Insider Says Dolphins Should Sign Stephon Gilmore as Jalen Ramsey Replacement

Yahoo07-05-2025

One of the main storylines of the Miami Dolphins' offseason has been the trade rumors swirling around All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. With Dolphins' general manager Chris Grier mentioning their desire to trade Ramsey, multiple additions must be made in the cornerback room by the start of the year.
In a segment on NFL Network, NFL Insider for NFL Network and Fox Sports Brian Baldinger called for the Dolphins to sign free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Baldinger said, "It seems like Stephon Gilmore going to South Beach, that's good for an older guy."
Gilmore is 34 years old and will turn 35 at the beginning of the season. Bringing him in would not cost a lot and would immediately upgrade any cornerback on the roster not named Ramsey.
If the Dolphins trade Ramsey, adding Gilmore would be a huge need, as their cornerback room would be severely limited in his absence. Storm Duck, Cam Smith, and rookie fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr. would be the primary outside cornerbacks.

That group is not good enough for the Dolphins' current state as a franchise. It's not a rebuilding year; the Dolphins have Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle under contract. The Dolphins need to compete now, and their cornerback room, other than Ramsey, needs an upgrade.

Gilmore could come into that room and immediately start. Baldinger also believes that Gilmore would be a good fit and play well for them. "I feel like Stephon could fit in down there and play well for them right now."
The 13-year veteran is a five-time Pro-Bowler, with two All-Pros and a Defensive Player of the Year award from 2019 with the New England Patriots. Gilmore has 32 interceptions across 180 games and 173 starts in his NFL career.
If the Dolphins did sign Gilmore, it would be his third team in the AFC East; only the New York Jets wouldn't have had Gilmore on their team for a time.
Miami clearly need an outside cornerback, and adding someone of Gilmore's caliber would be a huge addition to a secondary that could be losing an incredible player in Ramsey.

Former Bengals coach already on the hot seat elsewhere in the NFL

Former Bengals coach already on the hot seat elsewhere in the NFL Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor might be on the hot seat in 2025, sure. But what about a former understudy such as Brian Callahan? After one year with the Tennessee Titans, Callahan is already registering on the hot-seat watch from onlookers such as Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus: 'Under Callahan's guidance, Tennessee ended a woeful 3-14 in 2024. Callahan's offensive success with the Bengals hardly translated, as the Titans ended the year 29th in EPA per play, 25th in success rate and 27th in average yards per play.' RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route Callahan was fortunate to land with a Titans team that was a little more patient than some last year, considering Jerod Mayo and Antonio Pierce were let go after one season each. But the clock is certainly ticking in Tennessee. Callahan got to play his part in drafting No. 1 pick Cam Ward. If he can work his magic like he did with Joe Burrow, he'll do just fine. If there aren't immediate results, though, it's hard to know just how patient the Titans can be during Ward's critical developmental window beyond 2025. As for Taylor and the Bengals, he could be right there on the hot seat by the end of 2025 if the season doesn't go as planned, especially now that he's re-tooled major parts of his coaching staff, implying better results. Bengals Must Stop 'Distracting' From Contending

Bengals Must Stop 'Distracting' From Contending originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cincinnati Bengals are making themselves look silly right now. No, not the players or coaches. Ownership. In a summer that should bring excitement for the fanbase, we're instead talking and writing about contract disputes and holdouts. Advertisement Why? Money. And it's a bad look for the franchise, and ultimately, the league. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin hit the nail on the head when he wrote, "It's money. It always is in Cincinnati." "The grass is green. The sun is bright. What else marks summer in the NFL? Oh, that's right, the Cincinnati Bengals refusing to spend money," Benjamin wrote. "Now we're talking. Mandatory minicamps are wrapping up around the league, and the headlining discussion about the Bengals isn't Joe Burrow coming off an NFL-leading 43-touchdown season. It's not Ja'Marr Chase coming off an NFL-leading 1,708-yard receiving season. Or Al Golden taking over the defense. Or Cincinnati's chances of outlasting the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs in the hunt for AFC glory. "It's money. It always is in Cincinnati. And not for the right reasons." Advertisement It seems like the Bengals go halfway and then stop short of the ultimate roster goal. They paid two stars and kept Joe Burrow happy. But on the other side of the ball, they're making up for it by being overly frugal. And Benjamin thinks it's taking away from what should be a summer to celebrate accomplishments. "This should've been the offseason of celebration for Bengals brass. After all, the front office finally paid Chase and Tee Higgins, investing in Burrow's top playmakers with not only words but actions. This was the Bengals' big pivot, from reluctant spenders to willing championship hunters! Except, months later, we're right back to square one with a notoriously -- dare we say dangerously -- frugal organization." Bengals Center Ted Karras Has No Regrets

Bengals Center Ted Karras Has No Regrets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Two of the players that have had the most buzz surrounding them this offseason are Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson and Shemar Stewart. Advertisement Both guys have not yet signed with the team for a few different reasons, and there has been a bit of a feeling of hostility as a result. But in a recent interview, Bengals center Ted Karras said that there is no bad blood in the locker room. "The main thing I want to say is, I don't think, to either of our defensive ends, that there's any harboring resentment in this locker room to them, and I really hope that both camps can figure this out because we have a really good team," Karras said. "We've had a super productive spring, and you just don't want this to carry over into summer." Hendrickson and the Bengals have not been able to agree on a new contract, so it seems likely that the star edge rusher will likely be playing elsewhere in 2025. Which is too bad, because he led the NFL in sacks this past season, which any team would love to have. As for Stewart, he remains the only player from the 2025 NFL Draft that has not yet been signed to his rookie deal. The team would love to get that done, as it would help them with depth off the edge, especially if Hendrickson leaves. Advertisement Cincinnati allowed the eighth-most yards in the league this past season, so they could use all the help they can get on the defensive side of the ball.
