Porsche's 1980s Icon May Return as the 911 Flachbau RS

Porsche seems to be prepping a modern incarnation of a totem of 1980s 'greed is good' culture, the 911 Turbo Flachbau. In addition to recently registering the name Flachbau with the EUIPO, Porsche has also registered the name Flachbau RS. This appears to signal a new exclusive edition 911, melding track-bred dynamics with a heavy aero-influenced frontal restyling. Porsche has recently been mining its history with a succession of models, each harking back to a previous decade. The latest is the 911 Edition 70, which recalls the body stripes and psychedelic Pascha seat fabric of the 1970s. We might now have a clue to the next celebration model, recalling the 1980s. Completists of the 911 will immediately recall that the original 911 Flachbau – or 'slantnose' – was an ultra-expensive limited edition from the factory's Sonderwunsch (special wishes) program. In that era, racing 935s from teams including Kremer flattened the 911's nose for aero purposes. The street 911 Turbo Flachbau replaced the tall front fenders with a line that matched the front hood. To fit the headlamps, they used that symbol of 1980s automotive potency, big pop-up units. Ahead of the rear wheels were giant intakes, with horizontal strakes as per a Ferrari Testarossa. Dominating the rear was the iconic Turbo tea-tray wing. Of the 950 or so built, many ran a 3.3-liter engine instead of the 3.0 that was standard with Turbos from 1978. They also mostly got a power boost to 330 horsepower. So what about a high-price revival using the modern 911 as a base? We called a Porsche source, who said he'd never heard of this trademark registration. But he also said it wouldn't be at all surprised if the factory is planning such a car. Porsche has officially said it will build four Heritage Design series. First, in 2019 was a Targa 4S with 1950s' style paint and corduroy upholstery. More significant was the 2022 911 Sport Classic, a celebration of the late-1960s race 911s. It also had classic trim, including wood on the dash, but it had mechanical back-up. It was the most powerful 911 Porsche had made at the time, with 550 hp, hooked to a manual transmission and RWD-only. So we know the Heritage Design program can do more than just trim. Calling a car the Flachbau RS would signify the involvement of the GT department, developer of the GT2 and GT3 series cars. We're licking our lips. But what about the pop-up lamps, critical to the vibe of mullet hairstyles and big shoulder pads? While they're no longer legal in most markets due to pedestrian safety regulations, our Porsche source suggested that modern ultra-slim LED technology could offer a clever workaround.

Twins, O's kick off 3-game series with a doubleheader after Tuesday PPD

The Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles should be well-rested going into a busy day. The teams will play a traditional doubleheader Wednesday, starting in the early afternoon, to begin a three-game series. This comes following Tuesday night's postponement. For a doubleheader, both teams can add an additional player to the roster. Yet there might not be an urgent need for one because neither bullpen should be taxed after back-to-back days off. The teams generally have been trending in different directions. The Twins own an eight-game winning streak, including a three-game sweep of Baltimore last week at home. The Orioles have lost six of their last eight games. For Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, the team's upswing has generated much-needed confidence. "I think that's coming out with a lot of our guys and it's really coming out," Baldelli said. The Orioles could use a jolt of confidence offensively. They've reached the five-run mark only twice in their last 19 games and they lost one of those two games. Baltimore left-hander Cade Povich figures to get the call on the mound in one of the games as he was the scheduled starter Tuesday night. He was the losing pitcher at Minnesota last Tuesday in his previous start. But the Orioles initially listed right-hander Dean Kremer as the Game 1 starter in the twinbill. His best two outings of the season have come this month, as he has logged 14 innings and given up two runs. Both of those runs were scored by the Twins last Thursday in Kremer's seven innings of work. He allowed three hits one a solo home run by Trevor Larnach and two walks while striking out a season-high eight batters in Minnesota's eventual 5-2 victory. "Guys are taking the losses hard and we're just trying to take it one day at a time and keep it as positive as possible," Kremer said. Kremer said there's no sense in putting more pressure on himself even if the Orioles are sluggish with the bats. "I learned a few years ago, no matter what the offense is doing, it doesn't matter and it shouldn't affect how I am pitching and how aggressive I am," Kremer said. Minnesota has right-hander Bailey Ober lined up to throw in the first game. He lasted 4 2/3 innings last Thursday against Baltimore without getting a decision but had won four consecutive starts before that. Right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson also is expected to get a start for the Twins as he looks to maintain a consistent stretch in what will be his third road stint in his last four assignments. The Orioles, who are 8-9 at home this season, are trying to move above .500 at Camden Yards. Field Level Media

