Hassett says market won't influence Trump tariffs: ‘These are the final deals'

National Economic Council (NEC) Director Kevin Hassett said on Sunday that a market reaction to President Trump's tariff policies will not deter him from proceeding with his plans to levy fees on imports. In an interview on NBC News's 'Meet the Press,' Kristen Welker asked the White House economic adviser whether Trump could change the tariff rates again, if the market reacted as it did in April, when the tariff announcement sent stocks tumbling. 'The markets have seen what we're doing and celebrated them, so I don't see how that would happen,' Hassett responded when asked about a future change to the tariff rates. Welker pressed Hassett: 'Okay, but not ruling it out?' 'No, I would rule it out,' Hassett responded. 'Because these are the final deals.' Trump signed an executive order Thursday that modified tariff rates for dozens of countries after he had twice delayed plans to implement 'reciprocal' tariffs on other nations. Tariff rates range from as high as 41 percent on goods from Syria to as low as 10 percent, the baseline established for all imports. The executive order states that all imports will face a 10 percent tariff. The order goes into effect Aug. 7. Some nations have negotiated separate trade agreements to lock in tariff rates. For example, Indonesia and Thailand agreed to a 19 percent tariff, South Korea and Japan negotiated deals that included a 15 percent tariff, and the United Kingdom struck a deal for a 10 percent tariff. Certain other nations that have not negotiated deals will face higher rates. Hassett touted the tariff deals that the president has struck and said those rates are 'more or less locked in' as other countries might continue to press for negotiations, even after the tariffs kick in. 'We have eight deals that cover about 55 percent of world GDP with our biggest trading partners, the EU and Japan, Korea and so on,' Hassett said. 'I expect that those matters are more or less locked in, although there will have to be some dancing around the edges about exactly what we mean when we do this or that. 'For the deals that aren't ready yet, they're going to get the reciprocal rates soon, and then we would expect that there might continue to be negotiations with those countries,' he added.

Trump's endorsement boosts Senate candidate who almost flipped a key swing seat

EXCLUSIVE - Republican Senate candidate and former Rep. Mike Rogers says President Donald Trump's endorsement gives him a "clear shot" as he aims to flip a Democrat-held seat in battleground Michigan in next year's midterm elections. The president's backing of Rogers last week came a day after GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga, who had been seriously mulling a Senate run in Michigan, announced that he would not launch a 2026 Senate campaign after consultations with Trump. Huizenga's announcement and Trump's ensuing endorsement helped clear the field for Rogers, who is making his second straight bid for the Senate. "It's huge," Rogers said of Trump's endorsement. "It shows how far we've come in unifying the Republican Party here in Michigan." And Rogers highlighted in an exclusive Fox News Digital interview that "clearing out any potential opponent in a primary allows us to continue to build on the momentum we have." Rogers pointed to "people jumping on board, wanting to be part of the team" since Trump's endorsement last week. "Having the Trump endorsement, that just kind of seals the deal. And it means we just get to work to win the election against Democrats in November of '26." Rogers is aiming to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, who announced earlier this year that he wouldn't seek re-election. Rogers, a former FBI special agent who later served as chair of the House Intelligence Committee during his tenure in Congress, is making his second straight run for the Senate in Michigan. Rogers won the 2024 GOP Senate nomination in Michigan but narrowly lost to Rep. Elissa Slotkin, the Democrats' nominee, in last November's election in the race to succeed longtime Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who retired. Slotkin, who vastly outspent Rogers, edged him by roughly 19,000 votes, or a third of a percentage point. "We've already seen some opening of checkbooks that maybe weren't willing to do that before," Rogers said of a boost in fundraising since he landed the president's backing last week. "I think it's definitely going to help our fundraising, and it all feeds on itself, so we'll have better fundraising. Better fundraising means more support. More support means broader support. Broader support means we can continue to build out our team and what we have to do across the state," Rogers added. While Rogers appears to have the GOP field to himself, Democrats are facing a crowded and competitive primary. Among the announced candidates are Rep. Haley Stevens, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, former state House Speaker Rep. Joe Tate, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, of Ann Arbor, a former Wayne County health director. "The Democrats are absolutely in a knife fight in the primary. They are a mess and fighting each other. They don't know which way they're going," Rogers argued. Trump narrowly carried Michigan in the 2024 presidential election after losing the state by a razor-thin margin four years earlier. But Republicans haven't won a Senate election in Michigan in over 30 years. You have to go back to former Sen. Spencer Abraham's 1994 victory. But Rogers said his early start this cycle, compared to his 2024 Senate run, as well as Trump's endorsement, could make the difference in 2026. "I wasn't even in the race this early last go round," Rogers said. "So to be in the race this early and get his [Trump's] endorsement just says we are serious about winning." "All good full steam ahead here," Rogers emphasized.

Senate Banking advances first large, bipartisan housing package in a decade

The Senate Banking Committee unanimously advanced landmark housing legislation on Tuesday, marking a rare area of overwhelming bipartisanship in a divided Congress. The Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream to Housing Act of 2025, sponsored by Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and ranking member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), includes proposals that aim to expand and preserve the housing supply, improve housing affordability and access, advance accountability and fiscal responsibility, and improve oversight and program integrity. 'Many people around the country, frustrated with the way we do American politics, wonder, is there any issue that brings this nation together? And I'm here to say hallelujah! We have found one. It is housing,' Scott said before the panel advanced the bill by a 24-0 vote. The legislation directs the Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a new grant and loan program for qualifying homeowners and small landlords to address home repairs and health hazards, develop best practice frameworks for zoning and land-use policies and create a pilot program to incentivize housing development of all kinds in Community Development Block Grant participating jurisdictions, among other actions. Those asks come as the Trump administration is pushing for deep staff and budget cuts at HUD. 'There are new programs here that should operate more directly with the states and local communities so that we're not at the mercy of a stripped down HUD. But I worry about HUD being under resourced to meet its current obligations, much less to take on more,' Warren said in an interview following the markup. Members on both sides of the aisle acknowledged issues with HUD, but said it was important to get something done to improve what many view as a growing housing crisis. The bill received support from a broad range of groups representing the real estate industry, home builders, mortgage bankers, affordable housing organizations and local governments. 'You have to start someplace. And part of it is to upgrade and to modernize a number of the issues that are causing us problems,' said Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) in an interview on Monday. Some members who have been working on parts of the bill for years acknowledged the potential impact of substantial cuts at HUD.
