New #1 Film on Netflix (And It's Based on a True Story)

Gritty and intense are just a few of the words being used to describe A Widow's Game, a riveting thriller that has quickly shot its way to the top spot on Netflix. Based on a true story, the film centers around the mysterious events and investigations surrounding a man found dead under suspicious circumstances. The first person on the potential perpetrator list is his widow, which catches everybody off guard because nobody believes that she would be capable of the act of killing her husband in such a cruel manner. Things are never as they appear, however, and as it turns out, the story involves a number of secrets that leave everybody stunned. Directed by Carlos Sedes and starring Carmin Machi and Ivana Bacquero, the Spanish thriller is based on the factual events of a 36-year-old man named Antonio Navarro Cerdán, an industrial engineer who was ambushed and stabbed to death. And according to Rotten Tomatoes reviewers, the film is packed with twists and turns that don't disappoint. "The acting is excellent and the pacing is good, except for a short time in the middle where it focuses on the killer's POV. Looking at the story, the detective's method worked well," writes one Rotten Tomatoes reviewer, who gave the movie a 4-star rating. "I especially liked the actress who played the lieutenant," writes another. I've been looking for a new thriller to add to my watchlist this week, and A Widow's Game seems right up my alley…especially since it's the new number one film on Netflix. This Hit Keke Palmer and SZA Movie Has a Whopping 94 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes—and Now It's Getting a Sequel

One of Them Days is officially getting a sequel. The buddy comedy, starring Keke Palmer and SZA that proved to be a sleeper hit at the box office earlier this year, is back in action, according to an exclusive from Variety. The sequel, which Issa Rae is producing, is in early development at TriStar Pictures, and while details of the plot are being kept under wraps, both Palmer and SZA are expected to reprise their roles. One of Them Days debuted with a whopping 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release, narrowly beating out Mufasa for the number one box office spot over MLK weekend. (The film currently still has a 94 percent on RT.) It also reached the number one spot on Netflix when it made its streaming debut. In the movie, Palmer and SZA star as best friends and roommates, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). They encounter a day of dramatic chaos, as a young woman's boyfriend takes the rent money, putting them in a situation where they have to come up with $1,500 before the end of the day. Considered something of a modern female version of Friday, it also stars notable names like Janelle James, Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow and Katt Williams. One of Them Days was produced by Issa Rae in conjunction with her Hoorae Media production company and directed by Lawrence The Met Museum/Vogue Palmer served as an executive producer as well, telling The Cut in a January 2025 profile: "I had to really be specific about what needed to change, what the jokes were going to say, what story we're telling about where these two characters come from," she told the publication. "I was more than just an actor doing the role. I really cared about the project as a whole. The result is a surprisingly heartfelt buddy comedy that's also a story of gentrification, about community, about joy in the midst of hardship." In my review of the film, I wrote that one of the most enjoyable parts of the film was the slapstick comedy that wasn't traditionally "funny," but became humorous because of how ridiculous it was. And if the sequel follows that same model, it should prove to be just as successful. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here. 'Ginny & Georgia' Season 3 Ended with a Shocking Twist

*Warning: Spoilers ahead* Phew, where do I begin with season three of Ginny & Georgia? I mean, surprising twists are to be expected, especially after the season two cliffhanger where Georgia (Brianne Howey) is arrested for murder on the night of her wedding to Paul. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm mad at Georgia because I don't think she should have killed Cynthia's husband. Yes, he was terminally ill and a mere couple of weeks away from dying, but that wasn't Georgia's place to end his life prematurely, even if she thought she was doing Cynthia a favor. That said, we wouldn't have all of this drama had Georgia not done what she did, which has now resulted in her being charged and put on trial for first-degree murder. There are so many jaw-dropping moments this season, from Marcus telling Ginny he doesn't love her to Ginny getting pregnant with Wolfe's baby after their first time sleeping together. Still, nothing prepared me for that one wild plot twist: Ginny and her brother Austin conspiring to frame Austin's dad for the murder their mother committed. I definitely did not see that coming. Netflix And while this season was thrilling, I do have some questions. Austin's dad, Gil, is pretty evil, so what happens next? What if Austin gets called to the stand during his trial and cracks under cross-examination? Maybe I'm getting too far ahead, but, seriously, what now? Georgia is free, but Ginny's relationship with her brother is fractured, perhaps irreparably, because that was Austin's dad, and while Gil is a horrible person, the one honorable thing he seemed capable of was being a good father. On the other hand, Ginny still gets to have her dad in her life, so I predict this is something that will eventually cause Austin pain as well. Speaking of Ginny, I'm not fond of the way she treated Max at the end of the season finale, and I think that treatment is a preview of how she is becoming like her mother. The difference between Ginny and Georgia, however, is that Ginny has always lacked the natural charisma her mother possesses. As problematic as she might be, there is something about Georgia that makes you end up liking her despite her many problems and personality issues. That charm is also what's allowed her to be perceived as innocent and naive to some people, which is exactly why many didn't believe she was capable of the murders she committed. Ginny doesn't have that same magnetic personality and has even come off as downright unlikable at times, which is why she needs to watch herself closely. Overall, I found season three to be intense with great acting and writing, and I can't wait to see where the show heads next season. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox?
