Next hearing in Mathura case on July 4
Prayagraj: In the matter of Krishna Janmabhumi-Shahi Eidgah dispute, Allahabad High Court on Friday fixed July 4 as next date of hearing.
The controversy is related to Mughal era Shahi Eidgah mosque in Mathura which is alleged to have been built after demolishing a temple at Lord Krishna's birthplace.
Justice Ram Manohar Narain Mishra is hearing 18 suits filed by Hindu side, seeking possession of land, removal of the eidgah structure, restoration of temple and a permanent injunction.
On Friday counsels for Hindu side argued on application in which prayer was made that Shahi-Eidgah be mentioned as 'disputed structure'.
On August 1, 2024, the HC had rejected applications of Muslim side challenging maintainability of suits of Hindu worshippers and held that all suits of Hindu worshippers were maintainable. The court held that these suits were not barred by Limitation Act, Waqf Act and Places of Worship Act1991, which prohibit conversion of religious structure as existed on August, 15,1947.

Assam govt orders shoot-on-sight order to quell communal tension in Dhubri
1 2 Guwahati: Faced with communal tension in border town Dhubri and provocative posters on integration of Dhubri district with Bangladesh appearing, the Assam govt on Friday issued shoot-at- sight orders. The govt is also rushing in Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF personnel in the district after mob clashes ensued over objectionable objects being found near a place of worship. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who visited the district on Friday said that at least three posters were retrieved by police at Dhubri which were pasted at various locations by one organization "Nabin Bangla." "Since last one week the law and order at Dhubri has been challenging. A communal group is trying to create disturbances which the government will not tolerate," Sarma said. Sarma later posted on X, "I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow zero tolerance against elements who desecrate….." places of worship. "In Dhubri, a particular group has become active with the intent to damage our temples. We have issued SHOOT AT SIGHT ORDERS," Himanta wrote. A day after Bakrid on June 7, an animal part was found in front of a place of worship, following which both Hindus and Muslims appealed for peace and harmony. The next day again the incident was repeated, and stones were thrown at night, Sarma added. Sarma said that for Bakrid, thousands of cattle were brought from West Bengal by a 'new beef mafia' in Dhubri. "I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,' Sarma said. He said that next year, he will be present at Dhubri on the day of Eid and stay the next day as well. "We are fully committed to ensure enforcement of law and order in the district and defeat all communal forces," he added. Dhubri district has the highest Muslim population in the entire state constituting 90 percent of the district's total population, majority of whom are believed to be of Bangladeshi origin. HC tells CBSE to rectify student records by updating official DoB
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has emphasised the "presumption of correctness" attached to official birth certificates and directed the Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE ) to amend a student's academic records accordingly. A division bench comprising Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish V Shankar, in a recent order, underlined the "imminent need" to ensure consistency across official documents. This, the court said, not only affirms the accuracy of personal details in public records but also protects a citizen's identity—of which the date of birth is a crucial component. "A citizen of this country is entitled to a true and correct narration of all necessary and relevant particulars in the public documents that pertain to them. CBSE is a record keeper of considerable importance," the court observed, while dismissing CBSE's appeal against a single judge's order to correct the date of birth in certificates issued in 1999. The bench noted that documents like official birth certifiscates, issued by a competent authority, carry a statutory presumption of correctness under Indian law. The court reiterated that the matriculation certificate is widely regarded as "unassailable proof of date of birth", and citizens are entitled to have all public documents reflect accurate and consistent information. The plea before the court involved a student seeking rectification of her date of birth in CBSE records based on a birth certificate issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The HC noted that the genuineness of the birth certificate had not been disputed. It also observed that discrepancies between CBSE record and other official documents such as the individual's passport could cause serious complications, including for employment or immigration. In its defense, CBSE argued that the request for correction was filed beyond the time limit prescribed under its examination bye-laws, and that it no longer retained relevant records more than a decade later. However, the single judge had earlier ruled that the incorrect date of birth in the CBSE records appeared to result from a genuine mistake—not a clerical or typographical error. Trichy streets want to let go caste identities
Trichy: In what is seen as a drawback for a city known for its secular fabric, at least 30 prominent roads and streets in Trichy continue to bear caste and communal identities. While a few of them with neutral names were recently renamed by Trichy corporation to honour renowned personalities from the city, there are demands to rename streets with caste and communal names on priority and avoid getting stereotyped. Known for its pluralism, Trichy has elected candidates of non-dominant castes and religions as well as non-natives in assembly and parliament elections. However, the city with 65 wards and around 20 to 122 streets per ward, has at least 30 major streets and roads bearing caste names. Some of these include Kalla streets, Kura street, Arunthathiyar nagar, Vellala street, Muslim streets, Palla street, and Saurashtra streets. While there is no major opposition from residents to street names with backward or forward class names, those from streets bearing SC/ST names are uneasy. "A century ago, streets were named based on the dominant caste of the residents, but that is a thing of the past. Caste-based streets can be renamed after deserving national and state leaders," K Suresh, councillor, ward 23 said.