Kremer, O'Hearn lift Orioles over Royals 3-0; Witt's 22-game hitting streak ends

BALTIMORE -- Dean Kremer allowed three hits in seven innings, Ryan O'Hearn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Friday night for a rare low-scoring victory in their first shutout this season. Last-place Baltimore improved to 2-16 when scoring three or fewer runs and won back-to-back games for only the second time this year. Kremer (3-4) and Michael Wacha (1-4) battled for six scoreless innings before Adley Rutschman led off the Baltimore seventh with a double. O'Hearn followed with a drive to left-center field for his sixth home run of the year. Emmanuel Rivera, playing because infielder Ramón Urías was scratched with right hamstring tightness, added an RBI single later in the inning. Kansas City lost for just the second time in 11 games. Bobby Witt Jr. went 0 for 4, ending his 22-game hitting streak, as the Royals were blanked for the fourth time. Yennier Cano pitched the eighth, and Félix Bautista finished the four-hitter for his sixth save in six chances. Wacha allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Kansas City turned inning-ending double plays in the first and second, and Kremer got some help in the seventh when shortstop Gunnar Henderson made a nice sliding play on a grounder behind second base. Royals catcher Salvador Perez did not play because of hip issues. Manager Matt Quatraro said he's day to day. Kansas City had a man on second with one out in the second when Mark Canha's comebacker bounced off Kremer to the right side of the infield. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle fielded the ball and flipped it to Kremer, who had hustled over to cover. After the rare 1-3-1 putout, Kremer retired Drew Waters on a grounder to end the threat. O'Hearn had 131 RBIs in five seasons with Kansas City before being traded to the Orioles for cash before the 2023 season. In two-plus seasons in Baltimore, he's already driven in 132 runs. ___

Ryan O'Hearn's HR backs Dean Kremer as Orioles blank Royals

May 3 - Baltimore's Dean Kremer threw seven shutout innings and Ryan O'Hearn broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run, seventh-inning home run as the Orioles beat the visiting Kansas City Royals 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista each pitched an inning of relief to complete the combined four-hitter. O'Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits apiece for the Orioles, who have won three of their last four games. Michael Wacha matched Kremer through six innings before the Orioles got on the board. Kremer (3-4), who entered the game with a 7.04 ERA in six starts, limited the Royals to three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Bautista was credited with his sixth save. The Royals were shut out for the fourth time this season. Kansas City's Michael Massey and Freddy Fermin posted two hits apiece, but the Royals lost for just the second time in their last 11 games. Massey's second-inning double was the only extra-base hit for Kansas City. Wacha (1-4) had thrown six scoreless innings Saturday against Houston, so he was in a groove as well. But his line ended up at three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. The teams combined for six hits through five scoreless innings, which were completed in less than an hour. Adley Rutschman led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and O'Hearn, the next batter, homered to center field. It was O'Hearn's sixth home run of the season. Two of the next three batters reached base against Wacha, who was replaced by Steven Cruz. After Heston Kjerstad's single loaded the bases, Emmanuel Rivera, playing in just his second big-league game of the season, provided a run-scoring single before Cedric Mullins lined into an inning-ending double play. Despite the limited offense, each team struck out just four times. Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab Suggested Topics: Baseball
