Seiya Suzuki hits 2 HRs as Cubs power past Tigers
June 7 - Seiya Suzuki led a five-homer barrage with a pair of solo shots as the visiting Chicago Cubs powered past the Detroit Tigers 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Suzuki smacked his 15th and 16th homers in support of Jameson Taillon (6-3), who posted his fourth consecutive victory and fifth straight quality start. Taillon allowed one run and three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in seven innings. Taillon has allowed just five runs during his winning streak in a span of 26 2/3 innings. Michael Busch hit a two-run homer, while Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw added solo blasts. All but two of Chicago's hits were home runs after the Cubs were held to one run in the series opener. Zach McKinstry had a triple and scored the lone run for Detroit. Keider Montero gave up four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Suzuki's two-out homer to left in the first off Tyler Holton (2-3), who was used as an opener, gave the Cubs an early advantage. Nico Hoerner led off the fifth inning for the Cubs with an infield single and Busch smashed his two-run shot, estimated at 414 feet, over the right-field wall for his 10th homer. Detroit got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. McKinstry pulled a triple down the right-field line and scored on Jake Rogers' fielder's choice grounder. Chicago lengthened its lead in the seventh when Crow-Armstrong lofted an 0-1 curveball from Montero over the right field wall for his 17th homer. Three batters later, Shaw smoked a 2-1 Montero slider over the left field fence to make it 5-1. Suzuki's second homer of the day came off Chase Lee in the eighth inning. Detroit had two baserunners on in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't push another run across. --Field Level Media

Five Padres pitchers blank Brewers, 2-0
June 7 - Manny Machado homered and five pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the visiting San Diego Padres opened a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 2-0 win on Friday. Randy Vasquez, Wandy Peralta (3-0), Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon held the Brewers scoreless through eight innings before Robert Suarez pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 22 opportunities. Martin Maldonado had two hits for San Diego, which has won four of its last six games. Milwaukee lost for just the second time in its last 11 games. The Brewers were shutout for the seventh time this season while going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position with 10 runners left on base. San Diego pushed a run across against Chad Patrick (3-5) in the third inning. Tyler Wade hit a leadoff single, moved to third on Maldonado's single and scored on Luis Arraez's one-out single. Patrick gave up one run on four hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out six. Machado began the eighth inning against Grant Anderson by connecting on an 0-2 sweeper for his ninth home run and second in as many games. The 388-foot shot was Machado's 351st homer of his career. Vasquez worked in and out of trouble over 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Brewers had runners on the corners with one out in the second inning, but Vasquez escaped unscathed when Caleb Durbin grounded into a double play. Vasquez was replaced by Peralta with two runners on and two outs in the fourth inning. Peralta struck out Christian Yelich to escape the jam. Milwaukee put runners on the corners again with two outs in the seventh inning before Morejon fanned William Contreras on three pitches. Aaron Ashby struck out the side in the eighth inning for the Brewers, who began a 10-game homestand. San Diego recorded its 11th shutout and improved to 16-16 on the road. The Padres' last five games have been decided by a total of six runs. Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts returned after missing one game with left shoulder soreness and went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. --Field Level Media

Tigers down Cubs in matchup of Central division leaders
June 7 - Tarik Skubal pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, Spencer Torkelson hit the go-ahead homer and the host Detroit Tigers downed the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Friday to open a three-game interleague eries. In a matchup of AL and NL Central first-place teams, Skubal (6-2) allowed one run, scattered eight hits and struck out six. Will Vest got the last four outs for his 10th save. Jahmai Jones, just called up from Triple-A Toledo, also homered for Detroit. Gleyber Torres added an RBI single. Kyle Tucker had two hits and drove in the lone Chicago run. Ben Brown (3-4) gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out seven on seven innings. Chicago was limited to an infield single through the first four innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong led off the fifth with a single and Dansby Swanson followed with a double. Crow-Armstrong ran several steps past the third base bag, then tried to retreat. He was tagged out and Skubal retired the next two batters on a flyout and a strikeout. The Tigers broke through with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Javier Baez, Parker Meadows and Torres hit consecutive singles with Baez scoring on Torres' liner into center field. Chicago knotted the score in the sixth. Matt Shaw led off with a double and scored on Tucker's one-out double to right. Tucker was left stranded as Skubal set down the next two batters on a flyout and strikeout. Torkelson gave the Tigers the lead again in the bottom of the inning with his 15th homer. He pulled a 3-2 Brown fastball over the left-center field wall. Outstanding defense in the eighth allowed Detroit to hang onto the lead. Justin Turner led off with a single and Shaw bounced into a fielder's choice. A perfect throw from catcher Dillon Dingler cut down Shaw as he tried to steal second. Ian Happ then reached on a single and moved to third on a Tucker single. Vest replaced Skubal and right fielder Kerry Carpenter made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Seiya Suzuki of a two-out extra-base hit. Jones, pinch-hitting for Carpenter in the bottom of the inning, made it 3-1 with his homer to left. --Field Level Media
