Lourdes secures return to state over McCarthy; Heritage, Aquinas, Cypress Bay advance
With the bitter memory of a rare regional final loss a year ago on the very same field, the Lourdes Academy girls soccer team was not about to let history repeat itself on Wednesday night.
The Bobcats, after suffering a 3-1 upset loss to St. Thomas Aquinas a year ago in the same round did not let it happen this time as they pulled out a 1-0 overtime win over Archbishop McCarthy in a Region 4-5A final at Columbus High School.
Lourdes (15-1-3) is now headed back to the place its become quite accustomed to - the state final four. The Bobcats, who went to seven of them in an eight-year span from 2016-2023, will enter as the No. 1 seed and take on No. 4 Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek in a 5A state semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
'Last year honestly was a shock for us but at the same time it was a reality check for us,' Lourdes coach David Fique said. 'As a program, we have now worked our way up to where you are expected to make it to state which is nice but it's a challenge to do it every year. The girls knew they were going to need to play well tonight to get this done because McCarthy is a tough opponent.. We're excited to be back at state.'
The game-winner for Lourdes came off the foot of freshman Gianna Gray four minutes into the first 10 minute overtime period and then the Bobcats put on a brilliant display of possession keep-away on the Mavericks, limiting them to virtually not offensive chances the rest of the way.
'Everything happened so fast, it's still a blur for me right now,' said Gray, who had just gotten the water cooler bath from her teammates. 'What a moment to get a goal like that. I love my teammates and am so glad I was able to help them tonight.'
Bobcat players suffered through a frustrating scoreless 80 minutes of regulation as they more or less dominated possession and scoring chances but simply could not get the ball past McCarthy freshman goalkeeper Mikaela Bishop who was brilliant in front of the net making numerous quality saves.
'We're not even playing in overtime if it wasn't for Mikaela,' said McCarthy coach Mike Sica bluntly. 'She was simply outstanding out on that field and kept us in the game.'
Now the Bobcats will not head north hoping to capture another state title. Despite all the trips to state, winning it all has eluded them since 2020 when they won their second championship in a three-year span having also won it in 2018.
'We remembered what an empty feeling it was on this same field last year and have been determined all season long to right that wrong,' senior co-captain Mia Roca said. 'It took a lot out of us but we knew that we could do it because of how much of our team is not just a team but it's a family and I really felt that's what got us through tonight. Now it's time to go up there and bring the trophy home.'
HERITAGE CHASING MULTIPLE TITLES
American Heritage's quest for both its third consecutive state title and a national title rolled on with another lopsided win on Wednesday night.
Led by a pair of goals and an assist from Sami Villaverde, the Patriots (17-1) cruised past Somerset Academy 4-0 on their home field in the Region 4-4A final.
American Heritage advances to state for the third consecutive year and will take on Lemon Bay on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a Class 4A state semifinal at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
Senior Jordyn Norwood and freshman Mattie Hall also scored goals for Heritage, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps.
Senior Courtney Caruso, freshman Mia Sommers and junior Allison Aleman each had an assist as well. Senior Jillian Miliffe recorded the shutout.
Somerset Academy finishes 16-6.
AQUINAS RETURNS TO STATE
St. Thomas Aquinas is also ranked among the nation's best and continues to demonstrate why as it did during a 6-0 rout of Cooper City on its home field on Wednesday night in the Region 4-6A final.
The Raiders (18-1-3), who are ranked No. 6 nationally by MaxPreps, advanced to the Class 6A semifinals to take on Bradenton Lakewood Ranch at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
Aquinas owns the most state championships in state history with 15, but has not added to that total since 2017. The Raiders advanced to the state final four for the second consecutive season.
Bianca Raskin led Aquinas with two first-half goals while Marisa Robinson and Brooklyn Burbridge each scored also in the first 40 minutes.
Sophie Barnes and Madison McKeon each scored in the second half. Cooper City finishes the season 16-4-1.
CYPRESS BAY AVENGES LOSS
A year after having its streak of five consecutive trips to the state final four snapped by Douglas in the regional finals, Cypress Bay secured some payback with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles in Weston.
The Lightning (17-1-1), ranked No. 8 nationally by MaxPreps, advanced to the Class 7A state semifinals as the top seed, and they will take on Jupiter on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale. Douglas finishes the season 12-2-6.

Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Called Out in Brutally Honest Breakdown
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. J.J. McCarthy is set to take over as the franchise quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. He will take over after Sam Darnold left town in NFL free agency and after the Vikings chose not to pursue another quarterback like Aaron Rodgers on a short-term deal. Behind McCarthy, Minnesota has Sam Howell and Brett Rypien as their next best options. The job is clearly McCarthy's to lose. While the talent and potential is clearly there for the Vikings' young quarterback, there are a lot of questions about him. He has not taken a single NFL regular snap, as he missed all of last season due to a knee injury suffered in the preseason. J.J. Read more: Vikings Coach Breaks Silence on JJ McCarthy's Progress Colin Cowherd spoke out during a segment of his show, "The Herd," and provided his opinion on the second-year quarterback. He's clearly not sold on the Minnesota signal caller. "There's so much mystery here. Why does Minnesota keep flirting with other quarterbacks? And there are too many conflicting reports on McCarthy," Cowherd said. "I feel like sometimes there's a bit of a spin job here. His arm and escapeability are modest. His release wasn't super quick. There's no great trait." Plenty of rumors have come out about the Vikings having potential interest in other quarterbacks. Howell was obviously acquired during the 2025 NFL Draft. Rodgers was connected to the team earlier in the offseason and Kirk Cousins has come up as a possible option as well. Despite the rumors of potential interest in outside quarterback options, McCarthy is still penciled in as the starter. Minnesota has opted to stick with its current quarterback room. Read more: Aaron Rodgers Reveals What Really Happened With Steelers Talks McCarthy has a lot of doubters to prove wrong and a lot of critics to silence. He will have every opportunity to do so throughout the upcoming 2025 NFL season. On a positive note for the young quarterback, he will have Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, among others, to throw to in his first season as the starter. Aaron Jones will also be a weapon for him to utilize and will take pressure off of the passing game with his running ability. It will be interesting to see what kind of season McCarthy can put together. A lot of pressure is on his shoulders, but he's talented enough to handle that pressure and come through with a big season to prove the Vikings right for believing in him. Confirmed: Vikings Chose JJ McCarthy Over Aaron Rodgers
All eyes have been on JJ McCarthy, during the 2025 Minnesota Vikings offseason, which is now shifting to minicamp, scheduled to start on Tuesday. Today, however the Vikings are holding their annual media day, of which their redshirt rookie starting quarterback is front and center. Many of us have a lot of belief in JJ McCarthy, just given what head coach Kevin O'Connell, GM Kwesi adofo-Mensah have said publicly, along with what media insiders and the MN Vikings social media team have fed us through legacy and social medias. Now that the Vikings have chosen McCarthy as their QB1, anything coming out of Eagan has to be taken with a large grain of salt. Everyone inside of Minnesota Vikings facilities, from ownership to executives to coaches and all the way down to the players have a lot invested into the success of JJ McCarthy. How do we know the Minnesota Vikings love JJ McCarthy… The most telling insight into the Minnesota Vikings' heat check on JJ McCarthy's NFL readiness came back in March, when Daniel Jones turned down their $15 million offer because he knew the likelihood of winning the job over McCarthy wasn't good. Advertisement It was around that same time, however, that we really found out how Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings felt about McCarthy, when Aaron Rodgers called them up and all but threw himself at the organization for one shot at a Super Bowl run with his old pal from Cal, KOC. Credit: Shaun Brooks-Imagn Images After a week or two of internal debate over the pros and cons of bringing the 4x MVP in, the MN Vikings gave Rodgers the 'don't wait up for us' treatment. But he waited up anyway… for months. Related: MN Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Reminds TJ Hockenson of Who…? Meanwhile, KOC's confidence in McCarthy seems to have grown now that OTAs have mostly come and gone. Thus, it was no coincidence Rodgers gave up on his waiting game and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, just days before teams started to meet this week for minicamp. Confirmed: Vikings picked McCarthy over Aaron Rodgers Then on Monday, Mike Jones (The Athletic) confirmed what we pretty much already knew in an article that put in tinto plain words. The Minnesota Vikings did indeed spurn Aaron Rodgers' advances, a decision that was probably etched into stone over the last couple weeks, leading to A-Rodg signing in Pittsburgh. The Minnesota Vikings have pledged loyalty to McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick, who missed his entire rookie season while rehabbing from a torn meniscus suffered during the preseason. Rodgers wanted to continue his career with the Vikings, but after extensive deliberations, Minnesota opted to proceed with McCarthy as its quarterback. The Michigan product has spent these offseason practices working his way back into a flow and, thus far, has impressed teammates with his leadership skills. McCarthy hasn't been perfect, but coach Kevin O'Connell dismissed any McCarthy hiccups, calling this the learning stage. If McCarthy emerges from the offseason unscathed, he should remain the starter for Week 1. Mike Jones – The Athletic Advertisement I know Rodgers isn't what he used to be, but the Minnesota Vikings choosing what seems like 'the unknown' over an O'Connell-aided Aaron Rodgers revenge tour is pretty significant, given how easy the Vikings could have made Rodgers' life. And not just because of KOC and his genius or longtime friendship with Rodgers, but also how much the Vikings did to beef up everything around the QB position this offseason, especially on the interior offensive