MCMC investigates influencer for allegedly spreading false claims about royal institution
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is conducting an investigation against a social media influencer over the alleged dissemination of false information involving the Royal Institution.
According to MCMC, two sessions of recording statements and further investigation involving the individual were carried out at MCMC's headquarters in Cyberjaya on Friday and today, following public complaints received under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.
'Initial investigations found that the content linked to the influencer involved the dissemination of false information linking the Royal Institution with baseless allegations.
'There were also attempts to disclose personal information without consent, with the intent to annoy, harass, threaten, or disturb any person,' the statement read.
The statement further noted that such actions could potentially cause public unrest, incite slander, pose threats to the safety of the individuals involved, and violate communication laws and personal data protection.
MCMC stressed that all complaints would be investigated in accordance with the law, regardless of an individual's status, popularity or influence.
'Every investigation is conducted professionally, based on fair procedures and in accordance with the legal provisions under the CMA 1998, and serves as an initial step to gather related information,' MCMC said.
At the same time, the public was reminded that any dissemination of content touching on 3R issues (Religion, Race, and Royalty) that is threatening, harassing, or intrusive of individual privacy is a serious offence and can result in action under the existing provisions. — Bernama

Civil servant loses RM13,000 to scammers
KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant lost RM13,000 in savings after he was believed to have been scammed by imposters. The victim, who is in his 30s, was said to have received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and later, a policeman for spreading fake news on investments, job offers and gambling. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the victim allegedly got the calls on May 27, first from someone claiming to be an MCMC officer. 'The caller claimed that his (victim) phone number was involved in the dissemination of fake messages, and then the call was allegedly reconnected to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Perak police headquarters,' he said. After speaking for quite some time, the man was ordered to transfer RM13,000 to a bank account belonging to one Muhammad Azlan, for 'account protection', he said. Supt Mursalin said the victim was also instructed to update photos and personal details every three hours to the 'cop' as a way of reporting himself to the police. 'Later, the victim realised that he had been cheated and lodged a report at the Ranau police station on Tuesday night,' he said. Supt Mursalin said this case is now being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. He urged the public to keep calm and think rationally when receiving such calls from unknown persons or numbers to avoid getting scammed. He also warned against revealing any personal, banking or identification information through the phone, and to not carry out any monetary transactions online or via telephone. 'Always call back the police station or agencies allegedly involved on their official land-lines to verify any calls or matters,' said Supt Mursalin.

The alleged 'paedophile' group has 12,000 members when Mekyun was alerted about the group. Someone also uploaded a picture of Mekyun in her school uniform in the group and she was disgusted by the lewd comments about her and the other children. The comments were allegedly made by men who could be fathers and uncles. Mekyun said what the men did was a crime and not funny. She said to her followers that they must take collective action together to speak up for these children. She implored her followers to report the particular Facebook group and share her video to spread awareness. She hoped the police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications, could investigate and take action against the group. A Twitter user said they would go into similar groups to report the members to their wives with screenshot evidence of their husbands' comments. Meanwhile, others believe the offenders should be publicly named to deter future incidents. They hoped the authorities could trace these people and take action against them.
