Is Springboks' Rugby Championship title defence already over?

The South African10 hours ago
Before the opening round of the Rugby Championship, the Springboks would have been widely expected to secure a bonus-point victory over the Wallabies at Ellis Park to start their title defence with momentum and confidence.
Instead, the Springboks are reeling from a shock defeat, which also saw them fail to even collect a losing bonus-point. By contrast, the All Blacks secured a full five log points with a big win in Argentina.
The Springboks now simply have to bounce back in their 'rematch' against Australia this weekend, but even if they can achieve this, they will then need to navigate extremely challenging fixtures against arch-rivals New Zealand.
Besides the improvements the All Blacks have made over the last year, they will also be excited by the prospect of facing the Springboks at their home fortresses in Auckland and Wellington.
From there, the Springboks will welcome Argentina to Durban before finishing the tournament against the same opposition in London, where this neutral venue could add an air of unpredictability to proceedings.
All in all, it looks set to be extremely difficult for the Springboks to get their Rugby Championship campaign back on track, with even one more defeat almost certain to bring an end to any hope of a title defence.
'We still want to win the Rugby Championship,' prop Ox Nche insisted. 'Next weekend is a must-win Test (against Australia in Cape Town), and we have to get as many points as we can.' REMINDER OF THE REMAINING SCHEDULE FOR 2025: 23 August: vs Australia, Cape Town. Kick off: 17:10 .
. 6 September: vs New Zealand, Auckland. Kick off: 09:05 .
. 13 September: vs New Zealand, Wellington. Kick off: 09:05 .

Who will replace four injured Springboks?

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that captain Siya Kolisi, wing Kurt-Lee Arendse, loose forward Pieter-Steph du Toit, and wing Edwill van der Merwe have all been ruled out of this Saturday's Test against the Wallabies. Kolisi faces the lengthiest period on the sidelines, and will be unavailable for three to four weeks, while the other trio will hope to be back in time for the games against the All Blacks in September. Siya Kolisi The curse of the No 8 position continues after Kolisi picked up a knee injury against the All Blacks. Erasmus could now turn to Jean-Luc du Preez or Kwagga Smith, but the most likely scenario will probably see Cobus Wiese receive another shot at eighthman. A bolter could be Evan Roos, but there is no sign that a call up is on the cards. Edwill van der Merwe With Cheslin Kolbe returning from injury, there will be a straight switch after Van der Merwe picked up yet another unfortunate injury in Springbok colours. Kurt-Lee Arendse It's a little bit trickier on the left wing, where there is not that much specialist back up. Kolbe may need to do a job in the No 11 jersey, allowing Ethan Hooker or Canan Moodie to take up the other spot on the wing in the absence of Arendse. Pieter-Steph du Toit The big man is virtually irreplaceable at blindside flank, and it adds to the conundrum when it comes to the back row balance. Du Preez and Smith both have enough versatility to fill in here, but it would not be a surprise in the slightest to see utility forward Franco Mostert shift into the No 7 jersey again. Springboks suffer injury blows before second Test against Australia

As if the pain of a first defeat to Australia at Ellis Park in 62 years was not enough, South Africa face a heavy injury toll from the 38-22 defeat in Saturday's Rugby Championship opener with captain Siya Kolisi sidelined for an extended period. Kolisi suffered a knee injury as Australia rallied from 22 points down in a stunning second-half display and is out of the second Test in Cape Town on Saturday and probably the two-match tour to New Zealand that follows. Kolisi is expected to be out for four weeks, which means he will miss the Springboks' eagerly anticipated clash with New Zealand at Eden Park on September 6, where they are seeking a first win since 1937. Loose-forward Pieter-Steph du Toit suffered a concussion in the weekend defeat and will also miss the second game as he goes through return-to-play protocols.

Will Dricus du Plessis get a rematch? coach responds

Dricus du Plessis' coach, Morne Visser, has commented on whether the South African fighter will receive a rematch after losing his title to Khamzat Chimaev. Du Plessis was dominated by the Russian fighter at UFC 319 in Chicago on Saturday night. Chimaev landed an impressive 529 strikes during the match, winning the UFC Middleweight title by unanimous decision. Although du Plessis has lost the title, he is not guaranteed an immediate rematch. However, it is common for champions who lose closely contested matches to be granted another opportunity at the title. Du Plessis' coach Morne Visser, has reacted to the fighter's first defeat as UFC Middleweight champion. 'It's hard to take a big loss like this on the jaw, but lessons learned,' Visser said. 'I think we could have done a lot better, but I also think the ref should have done better. You know what it's like when you lose or something doesn't go your way, you always wanna blame somebody else. But I do think the ref should have made that fight a lot more live or a little bit more live.' Visser has admitted that 'DDP' will not be fighting the Russian champion anytime soon. 'There's no way I'll take a rematch with us being a little bit behind in our Russian style of wrestling,' Visser told Submission Radio . 'That is what it is. Nothing else. He just knows how to control you on the floor … keeping the fight on the floor and making sure that the ref doesn't stand it up. That's all he did. Nothing else. We had more submission attempts and almost success. And, obviously, the stand up, we dominated him.' With Dricus Du Plessis not getting a rematch soon, it remains to be seen who Khamzat will fight next. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
