Old photos misleadingly shared as quakes rattle Santorini

Yahoo06-02-2025

The volcanic island of Santorini has been rattled by an unprecedented wave of seismic activity, including seven successive tremors measuring over 4.0 magnitude on February 6, 2025 (archived here). An even stronger 5.2 magnitude tremor was recorded on February 5, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.
The institute said over 6,000 tremors have been recorded in the Aegean Sea near the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and Ios since January 26.
More than 11,000 residents and seasonal workers have left Santorini by sea and air since early February, with operators laying on additional flights and ferries. The unprecedented phenomenon has given rise to safety concerns and fuelled fears of a potential escalation of the situation.
On February 4, Greek media reported that the quakes had caused a landslide on Red Beach, one of the most popular beaches on Santorini. Images published by Greek media showed rockfall on a section of the beach, with reports saying an access path had been blocked as a result.
In this context, Facebook users in Greece began circulating a photo of Red Beach as seen from above, along with the false claim that "The Red Beach of Santorini collapsed into the sea after the 5 magnitude tremors". The picture shows an aerial view of the cliffside beach with rockfall debris seen in the vicinity of sun loungers.
The image and the same claim were shared on Facebook (here, here, here and here), Threads (here) and Greek media websites (here, here and here). Neither the articles nor the posts indicated the photo was an archive picture.
However, AFP found that the photo has appeared online since at least 2013. Although it does indeed show Red Beach in Santorini, it is unrelated to the recent quakes.
A reverse image search on TinEye showed that the photo has been online since at least September 7, 2015.
Since the hyperlink in the first and oldest result on TinEye, named "user/3586314/tags/Vulkan", didn't work, we copied and pasted it into the WayBack Machine. This digital archive platform provided an archived version of the photo dated July 10, 2013. This is the earliest version of the image published online AFP was able to find.
According to these results, the image was originally uploaded to "Panoramio", a photo-sharing platform that was deactivated in 2016.
On Panoramio, the image was uploaded by a user named "th81" with the following caption in German "Santorini, view of the 'Red Beach' from above".
Another reverse image search revealed that the image has since been featured on multiple websites, all identifying it as Red Beach in Santorini (examples here, here and here).
The seismic tremors have also revived fears of volcanic activity on Santorini, whose volcano last erupted in 1950. Another viral photo that circulated among Greek social media users in early February 2025 showed what appears to be lava flowing down a volcano by the sea, along with the claim: "Alarm in Santorini: The volcano is awake - People (are) on the streets" (examples here, here and here).
Although some users in the comments expressed disbelief at the posts, other comments showed that the posts were spreading fear. "The inhabitants of all the islands in the volcanic arc have packed their bags. Unfortunately, the world is scared, and not without reason," one social media user wrote.
The same photo with the claim that the Santorini volcano was showing signs of activity was also published by Greek websites (here, here and here). Neither the articles nor the posts indicated the photo was an archive picture.
However, AFP found the photo in the database of the Associated Press news agency, where it was identified as being taken in 2007 and showing the volcanic island Anak Krakatau in Indonesia.
A reverse image search led us to this article featuring the same picture with the byline "Image credit: AP Photo/Ed Wray" and the following caption: "The Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) volcano sends up powerful clouds of hot gasses, rocks, and lava as a fishing boat is moored offshore early Thursday Nov. 8, 2007, in the Sunda Straits between Java and Sumatra, Indonesia".
A search using the keywords "Anak Krakatau 2007" in the Associated Press photo database retrieved the original photo (archived here). The photo was taken at Anak Krakatau, Indonesia, on November 8, 2007, as shown in the image metadata in the screenshot below.
AFP has debunked another claim in which an old image was misleadingly shared as a current one from Santorini here.

New Portage Travel Club Allows Rural Students to Join School Trips

Students who have not previously been able to join international school trips now have the chance to travel abroad with the newly created Portage Travel Club. Portage Collegiate Institute teachers JoEllen Sevcenko and Laura McMaster have co-founded the new club, aimed at broadening students' horizons which will no longer be organized by the Portage la Prairie School Division. 'They're not approving international trips anymore,' said Sevcenko. 'Anything outside of Canada, we are going to take care of as a club now,' she said. There are still upcoming trips planned through the school division. PCI is offering two final international student trips: Amsterdam, London & Paris in 2026, and Japan in 2027. There's still space available for the Amsterdam trip, while Japan has now moved to a waitlist. Newly minted this month, the club's goal is to keep providing the opportunity for students to travel the globe—which will now include students from outside the division. 'Some of the smaller communities that haven't had a chance to travel will get to join us now,' said Sevcenko. Laura McMaster is a new French Immersion teacher at PCI, coming from Winnipeg about a year ago. She said she met Sevcenko during previous EF Tours trips, which was part of the reason she came to town. The club will still be working with EF Tours. 'We just believe too much in student travel and what it offers kids and I would say especially kids from a smaller town like Portage, to really get a chance to see the world and not to have just one perspective, multiple perspectives and different ways of living,' said McMaster. Trips are already planned and underway. McMaster will be in charge of French-language trips on odd-numbered years, while Sevcenko will be doing English-based travel on even-ended years. In 2027, students will have the chance to visit Paris, the Riveria and Rome, while in 2028, there is a 12-day Greece trip planned that includes a three-day cruise through the islands. The club will be holding their first information session at the Herman Prior Activity Centre on June 16 at 6:00 p.m. for all interested students and parents. They can RSVP here: The Plap Travel Club trips will still be fundraised, with the club doing Grocery Bucks. Sevcenko says the earlier a student registers for a trip, the more chance they have to raise funds or get a job, making it more affordable. 'If you enroll early enough, then the cost becomes much more manageable for most families. So there's been some sort of red tape stuff that slows things down. And that means the less time that people have to pay, the less inclusive travel is,' she said. 'So if you have two years, lots of kids that we work with can just get a job and pay it themselves with no trouble, plus the fundraising.' Trips are available for students in grades 9-12. German politician strips naked, calls on ‘open-minded citizens' to join him on swingers trip in France

