At least 20 killed and 134 people injured in blast at factory in Russia's Ryazan region
MOSCOW - The death toll from an unexplained blast last week at a production facility in Russia's Ryazan region has jumped to at least 20 dead with another 134 people injured, local emergency services said on Aug 18.
Mr Pavel Malkov, governor of the Ryazan region that lies just south-east of Moscow, said on Aug 15 that the incident had been triggered by a fire breaking out inside a workshop at the factory.
But it was unclear from Russian media reports what caused the fire or what exactly the factory was producing. Official Russian sources gave no details beyond efforts to find and treat the injured.
'As of Aug 18, 20 people died as a result of the emergency incident,' the local emergency service headquarters said in a post on Telegram.
'There are 134 injured, of which 31 patients are in hospitals in Ryazan and Moscow, while 103 patients are undergoing outpatient treatment.' REUTERS

Katsina police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu said officers intercepted the attackers and successfully prevented a planned assault on two villages. But while fleeing through Mantau, the attackers opened fire on residents. Several homes were also set ablaze before security forces arrived at the scene, he said. Survivors recounted harrowing scenes of women and girls being dragged away by the assailants. "They started shooting inside the mosque while people were praying," said Muhammad Abdullahi, a resident. US suspends visa processing in Zimbabwe, embassy says

"We have paused routine visa services in Harare while we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe," the embassy said in a post on X. It said the move was not a travel ban and that current visas would remain valid. The government of the Southern African country did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The pause took effect on August 7, according to a notice on the U.S. State Department's website, which said it applied to all visa services with the exception of most diplomatic and official visas. U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has restricted travel from a number of African countries, saying it is working to prevent visa overstaying and misuse. Zimbabwe had a visa overstay rate of 10.57% in 2023, according to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security report. Starting this week, the U.S. will require visa applicants from Zambia and Malawi to pay bonds of up to $15,000 for some visitor visas. Russia says its forces advance in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region

Russian forces said in July they had taken their first village in Dnipropetrovsk. U.S. estimates of the battlefield suggest Russian forces control less than 1% of the region. Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five regions of Ukraine that Russia has claimed as its own territory. Ukraine's battlefield-mapping project DeepState showed that Russian troops were at least 1-2 kilometres from Novoheorhiivka as of Tuesday. There was no public comment from the Ukrainian military. It usually does not comment on Russian claims of incremental territorial gains. "Soldiers of the 57th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade pushed out the enemy from Novoheorhiivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region," Russia's defence ministry said.
