Israeli strikes on Iran spark outcry among anti-normalization voices in Morocco

Overnight from Thursday to Friday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on targets in Iran. In Morocco, critics of the normalization of ties with Israel, officially reestablished on December 10, 2020, have strongly condemned the attack.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) denounced the strikes as a «Zionist terrorist aggression against the Iranian people» and a «violation of Iran's territory and sovereignty». In a statement released Friday, June 13, the party said that «the targeting of infrastructure and the assassination of Iranian leaders» constituted a «blatant breach of international laws and conventions, met with shameful international silence and the full complicity of the United States».
The PJD added that Israel acts as «a rogue state» that respects neither sovereignty nor international law, and disregards UN charters and institutions. Notably, on November 23, 2024, party leader Abdelilah Benkirane praised «the axis of resistance», including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Iran—as the only bloc actively supporting the Palestinian cause.
Trump-Era Legacy Blamed
The Islamist group Al Adl wal Ihsane also raised concerns. In a statement signed Friday by its Political Circle, the group said: «The Zionist entity's aggressive attack on Iran (...) represents a serious escalation and a clear violation of international law and national sovereignty». It warned of the repercussions for regional and global security.
The National Action Group for Palestine echoed the criticism, calling the strikes «an act of aggression against Iran and its people». It held the United States and NATO «directly responsible, as the main sponsor and instigator of the Zionist entity».
The Moroccan Front for Support of Palestine and Against Normalization went further, describing the attack as «a treacherous Zionist aggression carried out with direct American support». The group said it was part of a broader effort to suppress sovereign nations that seek progress and technology, even for peaceful purposes.
Morocco cut diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018, under a PJD-led government, accusing Tehran—via Hezbollah—of arming the Polisario.

Iran Warns It Will Continue Military Operations if Israeli Hostilities Persist

Rabat – Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also known as IRGC, said that the country's military operation will escalate if Israeli hostilities continue. The Iranian Guard Corps issued a statement today, noting that they had targeted military fuel infrastructure in Israel. This comes as a response to Israeli strikes on Iran on June 13. Tel Aviv's attacks, including strikes against residential buildings in and near Tehran, killed military officials. In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel. In a new update, Tehran announced the arrest of two Mossad operatives in Savojbolagh county, operating in a safe house. Iran accused the agents of producing bombs, explosive materials, booby traps, and electronic equipment. President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian has called for unity and coordination among Islamic countries as key to thwarting Israel's hostile plots. He made his remarks during a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday, noting that Israel has shown 'it does not value human rights or international law.' The Times of Israel reported the killing of at least six people, noting that another 100 were injured after an Iranian missile struck a building in the central city of Bat Yam on Saturday. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the Israeli Occupation Forces developed 'exceptional capabilities' in response to Iran's military operations. 'We have dealt with Iran's proxies over the past year and a half, but now we are dealing with the head of the snake itself,' Katz continues . He said Iran is 'more determined than ever to realize its vision of destroying Israel.' World leaders have reacted to the escalation, with division in opinion. While some support Iran, others back Israel's attacks. China backed Iran, noting that it supports the country in safeguarding its national sovereignty and defending its legitimate rights and interests. Qatar also condemned Israel's attack, noting that it was a blatant violation of Iran's sovereignty and security and a clear breach of the rules and principles of international law. Saudi Arabia also condemned the ongoing attacks that undermine Iran's sovereignty. The UK said it is alarmed by the strikes 'with reports of fatalities and injuries in Israel,' calling for de-escalation. As for Germany, it has warned against further escalation, focusing on Iran's nuclear program. It said that this program 'threatens not only Israel, but also Saudi Arabia and the broader stability of the region.

UN Conference on Palestine Postponed Amid Israel-Iran Attacks

The United Nations conference on a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, was postponed following Israel's unprovoked strikes on Iran on July 13. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the postponement the same day, citing logistical and security concerns that prevented key regional figures—including the Palestinian Authority and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman—from attending. 'This delay does not undermine our determination to advance the two-state solution under any circumstances,' Macron insisted. Originally planned for June 17–20 in New York, the conference was framed as a point of no return for the two-state framework, with reports that France was lobbying the United Kingdom and other European nations to recognize Palestinian statehood at the event. However, bowing to US and Israeli pressure, France later announced it would not immediately recognize Palestine at the conference. Instead, it intended to use the gathering to outline preconditions, including a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli captives, reforms within the Palestinian Authority, Gaza reconstruction, and the removal of Hamas from power. After privately warning the UK and France against unilateral Palestinian recognition, the United States has actively urged foreign governments to boycott the summit altogether. According to a recently leaked US diplomatic cable obtained by Reuters, Washington explicitly warned countries that attending the conference would be seen as 'anti-Israel' and contrary to US foreign policy interests. In response to the UK-France talks on recognition, Israel announced in May plans to build 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Defense Minister Israel Katz explicitly declared the expansion 'a strategic move that prevents the establishment of a Palestinian state.' While Israel continues its campaign of forced displacement and genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, the US blocks every avenue for Palestinian survival: vetoing ceasefires, pushing anti-Palestinian policies, whitewashing genocide in the media, and flooding Israel with military aid. Meanwhile, global leaders remain silent, refusing even minimal pressure to defend Palestinian rights—effectively enabling Israel's settler-colonial project through inaction.
