Al Arabi, the reigning champions, advanced to the semi-finals of the 2024-2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship despite suffering a significant 143-97 defeat against Al Sadd during the final round of the group stage on Thursday evening at Al Gharafa Sports Hall.
Al Arabi secured their place in the last four by accumulating seven points, finishing at the top of their group, while Al Ahli also ended with seven points but placed second. Al Sadd, with six points, was eliminated from the group stage.
The match showcased exceptional offensive skills and thrilling moments from both teams. Al Arabi took an early lead, winning the first quarter 33-30, utilizing quick transitions and effective mid-range shooting.
However, Al Sadd made a strong comeback in the second quarter, establishing a significant advantage of 35-18, largely due to the outstanding performance of their American player, Archie Lee Goodwin, who scored 38 points, becoming the top scorer of the game.
As Al Arabi struggled to maintain their defensive and offensive flow, Al-Sadd continued to assert their dominance in the third quarter with a score of 37-25, characterized by excellent teamwork and physical play. In the final quarter, Al Sadd further increased their lead to 41-21, ultimately winning the game by a substantial margin of 46 points.
Mustafa Hussein, the standout player from Al Arabi, led the team as the highest scorer with 21 points, showcasing an impressive performance despite the intense pressure exerted by Al Sadd on their key players. Although Al Arabi faced a significant defeat, their earlier successes in the group provided them with a points lead that ensured their first-place finish, placing them ahead of Al Ahli, who fell to second with 7 points.
In a separate game, Al Gharafa secured a thrilling victory against Qatar SC, winning 98-80. Al Gharafa commenced the game with a strong performance, taking the first quarter 25-15, and maintained their superiority in the second quarter with a score of 23-18.
They continued to dominate in the third quarter, winning 24-13. Although Qatar SC made a comeback in the fourth quarter, winning it 34-26, it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
Consequently, Al Gharafa increased their total to 6 points, positioning themselves in third place, while Qatar SC remained in fifth and last place with 4 points. Maki Zion Juan Richard from Al Gharafa SC was named the best player of the game, scoring 36 points, while Dejan Janic led Qatar SC with 34 points.
The Group B competitions concluded with Al Rayyan Club advancing to the semi-finals after finishing first in the group with 6 points from three consecutive victories. Al Wakrah secured second place with 5 points, followed by Al Shamal with 4 points.
They will play the 'round robin' stage with the second- and third-place finishers in Group A.
Al Ahli, runner-up in Group A, will meet Al Shamal, third in Group B, at 5pm on May 12, 2025. Al Gharafa, third in Group A, will meet Al Wakrah, runner-up in Group B, at 7pm on the same day. Both games will be played in a knockout format at Al Gharafa Sports Hall.

