Farmers association seeks revival of issuance of manual patta documents
Addressing the media at Mannargudi on Saturday, July 19, after chairing a meeting of State and District-level office-bearers of the association, its general secretary P. R. Pandian said the VAOs, of late, refused to issue 'chita' documents manually citing an instruction from the Revenue Administration and Disaster Management Department's circular that 'chita' documents should be obtained online only.
The instruction directly impacted the tenant farmers as it would not be possible to obtain the 'chita' in their name, particularly those entered into lease agreement with temples and trusts, whereas the 'chita' document was a vital document to avail insurance cover for the crops and measuring of the same after harvest. Hence, the association sought revival of manual issuance of 'chita' by VAOs, he added.
The issuance of 'Uzhavar Attai' (identification cards for farmers) had also been suspended. Already, non-issuance of 'Uzhavar Attai' to the tenant farmers had kept them away from availing benefits extended to the farming community through various welfare schemes implemented for its uplift.
The State government should initiate steps to make tenant farmers also eligible to avail the welfare assistance by announcing that a certificate from VAO would be suffice to avail the benefits.

Brewers beat Pirates to win 12th straight game, trigger rare free burgers promotion from George Webb
Free burgers are back in Milwaukee. The Brewers won their 12th straight game on Wednesday afternoon when they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-5 at American Family Field. That automatically triggered a gimmick that has been around in Milwaukee since the 1940s and earned local residents a free burger from George Webb. 'I was nervous,' pitcher Brandon Woodruff said, via The Associated Press. 'There was a little more at stake today. I wanted those burgers bad. Who doesn't want a free burger?' The George Webb promotion started back decades ago, first with a 17-game win streak offer. But when the Braves joined the major leagues in 1953, the promotion dropped to 13. The Brewers, after moving in from Seattle, then opened the 1987 season with 13 straight wins. That led to more than 170,000 burgers being handed out. Though the promotion dates back decades, this is the first time that the Brewers have won 12 games in a row since 2018 and just the third time in history. They came close a couple of times earlier this season with an eight-game run early on and then an 11-game tear that went through the All-Star break. The Brewers ended up losing to the Seattle Mariners to snap that streak, however, and had to start again. This current win streak dates back to Aug. 1, when they beat the Washington Nationals 16-9. That led to sweeps of the Nationals, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and most recently the Pirates. The Brewers now sit at 76-44 and hold a 7.5-game lead in the NL Central race. While the Brewers certainly have bigger aspirations, including making it out of the opening round of the playoffs after failing to do so the past two years, free burgers for the city is an incredible start to this last stretch of the season.

Joe Ryan throws 6 2/3 innings in Twins' 4-1 victory over the Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Ryan allowed a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the Yankees 4-1 on Wednesday night, breaking a nine-game losing streak to New York. Ryan (12-5) allowed only a homer to Cody Bellinger in the game that was delayed at the start for 1 hour, 52, minutes because of rain. The right-hander struck out seven, walked two and threw his hardest pitch of the season when he struck out Aaron Judge on a 97.7 mph fastball in the first. After Bellinger homered, Ryan struck out the next four hitters and allowed two baserunners the rest of the way. Kody Clemens hit a two-run double and Royce Lewis added an RBI double in Minnesota's three-run sixth off Yerry De Los Santos (0-1) and Mark Leiter Jr. Rookie Luke Keaschall had an RBI groundout as the Twins beat the Yankees for the first time since April 26, 2023. Minnesota ended its skid to New York after executive chair Joe Pohlad announced his family will remain the principal owner and add two new investment groups instead. Kody Funderburk struck out Austin Wells to end the seventh, and Justin Topa had a six-out save to finish the five-hitter. New York rookie Cam Schlitter allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. The hard-throwing righty retired the first nine hitters until Trevor Larnach walked ahead of a double by Byron Buxton. Key Moment Infield hits by Buxton and Keaschall started Minnesota's rally. Clemens followed with a two-strike double, took third when center fielder Trent Grisham bobbled the ball and scored on the Lewis double. Key Stat Clemens was hitless in his previous 18 at-bats before his double. Up Next Minnesota RHP Bailey Ober (4-7, 5.16 ERA) opposes Detroit RHP Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.35) at home Thursday night. New York RHP Luis Gil (0-1, 7.27) opposes RHP Andre Pallante (6-9, 4.95) in the opener of a three-game series at St. Louis on Friday night. ___ AP MLB:
