Former world snooker champion Graeme Dott faces trial for child sex abuse
The former world snooker champion Graeme Dott is to stand trial next year over allegations of child sex abuse. The 48-year-old is accused of two charges relating to primary school age children. The allegations span between 1993 and 1996 involving a girl, and 2006 to 2010 involving a boy, both in the Glasgow region. A virtual hearing at the high court in Glasgow on Thursday was told Dott, who was not present, denies the charges. Defending, Euan Dow said: 'He pleads not guilty to two charges on the indictment. The position of the accused is that the allegations are fabricated and there is no truth in any of them.' A trial date was set for 17 August next year at the same court and bail was continued. Dott won the 2006 World Snooker Championship and was runner-up in 2004 and 2010.

Austin Ironside: Tributes to 'always smiling' 25-year-old - as suspect appears in court charged with murder and robbery
A suspect has appeared in court charged with murder and robbery following the death of a young man in Aberdeen. Austin Ironside, 25, was found injured in the city's Skene Street at about 3.10pm on Sunday 3 August. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he died two days later. Police Scotland arrested and charged Scott Adams, 46, in connection with the "suspicious" death. Adams appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Thursday where he made no plea to the charge of murder and robbery. The suspect, from Aberdeen, was remanded in custody and is due back in the dock within the next eight days. Following Mr Ironside's death, his family said: "Austin was popular, with friends across the city, and would do anything to help others. "He was always smiling and his infectious laugh brought light into the lives of everyone who knew him. "We are all devastated by what has happened and would like privacy at this terrible time." The probe continues and is being led by detectives from Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team. A force spokesperson said enquiries remain ongoing and officers are "following a positive line of enquiry".

Fireworks to be banned near Edinburgh Zoo after death of baby panda
Nine areas in Edinburgh are set to have fireworks bans brought in for Bonfire Night. Two year fireworks control zones (FCZs) – areas where the use of any fireworks is banned – are proposed for Niddrie, Seafield, Balerno and Calton Hill. All four were subject to bans last year, with previous reports to councillors suggesting that they were effective in reducing disturbance and litter. Five more FCZs, each lasting one year, are proposed for Corstorphine, Moredun, Gracemount, Longstone and Sighthill, each coming after locals requested them. The Corstorphine ban is aimed at reducing the impact on animals at Edinburgh Zoo, after a red panda cub died on 2024's Bonfire Night. The Longstone ban is also targeted at reducing harms to animals and 'vulnerable communities', while the other three zones are meant to reduce general fireworks misuse. A report set to go before councillors at next week's Culture and Communities Committee says all five zones had 'overwhelming support' during public consultations on introducing them. The application form for new FCZs was launched on March 3 this year, allowing community groups and local residents to apply for a zone to be introduced in their area. Residents in Greenbank had requested a FCZ, but officers said that there was not enough evidence from other public bodies to proceed with it. All nine zones will run from October 31 to November 9 this year. The report says officers are expecting Police Scotland to introduce dispersal zones in some or all of the FCZ areas. Dispersal zones allow police officers to tell groups of two or more people engaging in anti-social behaviour to leave a designated area for up to 24 hours. If they re-enter the zone before they are allowed to, they can be subject to arrest. The report also said that police officers would be placed on some Lothian Buses services on Bonfire Night to discourage antisocial behaviour. And, it said the fire service would deliver presentations in city secondary schools on bonfire and firework safety.