A local German politician has copped backlash from fellow councillors after he stripped naked and called on residents to join him on a swingers trip in France. Julien Ferrat, a councillor at Mannheim City, in southwest Germany, and representative of local political party 'Die Mannheime', said the eight-day trip to swinger hotspot, Cap d'Agde, in the south of France, is to investigate how it became a global hub in nudist and sex tourism – and how this can help boost Mannheim's local economy. He gained plenty of attention – and pushback from fellow councillors – when a story of his unconventional idea appeared in the local Mannheim Official Gazette in May. It was accompanied by a naked photo of Ferrat on the beach with just a sign covering his genitals. The headline read – 'Political Education Trip to Cap d'Agde', translating to – Political education trip to Cap d'Agde. Julien Ferrat said the eight-day trip to swinger hotspot, Cap d'Agde, in the south of France, is to investigate how it became a global hub in nudist and sex tourism – and how this can help boost Mannheim's local economy. 'The naturist village in Cap d'Agde is considered a mecca for nudists and swingers,' the 33-year-old said in the article. 'What few people know: Without government support for tourism (…) this place would never have been created.' He has called for 'curious and open-minded citizens' to accompany him on the trip which will involve a training camp, to ensure no participant heads into the resort 'unprepared'. The training camp, according to the Daily Mail, involves outdoor sex on the Friesenheimer Insel in Mannheim. He stressed the training camp will 'exclude the media' to protect the participants' privacy. 'In Cap d'Agde, sex on the beach is taken literally. And anyone who's always wanted to shop naked in the supermarket can easily indulge that desire there,' he said. 'Having sex in your own bedroom is different than on the beach with a group of masturbating men like in Cap d'Agde.' He said a 'great deal can be learned' from the project village, which is now a leading naturist resort on the Mediterranean coast with professional swinger clubs and privately-run nude restaurants, bars, and a beach, the Daily Mail reported. He plans to have discussions with the tourist office and local business owners, including hotel operators. As of May 16, 75 people expressed interest in the unique holiday, with 22 people – including 14 men and eight women – confirming their place. However, not everyone has expressed their support with one councillor calling it 'embarrassing' and 'idiotic'. Ferrat gained plenty of attention when a story of his unconventional idea appeared in the local Mannheim Official Gazette in May. Julien Ferrat/Facebook 'I find this call idiotic because I believe it actually harms politics,' Christian Hötting, CDU district chairman in Mannheim and city councillor, told local publication, SWR Aktuell. 'I don't see anything sensible in it that will move the city, or the people of this city, forward. 'It's just a bit embarrassing.' Ferrat retaliated, saying, 'Nobody is forced to go there. Anyone who is bothered by it should simply put the article down.' According to the publication, the city administration is reluctant to comment on the article. 'The official gazette, as the municipality's official publication, is subject to special partisan neutrality,' a spokesperson for the council said, according to the publication. It added, that members of the municipal council write their articles on their own responsibility. It's not the first time councillor Ferrat has stripped naked. Last year, he published an introduction to himself in the official gazette alongside a photo of himself naked with his hands covering his genitals.

Hiker dies after bear knocks him into 2,600-foot ravine

A veteran Greek hiker died Tuesday after falling into a ravine in the north of the country after a bear encounter, rescuers said. Christos Stavrianidis was declared dead at Kavala hospital shortly after he was found in the 2,600-foot ravine in Fraktou forest in northeastern Greece, the Ekav national emergency center told AFP. Stavrianidis was in the forest with another experienced hiker, Dimitris Kioroglou, when the incident happened on Monday. "I suddenly saw a bear which attacked me," Kioroglou told news portal NewsIT. "My dog delayed it for a few seconds. I used pepper spray, and it headed to where my friend was and knocked him into the ravine." Panos Stefanou, spokesman for Greece wildlife group Arcturos, said the bear was likely defending itself. "This is more a defensive behavior, not an attack. The bear is trying to push back what it sees as a threat," he told state TV ERT. The hikers were heading towards the remains of a Greek warplane that crashed in the area some seven decades earlier. Stavrianidis had found the plane deep in the forest last August. He was leading efforts to identify a more accessible route to its location to enable more people to visit the wreckage. "It's a beautiful discovery that deserves to be viewed on location... the fuselage is nearly intact," he had told a local journalist last year. "It's a treasure of nature and should be left (in the forest)," he had said. Brown bears are protected under Greek law, according to Ursa Trails, which notes the biggest populations are located in the mountains of western Rhodopes and Northern and Central Pindos. The brown bear population is much denser farther north in Europe. Last month, Slovenia approved the culling of more than 200 brown bears, whose population in a forested area outside the capital had grown to around 1,000. Slovakia has also grappled with a surging brown bear population as well as attacks on humans. In April, lawmakers approved a plan to shoot about 350 brown bears in Slovakia after a man was mauled to death while walking in a forest there, the BBC reported. Last year, a woman died in Slovakia after being chased by a bear through dense forest and mountainous terrain.
