Need to modernise investigation methods: HC to DGP
The bench of Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar observed that the police must take immediate steps to ensure the use of e-Sakshya or any other suitable digital platform for documenting all searches and seizures, all crime scenes related to offences punishable with imprisonment exceeding seven years and all confessional or witness statements permissible to be video recorded. HC emphasised that the necessary equipment and training must be provided to police officers without delay.
These directions were issued while allowing a criminal appeal filed by Suresh of Vallikode in Pathanamthitta, who had challenged his conviction and life sentence by the trial court in a murder case. The prosecution alleged that on Jan 1, 2015, Suresh had pushed his neighbour and relative, Purushothaman (60), into a drain from a height of six feet. Purushothaman succumbed to injuries at the Govt Medical College, Kottayam, on Jan 16.

The trial court had convicted Suresh based on the testimony of the deceased's wife, who claimed to be an eyewitness. However, HC found serious lapses in the probe, particularly the police failure to record Purushothaman's statement while he was undergoing treatment, as well as the statement of the doctor who treated him. The court also noted that the initial report stated that Purushothaman had suffered injuries from a fall.
Also, the trial court had relied solely on the wife's testimony which appeared highly embellished.
HC observed that a careless or lackadaisical approach by investigators not only wastes public resources but also deprives courts of the full truth, undermines public trust and ultimately allows offenders to go scot-free. Effective investigators must integrate traditional techniques with modern scientific tools to ensure that all traces of evidence are properly collected and presented before the court.
Senior officers should ensure proper training of subordinates and hold them accountable for lapses. Forensic laboratories must also be adequately staffed and equipped to process evidence swiftly and reliably. The court further noted that the BNSS provisions expressly mandate audio-video documentation of critical investigative steps and early collection of forensic evidence, in order to ensure accountability and improve the quality of investigations.
Accordingly, the court directed the HC registry to forward a copy of the judgment to the state police chief and home department and to ensure that prompt and effective steps are taken to modernise investigations in strict compliance with the BNSS and in line with the binding directions of the court.

Russia hits Kyiv with missile and drone attack, killing 6 and injuring 52
AP file photo Russia attacked Ukraine's capital with missiles and drones overnight, killing at least six people including a 6-year-old boy, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday. Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said at least 52 other people were injured in the attacks, and that the number was likely to rise. A large part of a nine-story residential building collapsed after it was struck, Tkachenko added. Rescue teams were at the scene to rescue people trapped under the rubble. 'Missile strike. Directly on a residential building. People are under the rubble. All services are on site,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on his official Telegram. Images from the scene showed plumes of smoke emanating from a partially damaged building and debris strewn on the ground. The force of the blast wave was strong enough to leave clothes hanging limply from trees. Residents defied police orders not to return to the scene of the attacks to retrieve their belongings. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko arrived at the scene. At least 27 locations across Kyiv were hit by the attack, Tkachenko said, with the heaviest damage seen in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Donating Sperm May Support Your Income SpellRock Undo US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he's giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline, Aug. 8, for peace efforts to make progress or Washington will impose punitive sanctions and tariffs. Lithuania Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas steps down after investigations and protests
Lithuania prime minister Gintautas Paluckas steps down after investigations and protests VILNIUS: Lithuania prime minister Gintautas Paluckas stepped down on Thursday following investigations into his business dealings that prompted protests in the Baltic country 's capital calling for his resignation. Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda announced Paluckas' resignation to the media on Thursday morning. A spokesperson for Paluckas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Paluckas, a newly established leader of the center-left Social Democrats, ascended to the role late last year after a three-party coalition formed following parliamentary elections in October. His entire cabinet is now expected also to resign, potentially leaving the country without an effective government weeks before Russia holds joint military exercises with neighboring Belarus. Lithuanian foreign policy is unlikely to change as a result of the government shakeup. Nausėda, who was elected separately, is the country's face on the world stage and has been one of the most stalwart supporters of Ukraine in its fight against invading Russian forces. Paluckas has recently been dogged by media investigations into his business and financial dealings. Several media outlets published investigations in July regarding Paluckas' past and present ventures and alleged mishandlings, including ones more than a decade ago. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adarsh Premia from ₹3.96 Cr* | Banashankari ADARSH DEVELOPERS Learn More Undo The Baltic country 's anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies subsequently launched their own probes. In a devastating blow to his reputation, the media also revealed that Paluckas never paid a significant part of a 16,500 euro fine ($19,039) in connection with a 2012 criminal case dubbed the "rat poison scandal." Paluckas was convicted of mishandling the bidding process for Vilnius' rat extermination services while serving as the capital city's municipality administration director. Judges for the country's top court in 2012 ruled that he abused his official position by illegally granting privileges to the company that offered the highest price in the bid. He was also sentenced to two years behind bars, but the sentence was suspended for one year and he ultimately was never imprisoned. The Social Democratic party leader denied any wrongdoing regarding his business affairs, labeling the criticism as part of a "coordinated attack" by political opponents. He resigned before the opposition could formally launch impeachment proceedings. New coalition talks are expected to start shortly to form a new cabinet.

"Hindu terror bogey busted," said BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia after the verdict. Live Events "Today, the Court has acquitted all accused, exposing how innocent individuals were branded as terrorists to satisfy political narratives and appease vote banks by the Congress," he said in a post on X. He added that it wasn't just a legal verdict but a moral indictment of those who defamed an entire faith for electoral gains. "Who will be held accountable for years of humiliation, injustice, and media trials? Will Rahul Gandhi apologise to the nation and all Hindus," Bhatia said in his post. According to Malviya, the "sinister conspiracy" by the Congress to manufacture the bogey of saffron terror has not just collapsed but been "buried for good" with the acquittal of all seven accused in the case. "Those like Sonia Gandhi, P Chidambaram, and Sushilkumar Shinde, who led this malicious campaign, owe an unconditional apology to Hindus for maligning Sanatan Dharma," he said in a post on X. Hindus can never be terrorists, Malviya asserted. Attacking the Congress, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said, "Home Minister (Amit Shah) said yesterday that Hindus cannot be terrorists. There is no such term as ' saffron terrorism '. Hindus never indulge in such disgraceful acts." All the blasts that happened between 2005 and 2013 were carried out in India at the behest of Pakistan but the Congress-led UPA government tried to create "communal tension" instead of catching Pakistani terrorists, he alleged. "This is the Congress' mindset. And it always practices China-friendly and pro-China politics, which has now been exposed," Dubey told PTI Videos in Parliament complex.
