Ryan O'Hearn's HR backs Dean Kremer as Orioles blank Royals
May 3 - Baltimore's Dean Kremer threw seven shutout innings and Ryan O'Hearn broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run, seventh-inning home run as the Orioles beat the visiting Kansas City Royals 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series Friday night.
Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista each pitched an inning of relief to complete the combined four-hitter.
O'Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits apiece for the Orioles, who have won three of their last four games.
Michael Wacha matched Kremer through six innings before the Orioles got on the board.
Kremer (3-4), who entered the game with a 7.04 ERA in six starts, limited the Royals to three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Bautista was credited with his sixth save. The Royals were shut out for the fourth time this season.
Kansas City's Michael Massey and Freddy Fermin posted two hits apiece, but the Royals lost for just the second time in their last 11 games. Massey's second-inning double was the only extra-base hit for Kansas City.
Wacha (1-4) had thrown six scoreless innings Saturday against Houston, so he was in a groove as well. But his line ended up at three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
The teams combined for six hits through five scoreless innings, which were completed in less than an hour.
Adley Rutschman led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and O'Hearn, the next batter, homered to center field. It was O'Hearn's sixth home run of the season.
Two of the next three batters reached base against Wacha, who was replaced by Steven Cruz. After Heston Kjerstad's single loaded the bases, Emmanuel Rivera, playing in just his second big-league game of the season, provided a run-scoring single before Cedric Mullins lined into an inning-ending double play.
Despite the limited offense, each team struck out just four times.

The first baseman, who has reached base in 23 straight games, was on four times with a home run, a walk and two singles. It was the first home run Houser has allowed this season. The Royals threatened in the fourth and sixth innings, but Houser managed to get out of both jams. Maikel Garcia and Pasquantino led off the fourth with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved them up to second and third. Houser then struck out Salvador Perez, induced rookie Jac Caglianone into a comebacker and struck out Drew Waters. In the sixth, Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a single, but Garcia hit into a 1-6-3 double play. Pasquantino then walked, but Perez struck out for the third straight time. Kansas City Chiefs linked with bombshell trade for $57million Cleveland Browns star
After trading away a big-money offensive lineman contract in the form of Joe Thuney, the Kansas City Chiefs have been linked to trade for a different big-money offensive lineman. Thuney, who was earning $16m a year, was moved to the Chicago Bears as Kansas City dealt with something of a cap crunch. But with the Chiefs still in need of some upgrades at offensive line, they could begin looking around the league for a partner. In an article for Pro Football Network, writer Brandon Austin believes the Chiefs could find that help in the form of Cleveland Browns pending free agent Wyatt Teller. Teller, a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro-Bowler, is entering the final year of a $57million deal and carries a $14.175m cap hit. PFN named Kansas City as a potential trade destination, especially considering the various offensive line issues they experienced last season. The outlet points out that if the Browns move Teller after June 1, they could save $7m in cap room while taking on $19.2m in dead cap through 2028. While Teller does play right guard, the publication thinks his versatility could allow him to slot in on the left side of the line where Kansas City needs more help. But in order to facilitate that, the Chiefs would need to make a trade that would balance their books. Currently, Kansas City has the fourth-least cap space in the NFL at $11.25m. Not only is that roughly $3m short of Teller's contract, it would also severely hamper the Chiefs' ability to make a mid-season move. Of course, this all depends on who or what Kansas City sends to Cleveland as part of this deal. The Chiefs' offensive line issues were clearest in their Super Bowl LIX defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles - who sacked Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes six times, despite not calling one single blitz.

Chiefs Super Bowl champion Dustin Colquitt announces NFL retirement
Super Bowl-winning punter Dustin Colquitt signed a ceremonial one-day contract with Kansas City this week to retire from the NFL as a Chief. Colquitt, 43, has not made an appearance since the 2021 season, when he featured five times during a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns. The former Tennessee star played 15 of his 17 seasons with the Chiefs, winning a Super Bowl in the 2019 campaign and earning Pro Bowl selections in 2012 and 2016. He also still holds the franchise record for most games played after racking up 238 appearances for Kansas City. Colquitt averaged 44.8 yards in punting 1,198 times for 53,660 yards in 255 regular-season games, with 103 touchbacks and 483 boots inside the 20-yard line. He had six blocked. The Chiefs selected him with the 99th overall pick in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, before he went on to enjoy a 15-year run as Kansas City's starting punter. I shared with them [the players] the first time I was not employed and played here, I would still make that drive and get on [Route] 150 highway and be like, "Oh yeah I don't work there anymore." Which is a good thing 'cause I got to be in these halls for a long time.' A number of Colquitt's former teammates also took to social media to pay tribute to him, including Travis Kelce.
