OnBoard launched to aid Bengaluru's visually impaired bus passengers

Time of India12-07-2025
Bengaluru: In an effort to make public transport more inclusive, BMTC has implemented the OnBoard solution — a new assistive device to assist visually impaired individuals identify a specific route number bus they wish to board.
When a bus nears a stop, the user can press the 'Find' button, triggering an audio announcement of the route number through a speaker mounted on the bus. If it matches the intended route, pressing 'Select' alerts the driver and conductor, who can then assist the commuter in boarding.
The new system features a two-part communication setup: A handheld remote device carried by the user and a communication unit installed on the bus, mounted on the lower left front glass panel near the entry door.

BMTC conducted a pilot study involving 25 buses operating on routes 401K and 242B, which are frequently used by visually impaired commuters. The project included hands-on training for 500 users, with 25 active participants testing the system during the pilot phase.
Following the pilot, BMTC expanded the initiative to 100 more buses and plans to cover 500 buses in near future. On Saturday, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy officially launched the initiative in the presence of visually impaired passengers.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Continental Automotive Components India, Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, Raised Lines Foundation, Enable India.
Nithin T, a trainer for the OnBoard initiative, told TOI the system empowers visually impaired individuals to travel independently and confidently. "I'm visually impaired. Let's say I'm travelling from Yeshwantpur to Yelahanka (route 401).
When I'm at the bus stop and three or four buses arrive at once, I cannot identify the one I need. I have to depend on others or approach the crew, which is not always easy. OnBoard technology addresses this.
Using the handheld remote device, when I press the 'Find' button, it helps in identifying a bus which I intend to travel within a 30-metre radius that is equipped with the communication unit. When I press the 'Select' button, the unit alerts the driver that a passenger in need is about to board. The audio announcement also helps guide me to the door of the bus."
A similar process ensures support during alighting.

The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) on Thursday released the results of its July 2025 round of the Urban Consumer Confidence Survey ( UCCS ), which showed a marginal improvement in the sentiment of urban households . According to the bi-monthly survey conducted between July 1-12 across 19 major cities, covering 5,592 respondents, the Current Situation Index (CSI) rose to 96.5 in July from 95.4 in May, marking a 1.1-point increase. Desert Order Undo The Future Expectations Index (FEI), which captures consumer outlook for the next one year, also edged up by 1.3 points to 124.7 from 123.4 in the previous round, reflecting sustained optimism about the economic outlook, income growth, and future spending. Notably, pessimism surrounding the current price situation and inflation eased for the third straight survey round. The net response on price levels improved to -87.0 in July from -88.5 in May. Live Events While the net perception regarding current income improved to 2.1 (from 0.4 in May), expectations of future income remained broadly stable, with the net response rising marginally from 52.3 to 52.6. This indicates that while more households feel their incomes have improved recently, their expectations for the future remain steady. On employment front, the current sentiment dipped with the net response falling to -6.7 in July from -5.9 in May. However, forward-looking optimism persisted as expectations for employment in the next one year saw an uptick in the net response to 31.0 from 29.8 earlier. Spending trends continued to reflect strong consumer confidence. The net response for current spending improved to 78.0, while expectations for future spending rose to 80.0. This was supported by gains in non-essential spending, which registered a rare positive net sentiment of 0.4, a notable shift from -3.4 in May, and future expectations on this front climbed to 15.0 from 13.8. Essential spending remained consistently high with a net response of 86.5 for current perception and 86.2 for future expectations. The RBI reiterated that the views expressed in the survey are those of the respondents and may not necessarily reflect the central bank's own stance.

Vietnam trade beats estimates as buyers race Trump tariffs

Vietnam's exports jumped more than expected in July, with buyers racing to avoid a 20% tariff on the country's exports to the US set to take effect on Aug. 7. Exports rose 16% in July from a year earlier to $42.3 billion, the statistics office said in a statement, beating expectations of 14% growth. Imports rose 17.8% in the period to $40 billion, more than the 15.2% forecast. The trade surplus was $2.27 billion, versus $2.83 billion released in June. The country was initially threatened with a 46% import levy, though that has been lowered to 20%, just one percentage point more than for neighbors Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo 'Vietnam posted impressive export figures in July, mostly because companies were rushing to ship goods to the US ahead of the Trump tariffs ,' said Tran Tuan Minh, chief executive officer of TVI, a Hanoi-based equity research and investment firm. 'We expect exports to slow significantly later this year, mainly due to the 20% tariffs and especially the 40% rate on transshipments, which still remains quite unclear at this point.' The government said in a statement Wednesday that trade negotiators are working to 'actively continue' talks with Washington. It also reiterated plans to diversify its markets, aiming for trade agreements with the Middle East and India, while increasing domestic consumption of Vietnamese goods. Live Events Exports to the US rose 26% in July from a year earlier to $14.2 billion, according to separate customs data released Wednesday. Imports from China increased 30.5% to about $16.7 billion in July. Net exports to the US account for roughly a fifth of Vietnam's gross domestic product, and the tariffs pose a threat to factories which have boomed as companies have diversified their supply chains from China. Bloomberg The data was generally positive, with consumer prices rising 3.19% on year, slower than the 3.40% economist estimate and the 3.57% pace of June. Industrial production rose 8.5% on year, and 0.5% compared with June. Commodity exports also gained, with coffee exports rising to 103,000 tons, a 34.6% rise on a year earlier. The economy has been powering along in 2025, with gross domestic product rising 7.96% in the April-June period from a year earlier, according to data released last month. The government is aiming for 8% growth in 2025, though it's unclear whether the new US tariffs will derail that push.
