58% Hit-And-Run Victims Are Senior Citizens: DCP Matani
Citing traffic analysis data, Matani said, "Most fatal accidents involving senior citizens occur before 10am, during their morning walks or commutes. Due to age-related decline in reflexes, many are unable to react swiftly to oncoming vehicles." He added that poor visibility during early morning hours further impairs drivers' ability to spot pedestrians, making reflective gear critical.
"In 2024, out of 104 pedestrian deaths, 60 were senior citizens.
This year, 51 such deaths have occurred so far, with 30 being elderly victims. Our efforts, like distributing reflective bands, are aimed at reducing these numbers," Matani said. He also highlighted the success of Operation U-Turn, stating that it has led to zero accidents at previously dangerous intersections.
Navil Kasad, a volunteer from traffic NGO Janakrosh, spoke about citizen-police collaboration. "We've been associated with the traffic department since childhood, but after retirement, Janakrosh gave us a way to contribute again.
We spread awareness that traffic rules exist for your safety — neither the police nor we gain anything from enforcing them."
Kasad also stressed that many riders wear helmets without securing the straps, which renders them ineffective in accidents. "We need defensive driving and genuine safety habits," he said.
Joint commissioner of police Navinchandra Reddy said that the department has intensified action through operations like Thunder, Shakti, and U-Turn.
"Initially, there was resistance to Operation U-Turn, but now 50–100 offenders are booked daily. Drunk driving is our main focus, as it endangers not just the driver but all road users," he said.

Citizen Support Key to Crackdowns: CP Singal
Nagpur: Commissioner of police Ravinder Singal on Friday credited strong citizen collaboration and NGO partnerships for the success of ongoing traffic and crime crackdowns in the city.
"Whether it's humid or pouring rain, my officers stand overnight at nakabandis. We've stayed committed in all conditions," he said. He added that citizen participation had been instrumental in the massive crackdowns in Operation Thunder, which was one of the country's most extensive enforcement drives.
Singal noted that in the past 19 months, more than 600 crimes have been reduced compared to last year, and 63 fewer deaths have occurred in the last seven months alone.
"This shows we're moving in the right direction," he said.
Despite requests from clubs to avoid checkpoints, Singal said, "If you're drunk, get someone else to drive. We will continue nakabandis."
Traffic teams prepare detailed reports daily, and inputs from youth groups are also being welcomed. "Pedestrian deaths and young lives lost to rash driving are alarming. We are working with young citizens to plan awareness drives that truly benefit them," Singal added.

Nagpur Police Task Force soon to crush ‘D-gangs' usurping prime land with forged documents
Nagpur: The Nagpur city police are set to form a 'Task Force' with an aim to dismantle the notorious 'D-gangs' that have terrorised the city's real estate sector. The term 'D-gang', on the lines of the D-gang of international don Dawood Ibrahim, was coined to describe the land mafia that used duplicate documents and forged govt records to usurp and sell prime properties. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The gangs are taking unfair advantage of city's rapid progress towards becoming a metropolitan, with projects like Mihan-SEZ and Metro rail extension driving land prices upwards, said sources adding these 'D-gangs' have targeted vulnerable people, including farmers, senior citizens and women. According to sources, the Task Force will prioritise dismantling these networks, tracing forged documents and arresting kingpins. The Task Force is the brainchild of commissioner of police Ravinder Singal. "We have identified names of some big fish among the land mafia. A dedicated and focused team is being set up. Stringent legal actions will be taken against the syndicate," he said. As per police records, there have been over 150 land-grabbing complaints in the past year alone, with many involving violence or coercion. The Task Force is expected to be operational within weeks, with initial targets including gangs linked to big-scale encroachments in areas where new plots and layouts are coming up along Wardha Road, Godhni, Mihan, north Nagpur's few patches and so on. This is, however, not the first such initiative by the city police to take on the land mafia. During former CP K Venkatesham's tenure, a special investigation team (SIT) was formed, but it lost momentum after a couple of months despite strong actions, including a crackdown on Gwalbanshi groups. The city police's latest move is seen as a decisive step towards curbing the land mafia menace. However, experts warn that without systemic reforms, the mafia's ugly head may rise again.