DPA Paris Iga Swiatek's reign as the queen of clay was ended by Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals of the French Open on Thursday, and so was the dream run of French wildcard entry Lois Boisson. The irresistible force beat the immovable object as runaway world number one Sabalenka inflicted the four-time champion's first defeat at the tournament in four years. In the first meeting between the WTA's two most dominant players at a grand slam since the 2022 US Open, Swiatek's run of 26 consecutive victories at the Paris grand slam was halted in a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-0 defeat. After a semi-final which would have graced the final - and it probably would have been had Swiatek's ranking not slipped to five - Sabalenka said: 'Honestly it feels incredible. 'I understand the job is not done yet but I'm thrilled with the performance and this win.' A three-time grand slam champion on hard courts, Sabalenka finally made her first final on the red dirt of Roland Garros. There she will face world number two Coco Gauff as Boisson finally ran out of juice and the American managed to dilute the Paris crowd with a composed 6-1 6-2 victory. France's Boisson, the world number 361, sent shockwaves around Roland Garros by becoming the first wildcard to reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old from Dijon proved she could cut the mustard having knocked out third seed Jessica Pegula and sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva before finally going out. 'Lois is an incredible player and for her to have the tournament she's had, she's shown she's one of the best players in the world,' Gauff said. 'I hope we have many more battles in the future, especially here, Today it was just my day. 'I knew 99% of the crowd would be for her. When they were chanting her name in my head I just chanted mine, to psyche myself up.' Sabalenka's powerful, deep returns meanwhile unsettled 24-year-old Swiatek at the start as she raced into a 3-0 lead with two breaks. The Belarusian thought she had served an ace for a 5-1 lead, only for a let call from umpire Kader Nouni, who felt it had flicked the net cord. The momentum suddenly shifted with Swiatek winning four successive games, before Sabalenka held and then produced a stunning forehand winner on the run to break for 6-5. She could not hold, though, with Swiatek's returns now doing considerable damage, but Sabalenka regrouped impressively to take the tie-break for the concession of just one point. The quality increased in the second set, so much so that any slight mistake from one player was brutally punished by the other. Polish star Swiatek was making far more forays to the net than usual, and it paid off when a perfect cushioned volley into the corner levelled the match. Sabalenka's levels - including her noise levels - moved up a notch again in the decider and the 27-year-old drew first blood with a break for 2-0. A second break knocked the stuffing out of the defending champion, who looked resigned to her fate long before Sabalenka's final backhand winner flew past her. Swiatek, now without a single title to her name - her last was Roland Garros 12 months ago - said: ' I love playing here, so for sure I'm happy that I was fortunate enough to play so many great tournaments here. 'Even this one, you know, I feel like I played better than in the weeks before. I'm just happy that I have this place to come back to every year and just try to push myself.' The other semi-final was one of enormous contrasts, Boisson's career earnings before this tournament totalled around $135,000 while Gauff - a year younger - has amassed some $24 million. However, Boisson will at least be $780,000 better off after her fortnight's work in the French capital. She can also console herself with a climb in the rankings of 296 places to 65 - she has gone from French number 24 to number one - and a likely wildcard for Wimbledon. Gauff, the French Open runner-up in 2022, opened up a 4-0 lead before most of the Court Philippe-Chatrier patrons had retaken their seats - presumably they had been for a boisson or two - following Sabalenka's three-set win over Swiatek. The heavy topspin forehands which previously accounted for five players were not firing, and even when she got a break back at the start of the second set, Gauff quickly snuffed out the mini French revolution. Victory was sealed in an hour and nine minutes to break French hearts while Gauff will get a second chance at glory in Paris on Saturday. Boisson was due to make her Roland Garros debut last year but suffered an ACL injury just before the tournament which left her fearing her career could be over. 'We know that particular injury is very complicated, but at the beginning, yes, I kind of lost faith because I didn't know what was to come next, and I didn't know that things could go so well,' she said. 'I was really worried at one point, but as the rehabilitation progressed, I realised that things are getting better. Today I'm super happy with what's happening.'

Liverpool turn down Barca's approach for winger Diaz: Report
PAMedia/dpa London Liverpool have rebuffed an approach by Barcelona for winger Luis Diaz. The Colombia international has been a target for the La Liga champions for some time, although he has also been attracting interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. Only last month Barça's sporting director Deco publicly named Diaz, and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, when talking about their transfer plans. However, the PA news agency understands when the Catalan club made an approach to Liverpool on Wednesday they were told they had no intention of selling. Diaz turned 28 in January and has two years remaining on his current deal but it is believed there are currently no plans to open negotiations on any extension. However, with Darwin Nunez expected to depart this summer and the future of Federico Chiesa in doubt after a frustrating debut season in which he made just 14 appearances, Arne Slot's Premier League-winning forward line already looks like losing two of its members. The arrival of Florian Wirtz, with discussions ongoing with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer fee after a recent £109 million ($148.3 million) bid was rejected, will likely offset the impact of that - especially as Nunez and Chiesa contributed just nine goals between them. But it is understood potentially losing a third member of the attack would only be sanctioned if there was a bid which allows Liverpool to significantly improve the team or if the player agitated for a move. Last month Diaz told American-Spanish television channel Telemundo: 'For me, I'd stay however many years it takes.' Liverpool have already recruited Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen to strengthen their right side following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and are looking to bolster the left with a move for Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.

Gauff fights off Keys to make last four
PA Media/DPA Paris Coco Gauff passed her biggest test so far at the French Open as she scrapped her way past fellow American Madison Keys to reach the semi-finals. A scruffy match featuring a combined 101 unforced errors and 14 breaks of serve ended 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, 6-1 in favour of the world number two. Gauff had previously not dropped a set as she quietly made her way through the friendlier side of the draw. But in a nervy first set on both sides of the net, Gauff overturned a 4-1 deficit to force a set point at 5-4, only to be taken to a tie-break which Keys won. Gauff went 4-1 up in the second but found herself pegged back, before a break and a hold took the match into a decider. The confidence had drained from Australian Open champion Keys while Gauff finally located her serve, having coughed up nine double faults over the first two sets. A pass down the line brought up three match points and the 21-year-old roared with delight when Keys went long, giving her the victory in two hours and 11 minutes. 'Maddie was playing well, she's hitting the ball so fast and so low so I was just trying to fight for each point,' said Gauff. 'I knew I had to be able to run today and as soon as the ball came short, punish her for it. 'It means a lot, getting through this tough match. I'm very happy to get through. I'll savour this one today and be ready for tomorrow's match.'
