China's Android phone makers promote new privacy permission platform to protect user data
As Chinese smartphone makers rush to equip AI features, the issue of user data collection has become the focus of debate. The initiative by the five brands aims to strike a balance between privacy protection and user data access.
The brands will jointly explore new mechanisms in data access to ensure 'transparent and controllable' data authorisation, according to a statement from the Intelligent Terminal Alliance (ITGSA), a non-profit organisation formed by the companies.
The initiative is based on the principle of what is 'minimum and necessary', and will handle data access through native API-based system controls and a platform review and control mechanism.

The platform will identify five types of high-frequency data use scenarios, such as contacts, photos and videos. The privacy permissions will be divided into system level and application level. For example, photos can only be accessed after a user selects the file in the application. When photos are displayed as thumbnails in the system, the application will not have access to the files.

Apple contractor Foxconn ramps up hiring at China factories ahead of iPhone 17 launch
Apple's main contract manufacturer, Foxconn Technology Group , has ramped up recruitment efforts ahead of the September launch of the iPhone 17, offering higher pay and bonuses for assembly line workers at its plants in Zhengzhou and Shenzhen. A Tuesday post on WeChat by one of Foxconn's recruiting agencies said workers who stayed at the factory for three months would qualify for a bonus of up to 8,000 yuan (US$1,113), a significant hike from early July when the three-month bonus was up to 4,500 yuan. Workers can earn 28 yuan per hour, up from 23.5 yuan per hour in early July. The hourly rate was raised to 24 yuan in mid-July, 25 yuan later last month, and 27 yuan in early August, according to recruitment agency Zhengzhou Fugonglian Human Resources. In Shenzhen, the tech hub in southern Guangdong province, Foxconn's Integrated Digital Product Business Group – responsible for smartphone manufacturing – is offering 26 yuan per hour for contract workers, according to a recruitment notice posted on WeChat on Wednesday. DJI faces new challenger as China's robot vacuum maker Dreame hires drone experts
Dreame Technology, a Chinese brand known for its robot vacuum cleaners, is actively recruiting drone experts in what is seen as a move to compete with DJI, the dominant player in the market, amid growing competition from innovative hardware start-ups. The company is advertising at least 10 positions – including drone navigation modelling algorithm engineer, drone test pilot, drone operations sales director and business director for the pan-aviation industry – according to job postings on the recruitment platform Boss Zhipin. The roles will be based either in Dreame's headquarters in Suzhou, a city in eastern Jiangsu province, or the Chinese drone hub of Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province, home to a vast drone supply chain network that supports DJI and other companies. Dreame has already recruited talent from DJI and food delivery giant Meituan, according to news portal Sina, which first reported on the expansion. Meituan had been developing drones for its logistics service since 2017 and used them to deliver more than 200,000 orders in 2024, nearly doubling the volume from the previous year, the company said.
