Trump declares massive income ahead of 79th birthday bash

Trump declares massive income ahead of 79th birthday bash originally appeared on TheStreet. President Donald Trump is celebrating his 79th birthday today. Often called "the first crypto president," he was born on June 14, 1946 in New York and became the president of the U.S. for the second time in January this year. Trump's second term has seen his administration pursue an aggressive pro-crypto policy. However, the involvement of him and the Trump family with multiple crypto ventures has also raised eyebrows. On June 13, the president filed a public financial disclosure with the Office of Government Ethics, which revealed that he earned approximately $600 million in revenue, with his several golf resorts themselves contributing $217.7 million. Trump's engagement with the crypto project, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), earned him $57.35 million in income. In addition, Trump also holds 15.75 billion WLFI tokens. His personal crypto wallet is valued at between $1,000,001 and $5 million. World Liberty Financial is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that was co-founded in 2024 by Zach Witkoff, the son of Trump's old confidante and the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. While the president himself is the chief crypto advocate at the project, his sons Donald Jr., Eric, and Barron act as its ambassadors. The Trump family holds a 60% stake in the project. The president also raked in millions of dollars in royalty payments from the sale of branded items, such as fragrances, sneakers, watches, etc. In addition to World Liberty Financial, the Trump family is involved with multiple crypto projects, such as the TRUMP and MELANIA meme coins, the USD1 stablecoin, Bitcoin mining, and crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Crypto legislation just had a 'gigantic' week. Here's why.

Bitcoin (BTC=F) is holding above $100K despite market jitters tied to tensions in the Middle East. Axios crypto reporter Brady Dale joins Morning Brief host Brad Smith to break down the pivotal week in crypto legislation and what congressional stablecoin action could mean for bitcoin. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief here. Bitcoin is still holding above the $100,000 level but losing some ground as stocks slump amid increasing Mideast tension. We're taking a look at crypto-related stocks as well, including Coinbase, also largely lower along with the broader market. So does this spell the end of the Rico rally for right now, or could impending legislation. And a crypto friendly administration proved to be a boost. I wanna bring in Brady Dale, Axio's crypto reporter here. Brady, good to have you back on the program with us. Just take us into your evaluation of what the mindset around riskier portions of the investment thesis, riskier assets like crypto, especially within the broader playing out of the Middle East tensions right now, how that is typical and what we should expect this time around. Yeah, I mean, I think probably what investors are looking at is does this war get a lot worse? And so I think that's why some people backed out. Now, keep in mind, the amount that, uh, Bitcoin is down right now is roughly 2% and, in the crypto markets, that could have just been like a very lackluster Tuesday. You know, I mean, the markets can easily move that much on nothing at all. So really this is kind of a smaller shift down than I would have. Expected for something that could end up being so much bigger than it has become so far. Yeah, certainly. It's also been a big week we know for cryptocurrency. You've got everyone from the president even opining in and weighing in. I saw our own Brian Sazi, executive editor, post a video where even at the most recent conference that was taking place here in New York, there is still within the conversation this willingness or want and desire. To make sure that the administration is positioning itself as continuously crypto friendly, how's that playing out? I mean this was a gigantic week in crypto legislation, um, you know, more in the Congress side, um, genius, the Genius Bill, which is about stablecoins, uh, got a cloture vote for a second time in the Senate, teamed up for a very likely final passage vote sometime I think we're looking at Tuesday right now, uh, and so that's been a big fight in the Senate and then over in the House, uh, two different committees, uh, the Ad committee and the House Financial Services Committee. Voted the Clarity Act to the floor, and that's an act that would just sort of decide how disclosures and regulations would work for cryptocurrency. And then on top of that, the final big regulator got a hearing in the in the Senate, Brian Quintends the CFTC. So it was a gigantic week in crypto legislation. If the stablecoin legislation is able to move forward, what what does that mean for, of course, the poster child of crypto in in Bitcoin? Uh, yeah, that is the big interesting question. You know, historically, thus far, when, uh, there has been more activity of really any kind in the cryptocurrency market, like, you know, your viewers might remember the ICO craze of 2017, which was really all about Ethereum, that drove a ton of, uh, value to Bitcoin regardless. So that's what we'd expect. But you know, it could be that these things are starting to decouple. You know, stablecoins are a financial utility. People can use them for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with Bitcoin, so it could be that stablecoins explode and we see a modest bump to Bitcoin, but no direct gigantic gain. Or it could be that the explosion of stablecoins brings a lot more energy to Bitcoin. We just, we just don't know right now. I mean, we're entering into a very new world. Yeah, I imagine some of the prominent profiles that were promoting ICOs, and then got dinged by the SEC certainly remember that period very well. Barry, thanks so much for taking the time. Thank you.

