Singapore's Danelle Tan leaves Brisbane Roar, wants to keep her options open
SINGAPORE – National women's footballer Danelle Tan is on the hunt for a new club.
On May 28, she announced on Instagram that she will leave Brisbane Roar after making just three appearances for the A-League Women side.
In a statement on social media, the club said the 20-year-old forward is among five players who will leave the club after their contract expires at the end of this season.
Brisbane, who finished seventh out of 12 in the recently concluded A-League Women campaign, thanked the players for their contributions and wished them all the best in the future.
When contacted, Tan told The Straits Times that she is keeping her options open, saying: 'My main consideration is finding an environment where I believe I can improve and grow most as a player, whether in Europe or somewhere else in the world.
'I'm always trying to improve myself as a player, and that means constantly looking for environments where I can grow the most and take my football to the next level.
'While I'm grateful for my time at Brisbane Roar, I don't feel that it's the right place for me for the near future.'
She joined the Australian club in August 2024, after helping German club Borussia Dortmund gain promotion to the Westfalenliga, the fourth tier of German football.
Tan made three substitute appearances for the Roar – for a total of 45 minutes – after a knee surgery sidelined her for eight games.
Her A-League Women debut came on Jan 4 in a 2-1 loss to Canberra United.
She had a goal disallowed for offside in her second game on Feb 16, a 0-0 draw with Western United, before a 10-minute cameo in the 3-2 loss to Sydney FC on March 2.
She then scored in a 7-1 friendly win against a Singapore Women's Premier League All-Star team at Bishan Stadium in April.
When asked about her injury, Tan said: 'I think the knee injury came at a very unfortunate time – right before the start of the season.
'I had a good pre-season leading up to the season, starting in pre-season friendlies, so I really felt the injury killed my momentum.
'Even after coming back from injury, the team was doing very well, so competition was extremely high and I struggled for minutes.'
In 2023, Tan became the first Singaporean woman to feature in a European league when she played for English third-tier side London Bees in the amateur FA Women's National League South.
In the same year, she became the first Asian to play for the Dortmund women's team. She contributed 16 goals in 27 matches as BVB Frauen won the fifth-division Landesliga to earn their third consecutive promotion in three years and clinched the regional Kreispokal Cup in 2024.
She then left Dortmund and accepted the offer from Brisbane, with whom she signed her first pro contract and became the second Singaporean footballer to feature in Australia's top-tier women's competition, following former national midfielder Lim Shiya, who played for Perth Glory in 2008-09.
Thanking Brisbane for the opportunity to play in Australia, Tan said: 'My experience with Brisbane Roar is something I'm really grateful for.
'During my time in Australia, I've met some incredible people and life long friends that I'll carry with me beyond football.
'While I hoped the season would pan out a little differently, I'm still incredibly thankful to the fans for their unwavering support, as well as to the coaches and my teammates throughout the season.'

Interim coach says Montemurro will take Matildas to new heights SYDNEY - Caretaker coach Tom Sermanni, who signed off his third spell in charge of the Matildas with a 4-1 win over Argentina on Monday, is convinced his replacement Joe Montemurro will take the team to new heights. The 70-year-old Scot, who first took charge of the Australia women's national team in 1994 before they had the nickname by which they are now known around the world, guided the side for the 151st time hours after Montemurro's appointment. "His coaching record is second to none, he is a proud Australian, I think he will take this team to a new level," Sermanni told broadcaster Paramount before the match in Canberra. Two goals from Amy Sayer and later strikes from Emily Van Egmond and substitute Michelle Heyman gave Australia a second win over Argentina in the space of four days to send Sermanni off in style. The Matildas were roared on by a sellout crowd of 25,125 at Canberra Stadium, a familiar sight over the last few years as the team has grown hugely in popularity. "The thing that stood out to me is every time we've played a game at home, and I've walked out onto the field and just looked at the crowd, it's just been phenomenal experience," the former coach of the United States women's team told reporters. "I've never witnessed a crowd that such as the Matildas crowd. With the Matildas, it's just unique. And I kind of pinch myself when I go out and stand in front of it before the game starts." Sermanni thought that he was bequeathing Montemurro a squad of players that, when fully fit, would be competitive with any side in the world. Toronto Raptors' odds to land Giannis Antetokounmpo shorten amid reports

PHOTO: AFP MILWAUKEE – Giannis Antetokounmpo is favoured to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks amid increasing speculation that the two-time NBA MVP is open to being traded this off-season. The Bucks are the odds-on favorite at -140 by DraftKings to be the team Antetokounmpo is playing for in his first minute of the 2025-26 regular season. That is well ahead of the San Antonio Spurs (+380) and Houston Rockets (+450). The Rockets crashed out of the play-offs after posting the second-best record in the Western Conference, but have a young and talented roster poised to compete for several years. That roster could use an experienced star in the mold of Antetokounmpo to make a deeper play-off run next season alongside the likes of Amen Thompson, Antetokounmpo, Tari Eason, and Dillon Brooks. The Spurs also make for an intriguing destination to pair with young star Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, who was acquired from Sacramento last season. San Antonio are still armed with a slew of draft picks to help facilitate a deal. The next shortest odds belong to the Toronto Raptors, who have moved to +1000 with a report by the Toronto Star that there is 'mutual interest' should Antetokounmpo be traded. Separately, ESPN reported that the Raptors are 'looking for a big fish' in the off-season trade market. It was originally reported in April that Antetokounmpo would be open to playing elsewhere in 2025-26. According to the Star's report on June 1, the Raptors are deep enough at the wing position to combine with first-round picks to make a run at Antetokounmpo, who has spent his first 12 seasons with Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo, 30, averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists in 2024-25 before Milwaukee were handed their third straight first-round playoff exit. With highly paid All-Star guard Damian Lillard facing a lengthy rehabilitation after tearing his left Achilles tendon in the play-offs on April 27, the Bucks are not well-positioned to contend for a championship next season – which speaks to the off-season decisions that the Bucks and Antetokounmpo face. He is under contract through the 2026-27 season and has a US$62.8 million (S$80.9 million) player option for 2027-28. He carries cap hits of US$54.1 million in 2025-26 and US$58.5 million in 2026-27. Meanwhile in other NBA news, the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers are set to clash in October. There was a lot of criticism circling the Mavericks after they traded franchise star Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February. Expect another round of opinions about the big swap during the pre-season when the Mavericks and Lakers meet at Las Vegas on Oct 15. The Lakers announced four pre-season games on June 2 in which they are designated as the home team, and the attention-getter is the matchup against Dallas. The Mavericks landed Anthony Davis in the controversial deal, but Dallas fans were irate over the loss of Doncic. The Lakers won both meetings between the teams after the trade. Doncic had a triple-double (19 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists) as Los Angeles beat visiting Dallas 107-99 on Feb 25. He then poured in 45 points in his first visit to Dallas as a visiting player on April 9, helping the Lakers prevail 112-97. Davis missed the Feb 25 game before producing 13 points and 11 rebounds on April 9. The Mavericks won the NBA draft lottery despite being big longshots, so they could have Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 overall pick, in action when they get to Las Vegas. The Lakers, of course, will have a roster led by veteran LeBron James. The Lakers also announced pre-season games against the Phoenix Suns on Oct 3 in Palm Desert, California, and home contests against the Golden State Warriors on Oct 12 and the Sacramento Kings on Oct 17.
