Al Rayyan emerge as Amir Cup basketball champions
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan clinched the 2024–2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship after defeating Al Arabi 77–70 in a thrilling final held at the Al Gharafa Indoor Sports Hall on Thursday. Al Rayyan overcame early pressure from Al Arabi to claim the prestigious crown. Al Arabi started strong, edging the first period 14-13. Al Rayyan responded by taking a narrow lead in the second period (26-24), but Al Arabi came back in the third quarter with a 20-17 run. In the decisive final period, Al Rayyan dominated with a 21-12 surge, sealing the victory and the championship. Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb crowned Al Rayyan as champions in front of a vibrant crowd. The match featured a standout performance by Al Rayyan's Abdullah Yassin Musa, who led all scorers with 18 points. Al Arabi's Abdulrahman Saad and Mustafa Hussein also impressed, each contributing 17 points in a strong but ultimately unsuccessful effort. With this victory, Al Rayyan have now claimed a record 10 Amir Cup titles, further cementing their status as the most successful team in the tournament's history. Notably, their dominance began in the inaugural 1999-2000 edition, where they also triumphed over Al Arabi in the final. Al Mughaiseeb said, 'We at the federation are very happy with Al Rayyan's return to the top of the league. This distinguished club has a long history in Qatari basketball, and its return to winning after years of absence restores balance and strong competition among the clubs.' He also praised Al Arabi's performance, saying, 'We must commend Al Arabi's performance this season. They were a fierce and won the league title, the Qatar Cup, and, before that, the Arab Championship, which was hosted by Alexandria. This demonstrates the club's distinguished administrative and technical work.' For his part, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari praised the high technical level displayed in the Amir Cup final, stressing that the game lived up to expectations in terms of performance, organization, and crowd attendance. 'Today's final was an example of what basketball should be like in Qatar. The performance of both teams was outstanding and the fans were a key partner in the event's success.'

Tribune News Network Doha Qatari basketball fans would head towards Al Gharafa Arena on Thursday evening for the highly anticipated final of the 2024-2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship, the 26th edition, to be held at 6:30pm. The clash is expected to be a traditional, exciting, and competitive encounter between Al Rayyan and Al Arabi. Al Rayyan reached the final after overcoming Al Ahli in the semi-finals, winning the first round, 88-79. Al Ahli won the second round 85-82, and Al Rayyan won the third and decisive round 106-73. For their part, Al Arabi qualified for the final after overcoming Al Wakrah in the semi-finals, winning the first and second rounds 111-84 and 104-75, respectively. The Amir Cup Basketball Championship was first held in the 1999-2000 season, and Al Rayyan won the first edition of the prestigious cup defeating Al Arabi in the final. Al Rayyan are the team that have reached the final the most times, with 15 out of 26 appearances. They also hold the record for the most titles, with nine, compared to five for Al Gharafa, four for Al Sadd, three for Al Arabi, and two for Qatar SC and El Jaish.

Al Rayyan won 106-73, following a balanced performance in which the team excelled throughout the four periods. Both teams entered the match with ambitions of victory and not letting the opportunity to reach the final slip away. Al Rayyan imposed their dominance from the start, showcasing its offensive harmony and defensive solidity, ending the first period with a commanding score of 28-13, sending Al Ahli into an early warning. In the second quarter, Al Rayyan's pace did not slow down, but rather increased in momentum, continuing to dominate and impose their control over the game. This was achieved through collective brilliance, especially from the back line, securing the period with a score of 30-16, ending the first half with a comfortable lead of 58-29. While some thought Al Rayyan would easily win the match, Al Ahli's response in the third period was completely different. Al Ahli's 'Dean' returned with a fighting spirit, led by Raeqwon Rogers, who shouldered the team's burden. They succeeded in winning the period with a score of 22-20, narrowing the gap and restoring some balance to the equation, but without seriously threatening the outcome. Al Arabi showed a solid performance, achieving a resounding victory over Al Wakrah (111-84), clearly dominating from the start. Al Rayyan demonstrated their readiness to fight for the title by securing a valuable victory over Al Ahli 88-79 in a difficult encounter that featured similar technical levels and was characterized by competitiveness throughout the four periods. The semi-final matches will continue with the second round on Saturday, May 17, 2025, where Al Arabi will face Al Wakrah and Al Rayyan will face Al Ahli again. Both Al Wakrah and Al Ahli will hope to secure a victory and return to the competition, forcing a third playoff, scheduled—if necessary—for Monday, May 19, 2025. Al Arabi secure Amir Cup basketball semi-final ticket

Al Arabi secured their place in the last four by accumulating seven points, finishing at the top of their group, while Al Ahli also ended with seven points but placed second. Al Sadd, with six points, was eliminated from the group stage. The match showcased exceptional offensive skills and thrilling moments from both teams. Al Arabi took an early lead, winning the first quarter 33-30, utilizing quick transitions and effective mid-range shooting. However, Al Sadd made a strong comeback in the second quarter, establishing a significant advantage of 35-18, largely due to the outstanding performance of their American player, Archie Lee Goodwin, who scored 38 points, becoming the top scorer of the game. As Al Arabi struggled to maintain their defensive and offensive flow, Al-Sadd continued to assert their dominance in the third quarter with a score of 37-25, characterized by excellent teamwork and physical play. Maki Zion Juan Richard from Al Gharafa SC was named the best player of the game, scoring 36 points, while Dejan Janic led Qatar SC with 34 points. The Group B competitions concluded with Al Rayyan Club advancing to the semi-finals after finishing first in the group with 6 points from three consecutive victories. Al Wakrah secured second place with 5 points, followed by Al Shamal with 4 points. They will play the 'round robin' stage with the second- and third-place finishers in Group A. Al Ahli, runner-up in Group A, will meet Al Shamal, third in Group B, at 5pm on May 12, 2025. Al Gharafa, third in Group A, will meet Al Wakrah, runner-up in Group B, at 7pm on the same day. Both games will be played in a knockout format at Al Gharafa Sports Hall.
