Minecraft director confirms sequel is already being talked about after record-breaking opening

Yahoo09-04-2025
A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess has confirmed that work on a sequel is already underway following its record-breaking success.
The fantasy adventure film, based on Mojang Studios' 2011 video game, has proved to be a huge financial success thus far, with the film already the fourth highest-grossing of the year despite only being released on Friday (April 4).
Furthermore, A Minecraft Movie also boasts the biggest three-day opening for a video game adaptation in the US, with the enormous commercial success leading producers to already begin work on a sequel.

In an interview with Deadline, Hess expressed his excitement for the potential follow-up film, teasing that there were several elements from the game that could be incorporated into the sequel.
'Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun,' the filmmaker said. 'We had so much fun making this movie, and it's such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn't tap into that we wanted to.
Related:
'I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there's already talk about it happening, so I'm super excited. It'll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.'
Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, confirmed that Alex – who was voiced by Kate McKinnon in the post-credits scene – would be a figure who they 'bring to the table' for the sequel, describing them as a 'critical character' from the franchise.
A Minecraft Movie follows a group of misfits – played by Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Hansen – as they are pulled through a portal into a strange cubic world, embarking on a quest back to the real world with the help of expert crafter Steve (Jack Black).

Was Sydney Sweeney's Latest Film a Flop? What We Know

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Sydney Sweeney's new film, Americana, has been branded a box-office flop, but it'll likely still be a profitable movie. Newsweek reached out to Sweeney's representative via email for comment on Tuesday. Why It Matters Sweeney, 27, has been making headlines recently for her American Eagle ad campaign, which sparked a debate about eugenics and racism on social media. In the July commercial with the tagline: "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," the Euphoria star says: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue." The wordplay between "jeans" and "genes" prompted some TikTok users to accuse the clothing brand of "Nazi propaganda," while others argued it was just smart marketing. Earlier this month, Newsweek and other outlets confirmed that Sweeney is a registered Republican in the state of Florida. President Donald Trump praised her American Eagle ad. Sydney Sweeney arrives at the Los Angeles special screening of "Americana" on August 3, 2025. Sydney Sweeney arrives at the Los Angeles special screening of "Americana" on August 3, 2025. Photo by Steve Granitz/FilmMagic What To Know Americana was released on Friday and opened at $500,000 from 1,100 theaters. While that figure may initially sound like it's off to a rocky start, the movie wasn't designed as a major theatrical release with a big marketing budget, according to Deadline. The crime thriller, which also features Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser and Eric Dane, follows the story of North Dakota outsiders who clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact, which lands on the black market. It first debuted at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2023 and scored 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, an aggregator of movie and TV show reviews. Despite critical acclaim, by summer 2023, the movie's investor, Bron Studios, went bankrupt, and Americana was placed under Lionsgate Premiere Releasing, a branch of Lionsgate designated for films with a low P&A (prints and advertising) spend, Deadline reported. The outlet said of Americana: "The expectation is for a final domestic take of $1.5M. Americana is on a 30-day exclusive theatrical window instead of 17 days. The PVOD (premium video on demand) release [schedule] is very similar to theatrical with distributors strategically finding the right time to go digital." "Americana will stream through Lionsgate's deal with Starz in its Pay One window," Deadline explained, adding that the film is expected "to be in the black at the end of all of its windows." What People Are Saying Sydney Sweeney promoted Americana on social media last week ahead of the film's release: "a few years ago I filmed this little movie with some friends and now you get to meet penny jo." Halsey wrote on Instagram: "can't wait for everyone to see Americana :) we shot this 3.5 years ago and it finally belongs to the world. It was an absolute honor to be a part of @tonytostvision and a pleasure working under his direction and guidance. This film represents such a memorable time in my life. I signed on before I got pregnant. Filmed it with a 6 month old baby (still nursing!)" "My sweet Jagger passed away unexpectedly towards the end of shooting," she continued, referring to her dog. "A whirlwind to say the least. I made so many friends and learned so many things. It was a world of firsts for me and I am so proud. Go see it in theaters; laugh cry and holler!!!!!" What Happens Next At the time of publication, Sweeney had not yet responded to Americana's box office numbers.
