Renault, Stellantis bosses urge more favorable EU rules for small cars

PARIS, May 5 (Reuters) - Stellantis ( opens new tab Chairman John Elkann and Renault ( opens new tab CEO Luca de Meo urged the European Union to adopt more favourable rules for small cars, warning that the declining profitability of small cars could force plant closures without changes. In a joint interview in French newspaper Le Figaro, Elkann and de Meo added that France, Italy and Spain should lead the effort as the demand for smaller, more affordable cars is the highest in these countries. They did not give details on the rules they wanted to see apply to small cars. "What we are asking for is a differentiated regulation for smaller cars. There are too many rules designed for bigger and more expensive cars, which means we can't make smaller cars in acceptable profitability conditions," de Meo said. He added that Renault and Stellantis, which have a combined market share of 30% in Europe, are primarily focused on producing affordable cars in Europe, for European consumers. But premium car makers, like Germany's BMW ( opens new tab, Mercedes ( opens new tab and some brands of the Volkswagen ( opens new tab group, are more focused on export, said de Meo. "(For them), Europe does count, but (their) priority is export. For the last 20 years, their logic has dictated market regulations. And the result is that European rules mean that our cars are ever more complex, ever heavier, ever more expensive, and most people simply can't afford them any more," Renault's CEO said. Elkann, stressing that EU car sales were at disastrous levels, said having specific regulations for smaller cars was a "strategic" matter. "At this rate, if the trajectory does not change, we will have to make some painful decisions for our production base over the next three years," he said. Ryan O'Hearn's HR backs Dean Kremer as Orioles blank Royals

May 3 - Baltimore's Dean Kremer threw seven shutout innings and Ryan O'Hearn broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run, seventh-inning home run as the Orioles beat the visiting Kansas City Royals 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista each pitched an inning of relief to complete the combined four-hitter. O'Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits apiece for the Orioles, who have won three of their last four games. Michael Wacha matched Kremer through six innings before the Orioles got on the board. Kremer (3-4), who entered the game with a 7.04 ERA in six starts, limited the Royals to three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Bautista was credited with his sixth save. The Royals were shut out for the fourth time this season. Kansas City's Michael Massey and Freddy Fermin posted two hits apiece, but the Royals lost for just the second time in their last 11 games. Massey's second-inning double was the only extra-base hit for Kansas City. Wacha (1-4) had thrown six scoreless innings Saturday against Houston, so he was in a groove as well. But his line ended up at three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. The teams combined for six hits through five scoreless innings, which were completed in less than an hour. Adley Rutschman led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and O'Hearn, the next batter, homered to center field. It was O'Hearn's sixth home run of the season. Two of the next three batters reached base against Wacha, who was replaced by Steven Cruz. After Heston Kjerstad's single loaded the bases, Emmanuel Rivera, playing in just his second big-league game of the season, provided a run-scoring single before Cedric Mullins lined into an inning-ending double play. Despite the limited offense, each team struck out just four times. Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab Suggested Topics: Baseball

The Dodgers said Glasnow was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. The team recalled right-hander Noah Davis from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move. It was Glasnow's second consecutive start the Dodgers have cut short. He experienced leg cramps in a matchup against the Texas Rangers on April 20. In the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Glasnow allowed a pair of solo home runs and also walked a batter. Glasnow warmed up before the start of the second inning before Roberts came to the mound with a team trainer. The right-hander walked back to the locker room after a short conversation and was replaced by right-hander Ben Casparius. In five starts this season, Glasnow, who signed a five-year, $136.5 million contract in 2024, is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, a 1.278 WHIP and 23 strikeouts. In his first season with the Dodgers, Glasnow made his first All-Star appearance and finished 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA, a 0.948 WHIP and 168 strikeouts. However, he missed Los Angeles' run to the World Series title during the postseason because of an elbow sprain. Over his 10-year career with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles, Glasnow, 31, owns a 40-33 record with a 3.83 ERA. Davis, 28, appeared in three games out of the bullpen for the Dodgers earlier this season and went 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA. He spent the previous three seasons with the Colorado Rockies. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab

Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images/File Photo Purchase Licensing Rights, opens new tab April 23 - Starting catcher Francisco Alvarez and starting infielder Jeff McNeil are expected to be activated from the injured list and join the New York Mets for their weekend road trip beginning Friday, reported. The pair are set to play in their final rehab game for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. McNeil, 33, suffered an oblique injury during spring training while Alvarez, 23, underwent surgery to repair his left hamate bone, an injury that also occurred during spring training. McNeil is the Mets' regular second baseman, though he has taken reps in the outfield during his rehab. Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna have been filling in at second. A two-time All-Star and the 2022 National League batting champion, McNeil struggled last season, hitting .238 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs. Alvarez's return likely will result in rookie Hayden Senger being optioned to Triple-A. Luis Torrens is batting .228 with a homer and eight RBIs starting in place of Alvarez, 23. Last season, Alvarez was limited to 100 games due to injuries, recording 11 home runs and 47 RBIs with a .237/.307/.403 line. The Mets, who entered Wednesday's action tied with the San Diego Padres for the best record in baseball (17-7), kick off a four-game road trip against the Washington Nationals on Friday. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab

Cubs acquire LHP Drew Pomeranz from Mariners

April 22 - The Chicago Cubs acquired left-hander Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations. The Cubs said the 36-year-old reliever, who last pitched in the majors in 2021, will report to Triple-A Iowa. Pomeranz signed a minor league deal with Seattle on March 27. He was 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and two saves in nine appearances at Triple-A Tacoma. Cubs skipper Craig Counsell was managing Milwaukee in 2019 when Pomeranz posted a 2.39 ERA in 25 games for the Brewers. Pomeranz is 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA and nine saves in 289 games (140 starts) with the Colorado Rockies (2011-13), Oakland Athletics (2014-15), San Diego Padres (2016, 2020-21), Boston Red Sox (2016-18), San Francisco Giants (2019) and Brewers (2019). An All-Star in 2016, Pomeranz missed the 2022 and 2023 seasons while recovering from multiple elbow surgeries. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab
