EU Commission Becomes Official Partner of 2025 AFCON in Morocco
The agreement was signed on Sunday in Cairo by CAF President Patrice Motsepe and European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela.
Under this partnership, the European Commission will support the men's AFCON, scheduled in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, as well as the Women's AFCON, set to take place from July 5 to July 26 this year. The partnership also includes support for the African Schools Football Championship.
Motsepe described the partnership as a 'recognition of the significant progress that has been made in CAF and the respect that emanates from the governance, ethics, and transparency policies that we have introduced, as well as our zero tolerance of corruption.'
He added that the partnership with the European Commission reflects the shared commitment to developing African football and 'the expansion of the cultural, trade and investment relationships between our two continents.'
Meanwhile, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the strong bond between Africa and Europe, saying that they are 'partners of choice.'
For the commission, 'this partnership is about creating bonds, about empowering young people, local communities, and entire regions. Sport and football are part of it,' Leyen said.
The cooperation will focus on creating new opportunities, including new jobs, a quality health system, improved public services, and new partnerships.
A key element of this agreement, Síkela says, is the support for the CAF African Schools Championship, which will reach up to 33,000 schools across Africa. Tags: afconCAFEuropean CommissionMorocco

Benjdida Joins Maghreb de Fes After Belgian Spell
Maghreb de Fes have completed the signing of striker Soufiane Benjdida as they continue to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window. The Moroccan club confirmed the move on Wednesday, announcing that Benjdida has signed a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season. The 23-year-old joins from Belgian side RWD Molenbeek, where he played last season after a spell at Standard Liège. Benjdida is no stranger to Moroccan football, having previously featured in the Botola Pro with Raja Casablanca, where he built his reputation before moving abroad. Across the 2023/24 season, he made 25 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing one assist. In the last 2024/25 campaign, he has featured in 26 games, scoring three times and adding one assist. Maghreb de Fes hope his experience at both the Botola Pro and European level, combined with his steady scoring record, will bolster their attack ahead of the new campaign. El Khannouss Nears Crystal Palace Move
Leicester City midfielder Bilal El Khannouss is nearing a move to Crystal Palace, with a deal worth around $41m close to being agreed, according to Sky Sports. The 21-year-old has told Leicester of his desire to join Palace, who see him as a potential replacement for Eberechi Eze. Talks are progressing and there is broad agreement on the fee, but Palace are still weighing up their options before committing. Leicester, relegated last season, continue to operate under financial strain. They have already lost goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to West Ham this summer and could see further departures before the window closes. El Khannouss has been one of the few positives in a difficult period for the Foxes. He has played all three games this season across competitions, providing two assists in the opening-day win over Sheffield Wednesday. Palace are also monitoring Southampton's Tyler Dibling, but the 18-year-old would cost in excess of $58m, making El Khannouss a more realistic option. The Belgian-born Moroccan has been widely expected to leave Leicester following their relegation, and a move to Selhurst Park could offer him the prospect of European football. El Khannouss remains under contract at Leicester, but a switch to Palace would end a long-running transfer saga and bring much-needed funds to the Championship club. Japan reaffirms stance on Polisario at TICAD 9 in Yokohama
During the opening session of the ministerial meeting at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) on Tuesday in Yokohama, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya reaffirmed Japan's official stance on the Polisario issue. «I wish to clarify that the presence in this meeting of any entity that Japan does not recognize as a state does not in any way affect Japan's position regarding the status of this entity», Iwaya declared, addressing the African ministers and representatives from international organizations present at the conference. This decisive statement is consistent with Japan's previous positions, reiterated during senior officials' meetings and in public declarations by the country's top diplomat. Japan, firmly committed to international legitimacy, aims to eliminate any ambiguity, stressing that the participation of the separatist entity in meetings held under the African Union (AU) banner does not confer any state legitimacy upon it. This position aligns with that of the United Nations and the vast majority of its member states, who do not recognize the separatist entity and largely endorse the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007. TICAD 9 is being held in Yokohama, Japan, from August 19 to 23, focusing on fostering development and cooperation in Africa within a framework of peace and stability.
