Ghassan Salameh receives families of Aug. 4 victims

BEIRUT — Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh on Monday received a delegation of families of victims of the Beirut port explosion at his office in the National Library.
They were joined by members of the awareness campaign "Al-Chahed al-Samet" (the silent witness), a representative from the indictments chamber, engineers, and heritage preservation groups. Advisory architect Jad Tabet was also in attendance.
The families of the Aug. 4 victims plan to hold a press conference Wednesday at noon at the Press Club in the Palm Center building, to announce and invite people to the commemorative and protest march on Aug. 4.
The meeting with the culture minister focused on the consequences of the port tragedy, the right of the victims' families to know the truth and see those responsible for this crime brought to justice. The delegation reiterated its demand that the Beirut port grain silos be dedicated as a memorial, as witnesses to the catastrophe, independently of upcoming judicial decisions.
Minister Salameh, for his part, emphasized that he has been following this issue for some time with all concerned parties, conducting numerous consultations with specialists and cultural heritage experts, in order to study reports on the status of the silos.
He expressed hope that a desirable decision would be reached before next Aug. 4, the fifth anniversary of the explosion.
The Beirut port tragedy, which claimed the lives of nearly 250 people and destroyed a significant part of the capital on Aug. 4, 2020, will be commemorated next month. Those responsible for the explosion, which was worsened by a large quantity of ammonium nitrate stored at the port, have yet to stand trial.
The latest development: former prosecutor general of the Court of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oueidate, did not appear Monday at a scheduled interrogation session before investigating Judge Tarek Bitar of the Court of Justice, who had summoned him as part of his investigation.

Derian and Sunni religious leaders visit Joumblatt

BEIRUT — Former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), Walid Joumblatt, on Monday received the grand mufti of the Republic, Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian, who was accompanied by a delegation from Dar al-Fatwa at his home in Beirut's Clemenceau district. The head of the Lebanese Democratic Party, Talal Arslane, and other Sunni muftis from Lebanese regions were also present at the meeting, after which Sheikh Derian stated that it was "friendly and constructive" and that others would follow, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA.) This meeting between the Druze leader and the highest representative of Sunni Islam in Lebanon comes amid recent sectarian tensions that have led to clashes between Druze factions and Sunni Bedouin tribes, backed by forces of the Damascus government, which left more than 1,200 people dead in a week in the Sweida region of southern Syria. This latest episode of sectarian violence in the neighboring country had raised fears that these tensions could spill over into Lebanon. In a joint statement issued following their meeting, the participants reaffirmed their commitment to 'national and Islamic unity in the face of those who seek to harm Lebanon and sisterly Syria,' and rejected 'any attempt to sow discord.' They condemned the 'bloody clashes between Syrian brothers in the Sweida region,' calling them 'unacceptable and deplorable,' and expressed sorrow for 'the martyrs who fell during these painful events.' The signatories called on 'all Lebanese forces to work toward strengthening the state, its people, and its institutions, to unite in efforts to revive the state so that it can fully fulfill its unifying role, and to come together in confronting the Zionist aggression that targets Lebanon, Syria, and other Arab countries, in pursuit of its hostile goals and sectarian, ethnic, and confessional agendas, which serve only the enemies of our countries, societies, and Arab and Islamic nation.' They also praised the 'wise and patriotic positions of all Lebanese parties that have called for Syrian unity, the prevention of internal conflict, and the preservation of Syria's territorial integrity, with the same concern they express for Lebanon — its people, state, and institutions.' Finally, the statement emphasized the importance of 'Lebanon's sovereignty, freedom, Arab identity, and independence, as well as its cooperation with all fellow Arab nations and friendly states committed to Lebanon, its people, and its civilizational role in the region.'

Kuwait imposes new sanctions against Hezbollah and al-Qard al-Hassan

BEIRUT — The Kuwaiti Foreign Affairs Ministry announced Monday sanctions imposed against the al-Qard al-Hassan Association (AQAH), considered the financial wing of Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to the Saudi media outlet al-Sharq al-Awsat. The Committee for 'the implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions' under the Kuwaiti ministry decided Monday to add Hezbollah, the AQAH association, as well as three individuals, including a Lebanese man, Adel Mansour, the designated leader of AQAH whose assets have been frozen, to its list of sanctioned entities. The two other sanctioned individuals are of Somali and Tunisian nationality. The Kuwaiti government has therefore called on all companies and financial institutions resident in the Gulf country to implement these measures and to cease all cooperation with any institution or person linked to Hezbollah. Sanctions initiated in 2021 At least seven individuals of Lebanese nationality are now under sanctions for their alleged involvement in a network of financial channels between Lebanon and Kuwait serving Hezbollah. The first of these were named by the U.S. Treasury (OFAC) for such activities in September 2021. Under U.S. Treasury sanctions since 2007, the AQAH association was targeted on July 14 by a circular from the Central Bank of Lebanon, formalizing the prohibition for all Lebanese banks and financial institutions from interacting with several entities linked to the pro-Iranian group. In November 2024, Kuwait arrested 18 people on its territory on suspicion of economic links Hezbollah. Earlier that year, in September, the United States announced the implementation of other sanctions against a network accused of "oil counterfeiting" between Kuwait and Lebanon for the benefit of Haret Hreik. This decision by Kuwaiti diplomacy is part of a long series of initiatives over the past months against Hezbollah's economic systems in Lebanon and internationally, in an effort to undermine any reconstruction of its financial resources.