Fake ID scam: Assam police nab cyber fraud mastermind in Kolkata; used fake Aadhaar, PAN to secure loans worth Rs 1 crore
GUWAHATI: Assam Police have arrested Shoriful Islam , a fraudster, from Kolkata, for duping several financial institutions through identity theft using fake Aadhaar cards and phone numbers. Islam, a resident of Morigaon district in central Assam, has been identified as a key mastermind of cyber fraud in Morigaon district, had targeted leading private sector banks and other financial institutions that provided loans, according to police. On Saturday, Islam was remanded to five days police custody by a local court in Morigaon after he was brought to Assam on a transit demand on Friday. The arrest took place at a guest house in New Market Police Station area in Kolkata on Thursday with coordinated efforts of Morigaon police with Kolkata Police. Four cases have been registered against Islam in different police stations across central Assam's Morigaon district. His property was attached as per provision of U/S-107 BNSS. He was involved in multiple cyber fraud cases. "He was cheating the banks and financial institutions by submitting fake Aadhaar cards and using fake mobile SIM cards," Morigaon SP Hemanta Kumar Das told TOI, on Saturday. Morigaon Police informed that Islam was involved in multiple cyber fraud cases, including illegal procurement of loans from Aditya Birla Finance Ltd. and Axis Bank. Morigaon additional SP (crime) Samiran Baishya said that Islam had been on the run for the past two and a half years, evading capture in Assam and other states. "As per preliminary investigation, he was hiding in 12 to 13 states of India," Baishya said. Police have also received information regarding his foreign visits, and his passport is being verified. During last couple of years, police sources said that he was also hiding in Bangladesh and Thailand. A senior official explained, "PAN number of some established businessmen from 'outside' the state, who have good cibil score, are collected by such fraudsters like Islam from some sources. Then, fake Aadhaar cards are made by the fraudsters with that PAN number in the name of that PAN card holder. There are some tactful steps in stealing identity." The official added that there is a significant market for fake SIM cards, which are essential for obtaining OTPs for loan approvals before being destroyed after securing the loans. "When loans are not returned, then only after further verification, the banks and financial institutions come to know that they have been deceived. However, the photo grabs collected at the time of video tele verification earlier has helped in finding out the culprits," a senior police official said. Fraudsters employ multiple tactics, including repaying initial loan amounts to secure larger loans subsequently, sources said. Police safety net for lonely senior citizens, elderly couples
Nagpur: The city police's specialised unit for family grievance redressal, Bharosa Cell, continues to strengthen its Senior Citizen Assistance Scheme, safeguarding 221 senior citizens living alone and 1,703 elderly couples under its vigilant watch. In 2025, the Bharosa Cell has made 5,512 calls to seniors — 1,254 to those living alone and 4,258 to those with families. Also, by resolving 45 out of 48 in-person complaints, with 36 settled amicably, the scheme has demonstrated its ability to address concerns ranging from safety issues to emotional support. The Bharosa Cell has intensified its efforts to provide a robust safety net for the elderly. Though launched two decades ago, the initiative gained traction in recent years under the leadership of CP Ravinder Singal, addressing the rising concerns over attacks on vulnerable seniors. Senior inspector Seema Surve, who leads the cell, highlighted the proactive measures in place. "Our all-women five Damini squad conducts regular visits to seniors' homes, offering not just security checks but also counselling to combat loneliness and ensure their immediate needs are catered to," she said. The cell also makes daily calls to 50 seniors to inquire about their well-being. The Bharosa Cell encourages seniors and their families to register for the scheme at the nearest police station or via a convenient QR code system available at stations and senior citizen organisations. For those unable to visit, officers conduct home visits. "Nagpur police's Senior Citizen Assistance Scheme has become a lifeline for the city's elderly, blending regular check-ins, home visits, and swift grievance redressal to create a secure and compassionate environment," said Surve, adding Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy, Addl CP Vasant Pardeshi, and DCP Rahul Maknikar take periodic reviews of the functioning and also make surprise visits to the unit.
