Whole country is saddened by this incident: Chhattisgarh Deputy CM Arun Sao
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 13 (ANI): Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao paid tribute to those who were killed in the AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad a day earlier and said that the State government and the Centre are providing the necessary help.
Speaking to ANI, Dy CM Sao said, 'The whole country is saddened by this incident. It is a very painful accident. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani has died in this incident. I pay my tribute to all the deceased and express condolences to their families. The state government and the central government are providing all possible help.'
Sharing an X post on Thursday, Sao paid a tribute to ex-Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, who lost his life in the plane crash. Sharing Rupani's picture, Arun Sao wrote, 'Tearful tribute. Om Shanti.'
Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Dy CM Vijay Sharma on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident.
'May God give strength to the families of the deceased... I am deeply saddened that Vijay Rupani is no more. This is a matter of learning why all this happened,' Sharma told ANI.
The AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash.
The Air India flight to London crashed soon after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport, into a medical college complex in Meghaninagar nearby.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours.
According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls made by ATC.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is a division of the Ministry of Civil Aviation tasked with probing aircraft accidents in India.
A formal investigation has been launched by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into the deadly crash of Air India flight 171 that killed 241 people onboard, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed on Thursday. (ANI)

The Gujarat government on Saturday ordered to issue on-the-spot death certificates for the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash tragedy even as 230 teams, including a senior officer, a policeman and a professional grief counselor have been set up to establish contacts with the families of the victims, said officials familiar with the matter. On Thursday, Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight, carrying 242 people to London Gatwick Airport, went down moments after it took off from Ahmedabad airport at 1.38 pm, killing 241. Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey and Additional Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Rajnish Patel while addressing a joint press conference on Saturday shared that out of total 33 districts, victims belong to 18 districts in Gujarat. Arrangements have been made to issue on-the-spot death certificates by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), said one of the officials. Further, sharing more details, Pandey said: 'At least 230 teams, including a senior officer, a policeman and a professional grief counselor have been formed to establish contacts with the families of the victims of the plane crash'. Teams have been assigned to individual families with a rank of a Deputy Collector or tehsildar rank officer. Bodies will be handed over to the families and taken in ambulances to the village or district with a police pilot, Pandey said. 'A grief counsellor has been assigned to every family to deal with mental trauma,' Pandey said. 'Also, instructions have been issued at the village level to issue the family relation card to the families to avoid succession issues,' Pandey said. 'A team from the birth and death certificate department has been stationed at the Civil hospital to issue the death certificates to the families on the basis of the DNA report for a seamless and immediate process,' Ahmedabad Municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani told this paper. The village Talati (revenue officer) has been directed to issue the Inheritance Succession Certificate to the family members to avoid any inconvenience, said a government official. By Saturday evening, DNA samples of a total of eleven deceased were successfully matched, Additional Superintendent Rajnish Patel said. The families of the 11 foreign nationals have been contacted through their respective embassies, Pandey added. 'Contacts have been established with the families of the eleven foreign nationals who will reach here Sunday afternoon,' the relief commissioner added. 'Our team will accompany the family members and provide them with all kinds of assistance,' the official added.

Manipur unites in grief, across the ethnic divide
GUWAHATI: Divided by ethnic strife for more than two years, Manipur has united in grief in the wake of the June 12 crash of Flight AI-171. Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, yearning for peace, have mourned the deaths of both 20-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, who is part of the Meitei community, and 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson, a member of the tribal Thadou community, in equal measure. The pair were among the 10 cabin crew members of Air India's London-bound flight, which crashed seconds after take-off from Ahmedabad. 'Huge loss for all' 'Both were full of life, serving with dedication and pride. Their sudden passing is a huge loss for their families, friends, and for all of us back home. May their souls rest in peace and may their loved ones find the strength to get through this unimaginable pain,' former Manipur Chief Minister, Nongthombam Biren Singh, posted on X. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, which has been seeking a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people since the ethnic conflict with the non-tribal Meiteis broke out in May 2023, said it was pained by the crash that killed 241 people on board, including the two crew members from Manipur. ICG transfers tow of MV Wan Hai 503 to ocean-going tug Offshore Warrior; Averts drift towards Kerala Coast
Kochi ( Kerala) [India], June 14 (ANI): In a significant development in the salvage operations of MV Wan Hai 503, the vessel's tow was successfully transferred from Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships to the ocean-going tug Offshore Warrior on 13 June 2025. This shift was essential to progress the operation, as ICG vessels have limited bollard pull - a term denoting the towing capacity of a ship, said ICG. For the past few days, ICG ships had been maintaining the vessel's position away from the coast. However, sudden deterioration in weather conditions, accompanied by strong westerly winds, caused the vessel to drift rapidly towards the shoreline. The adverse weather restricted aerial operations and delayed the embarkation of the salvage team members onto the vessel, said ICG. Despite these challenges, around 1700 hours on 13 June, a Navy Sea King helicopter successfully launched from Kochi with the salvage team and winched them onboard the distressed vessel under extremely difficult conditions. Subsequently, a 600-metre tow rope was connected to the ocean-going tug approximately 20 nautical miles off Kochi. This crucial joint operation involving the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force enabled the salvors to take over the vessel from the ICG and continue the firefighting and salvage work. The vessel is currently being towed westward at a speed of approximately 1.8 knots and is now nearly 35 nautical miles off the coast. Three Indian Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessels are escorting the vessel while also continuing essential firefighting efforts. At the time of this report, only thick smoke and a few remaining hotspots are visible onboard Wan Hai 503 - a testament to the effective and sustained firefighting operations carried out by the ICG, which helped prevent a potential environmental disaster. The ICG is closely coordinating with the Directorate General of Shipping to ensure the vessel remains at least 50 nautical miles from the Indian coastline until a suitable fate is decided by the owners of the vessel, in line with internationally accepted practices. According to the ICG, this marks a major stride in mitigating a hazardous situation and safeguarding the coastal environment. The situation is expected to further stabilise with the anticipated arrival of additional firefighting tugs to support the ongoing operation. 'The Indian Coast Guard remains ever-prepared to respond to such contingencies and continues to work in close synergy with sister services, state authorities, regulatory agencies, and private salvors to ensure the safety of life, property, and the marine ecosystem,' said ICG.