GameStop Has Taken a Page Out of MicroStrategy's Playbook. Can It Save the Struggling Stock?

After it began buying massive amounts of Bitcoin in 2020, MicroStrategy stock has generated some of the best returns in the stock market. GameStop has struggled after its meme stock run in 2021, but it recently began following in MicroStrategy's footsteps. 10 stocks we like better than GameStop › In 2020, MicroStrategy (now doing business as Strategy) and its co-founder Michael Saylor embarked on a novel concept. They began using the company's capital to buy Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency. Saylor believed that the token's finite supply could make it a hedge against inflation and, therefore, a smart investment. Saylor's bet would pay off far better than anyone could have imagined. MicroStrategy stock has rocketed roughly 2,970% (as of June 9) since the company's first Bitcoin purchase, and the company gained enough credibility that it could raise fresh capital from the capital markets to go out and buy Bitcoin. The company now owns over 2.5% of all outstanding Bitcoin tokens and refers to itself as a Bitcoin treasury company. Seeing the company's success, as well as Bitcoin's continued appreciation, other companies are now taking a page from MicroStrategy's playbook. The struggling video game retailer GameStop (NYSE: GME), which saw its share price explode during the meme stock craze in 2020 and 2021, recently made a big purchase of Bitcoin too. Can this strategy save the struggling stock? It's been a long and chaotic journey for GameStop, the brick-and-mortar giant of the video game universe. As foot traffic declined in malls and digital video game purchases became more common, GameStop stock struggled, leading many institutional investors to make big short bets against the stock. In 2019, legendary investor Michael Burry, who correctly bet against the housing market right before the Great Recession, took a sizable position in GameStop, believing that shares were undervalued. Still, short interest continued to climb, at one point reaching over 63% of outstanding shares. Once the pandemic hit, essentially closing the economy for months and making the outlook for retail even more negative, it looked like the stock could be doomed. However, the emergence of viral YouTubers like Keith Gill (Roaring Kitty) and the popular Reddit subgroup WallStreetBets encouraged retail investors to load up on the stock. This group of investors also refused to sell the stock, in order to create the mother of all short squeezes. From a low of $3.97 per share in 2019, GameStop soared to close to $500 per share at one point before Robinhood and other online brokerages suspended the ability to buy shares in what would lead to a controversial series of events. GameStop stock has remained volatile, although the company's market cap remains over $13 billion. Today, Ryan Cohen, the co-founder of Chewy and formerly an activist investor in GameStop, is now CEO, but the core business is still struggling to find direction. GameStop managed to report a profitable year in fiscal 2024 as management slashed expenses and tried launching into some more modern businesses. However, net sales fell roughly 27.5% for the year. In the company's recently reported fiscal 2025 first quarter, GameStop generated nearly $45 million of net income, a significant improvement from the $32 million loss it reported a year ago. However, revenue fell 16.9%, and the improvement largely came from lowering expenses. In March, GameStop announced it would raise $1.3 billion in capital through convertible senior notes in order to purchase Bitcoin. The company made its first $500 million-plus purchase of Bitcoin at the end of May. Cohen attributed the company's decision to start buying Bitcoin to broader economic risks in the prevailing market. "If the thesis is correct, Bitcoin and gold as well can be a hedge against global currency devaluation and systemic risk," Cohen said at a Bitcoin conference in Las Vegas earlier this year. "Bitcoin has certain unique advantages compared to gold, the portability aspect of it. It's instantly transferable across the globe. [...] It's instantly verified via the blockchain. [...] There's the scarcity element of it as well." Analysts have been skeptical about whether this strategy can really work, and GameStop still seems to be at least somewhat propped up by meme traders. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter recently issued a research note assigning GameStop an underperform rating, primarily due to a "baffling" valuation gap between GameStop and MicroStrategy. While MicroStrategy trades at roughly 1.8 times the value of the Bitcoin it owns, GameStop trades at roughly 2.4 times its cash value. The purchase of Bitcoin does not make GameStop a buy. The core business, while having made some improvements, does not appear to have a clear or sustainable long-term strategy. Sure, if GameStop keeps buying Bitcoin and its price keeps rising, then the stock may continue to move higher. But now, what was already an extremely volatile stock to begin with is essentially becoming a levered play on Bitcoin. This is far too risky a name for retail investors to own when they can always purchase Bitcoin themselves or a spot exchange-traded fund instead of GameStop.
