Kolkata: Bengal CM
Mamata Banerjee
on Monday expressed her anger at a recent Hindi film's portrayal of freedom fighter Khudiram Bose as 'Khudiram Singh'. Paying tribute to Khudiram on his death anniversary, the CM slammed the attempt by "language terrorists" to "distort the legacy of the pioneering immortal revolutionary".
Khudiram, then mere 18 years old, was executed by the British govt in 1908 and is one of the most revered Bengali revolutionaries.
Following the release of the film in April, TMC had objected to it and held numerous protests against it. The film had also shown Khudiram as a Punjab native.
In a long post on X written in Bengali, Banerjee quoted lines from the popular song 'Ekbaar bidaay de maa, ghure ashi' — written in honour of Khudiram — and said, "Why are those who sacrificed their lives for independence being disrespected? Will language terrorists also distort the legacy of the pioneering immortal revolutionary Khudiram?" The CM added: "Our indomitable youth from Midnapore has been portrayed as a boy from Punjab.
Intolerable!" She reminded how her govt had "always honoured this symbol of patriotism and supreme sacrifice."

The CM on Monday announced the formation of a development authority for Mahabani — an area associated with Khudiram. She added that a statue of Khudiram had been erected in Mahabani. "Renovating a library, constructing a new large auditorium, and conference room — all have been accomplished. An open stage has also been built. Modern cottages have been built for visitors, and the heritage Khudiram Park has been revitalised.
The entire area has been adorned with lights," wrote the CM.
Banerjee also said that she had named a metro station in Kolkata after the revolutionary. "We are so proud of him," she wrote.

West Bengal migrant worker repatriated from Bangladesh after family moves Calcutta HC

Amir Sheikh, a 19-year-old migrant worker from Kaliachak in West Bengal's Malda district who was allegedly detained from Rajasthan in May and 'pushed back' into Bangladesh, was reunited with his family on Wednesday. Mr. Amir's family members said the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel handed him over to the Basirhat police in the State's North 24 Parganas district. Earlier this month, Ziyem Sheikh, the father of Mr. Amir, had filed a habeas corpus petition before the Calcutta High Court. The matter was heard before the Division Bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra. The counsel appearing for the BSF said Mr. Amir attempted to cross over to Indian territory on Tuesday and since he could not produce appropriate identification documents, he was apprehended and handed over to the officer in charge of the Basirhat police station. Speaking to The Hindu, his family contested the BSF's claims. 'I got a call this morning asking me to pick up my son from Basirhat. All this is happening because we approached the court,' Mr. Ziyem said. Refuting BSF's claims Trinamool Congress MP and chairperson of the West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam also refuted the BSF's claims of the migrant worker 'inadvertently crossing the border'. He said an attempt was being made to 'cover up the pushing back of the migrant worker into Bangladesh by the BSF and the Union government by repatriating him'. 'Amir Sheikh from Kaliachak in Malda was deported to Bangladesh by the Rajasthan police with the help of the BSF. From the very beginning, we stood by his family. We helped Amir's father file a habeas corpus petition in the Calcutta High Court. Under pressure, the BSF has brought Amir back to West Bengal,' the MP said, adding that they even have the video Mr. Amir had recorded from Bangladesh. 'He was deported' 'We will legally prove that Amir was deported by the BSF and that he did not go there voluntarily,' Mr. Islam said. He also pointed out that the migrant worker was in the custody of Bangladeshi authorities and had the family not approached the court, he would have continued to languish in detention in the neighbouring country. The matter will come up for hearing on August 27. Hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrant workers have faced alleged detention and harassment in different States and asked to produce documents to prove they are not Bangladeshi nationals. Some migrant workers from West Bengal have claimed that they were 'pushed into' the neighbouring country but later repatriated with the help of Indian authorities.

PMK internal feud: Notice served over hacking allegations

Chennai: The internal feud within PMK escalated as party leader Anbumani Ramadoss ' aide P Sasikumar issued a legal notice to P Swaminaathun, principal secretary of founder S Ramadoss. Sasikumar demanded an unconditional apology and 25lakh in compensation within a week, following allegations against him of unlawful surveillance and hacking activities in Ramadoss' house. Sasikumar said the allegations caused him severe "mental anguish and indescribable emotional trauma", and that the unverified statements across various media platforms inflicted grave and irreversible damage to him professionally as well. He threatened criminal proceedings if his demands are not met within a week. On Tuesday, Ramadoss moved Election Commission, alleging that "R Anbumani" had ulterior motives to ruin PMK for personal gains, which was unacceptable. In a complaint, Swaminaathun said Anbumani was "mischievous" and conducted unauthorized party meetings despite his tenure as president having expired. Sasikumar's legal notice, dated Aug 9, was delivered to Swaminaathun through advocate K Balu, who was previously removed from his position as party legal wing president for supporting Anbumani. This action follows a police complaint filed by Swaminaathun last week, alleging that Sasikumar hacked Ramadoss's phone using a Wi-Fi modem, reportedly confirmed by a private agency. "Among your many reckless assertions is the claim that my client was involved in unlawful surveillance and hacking activities allegations that are entirely fictitious, defamatory, and devoid of any evidentiary foundation," read the notice issued by Sasikumar. Swaminaathun had previously served as an assistant to Anbumani for several years. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). No illegal loudspeaker in any place of worship in Sambhajinagar city

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: In what the police describe as a first-of-its-kind achievement for the city, authorities successfully removed all illegal loudspeakers from places of worship within the jurisdiction of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police commissioner Pravin Pawar told TOI on Wednesday that a total of 6,591 loudspeakers installed at various religious sites were removed following a sustained awareness and persuasion drive. "Today, there is no illegal loudspeaker at any religious place in the city," Pawar said, adding that the police worked with religious heads, social workers, and politicians before approaching individual places of worship. "This was not about confrontation; it was about convincing everyone to abide by the law," said Pawar. The exercise comes against the backdrop of statewide directives to enforce the Supreme Court and high court rulings on permissible sound levels, along with the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules. Starting in July, the police issued notices and held meetings at the levels of police stations, division, and zone levels, with some even escalating to the level of the police commissioner. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ratnakar Navale said the Sambhajinagar police drive focused on educating stakeholders about the legal provisions. "We highlighted the directives of the Supreme Court, the Bombay HC, the Noise Pollution Rules, and orders from the director general of police's office. The best part is that people readily cooperated and removed all the loudspeakers themselves," Navale said. The special branch, led by inspector Avinash Aghav, said the presence of community leaders during these visits helped prevent misunderstandings and ensured uniform application of the law across all faiths. According to senior officers, no force or confiscation was necessary during the operation. "We achieved 100% compliance purely through dialogue and mutual respect," a senior officer said. The move has been welcomed by environmental activists, who point out that it will reduce ambient noise levels in densely populated areas. City police officers said they will continue monitoring to ensure no unauthorised loudspeakers are reinstalled.