line. Doubt JJ McCarthy at your own risk… Media and fans can apply pressure, but as long as JJ McCarthy is making a positive impression on coaches and teammates while they are all gathered together, none of the outside noise will matter. Advertisement And if you believe what the Minnesota Vikings propaganda machine has been dishing out for the past few months (I do), then optimism over their QB position is at an all-time high in Eagan. For as much faith as some of us have in our 22-year-old University of Michigan superstar, football is a game of results. And so far, when it comes to the National Football League, JJ has zero evidence to show he belongs. That's why, until we see McCarthy take the regular season field and perform in games that matter, we'll only be able to guess at what his play will look like, even if some of those guesses are well-educated. Advertisement Still, some forms of information aren't more revealing than others… and that is where their handling of Rodgers and other QB options this offseason is worth noting. I mean, the Minnesota Vikings have left their QB room virtually void of legitimate starting quarterbacks, outside of McCarthy. Justin Jefferson telling us how MN Vikings feel about McCarthy too Another big hint is the way Justin Jefferson has made it a mission to build up his relationship with the 2024 No. 10 overall draft pick. The two have lockers right next to each other, have been spotted at local sporting events, among other things. Jefferson's dedication to the bit tells us everything we need to know about what the Vikings have been communicating to their superstar wideout. That McCarthy is the present and future of this team. Not only that, but JJ will make or break whether or not JJ goes to the Hall of Fame… and that conversation goes both ways. Advertisement Related: Justin Jefferson Reveals Why He Attended Minnesota Vikings OTAs Not only do the Vikings not want to sew doubt in the hearts and minds of fans, but you know that O'Connell and his group of QB guru coaches in training have full belief in themselves to fix any sort of shortcomings JJ McCarthy currently has by the time training camp rolls around. Now that we know without a doubt that the Minnesota Vikings chose JJ McCarthy over Aaron Rodgers, it adds even more pressure on the young man's plate to perform well immediately. But it also gives us our biggest indicator into just how good Kevin O'Connell and the rest inside that organization feel about him doing just that. Related Headlines

Recently Cleared JJ McCarthy Claps Back at Arm Strength Criticism
The Minnesota Vikings are working through their last day of 2025 mandatory minicamp on Thursday. Next week, from June 16-18, they'll hold one more voluntary OTA session, then take a month or so off before reconvening in Eagan for training camp in late July. So this afternoon, after hearing from some of the assistant coaches and secondary star players on Wednesday, all of the most popular interview requests showed up to the podium, including Kevin O'Connell, Justin Jefferson and JJ McCarthy. JJ McCarthy fully cleared by Minnesota Vikings medical staff McCarthy started off his presser by confirming that, on day one of minicamp Tuesday, Minnesota Vikings doctors and trainers declared him 100% healthy and fully-cleared him for any and all football activities, going forward. Advertisement That's huge news for a team and fanbase that, not so long ago, was concerned about whether or not he would be ready for training camp. For the most part this spring, the chatter surrounding McCarthy's recovery and restarted development has been positive. Just 4-5 months ago, after JJ showed up on the Minnesota Vikings sideline late in the 2024 season looking skinnier than Kyle (DJ Qualls) from Road Trip, that was definitely not the case. But a couple months after Vikings Twitter went into a panic over how JJ McCarthy would put weight back on in time for the start of offseason programs, he showed up at an NFL golf event and put those worries to bed. Advertisement Ever since then, anyone who have been around McCarthy or have watched him participate in-person this offseason have not relayed a single negative thing about the 22-year-old redshirt rookie that local reporters like Darren Wolfson (SKOR North) have been able to write/talk about and receive all sorts of engagement from. It just doesn't exist. 'I've not heard one bad thing about J.J McCarthy. You think about him leading IMG Academy to a national championship in high school, helping Michigan win a national championship in college. The two, like it's not a coincidence, put it that way. There is something about JJ McCarthy, however you want to define 'It Factor', JJ has it.' Darren Wolfson – SKOR North Of course, the same cannot be said for McCarthy, when it comes to some of the national talking heads watching the MN Vikings offseason from afar. Like Colin Cowherd (FOX Sorts), who apparently have different sources telling them a much more clouded story on McCarthy. On his show 'The Herd' Wednesday, Cowherd took aim at the Minnesota Vikings franchise quarterback (yet again), telling his viewers that 'scouts he trusts' have relayed to him that JJ has ZERO special QB traits and on 'moderate arm talent'. You can read more about Colin's latest McCarthy rant HERE. MN Vikings QB responds to criticism regarding his arm strength Naturally, when he talked to reporters today, JJ McCarthy was asked about his arm strength and why there is a misconception out there that he only has a 'moderate' arm, a supposed weakness that the man asking him the question (Judd Zulgad – SKOR North) admitted he has not during the five McCarthy practices he has watched this offseason. Advertisement McCarthy laughed and told those gathered that he thinks the 'stigma' comes from the fact that he played at Michigan, where they didn't throw the ball as much. JJ then went on to mention his smaller frame. Judd: 'When you go back and look at your scouting reports from credible sources that you didn't have arm strength or that it was only 'ok', where do you think that started or how surprised were you? After watching you for five practices there might be some [weaknesses] I see, but it ain't arm strength.' McCarthy: 'I would say a lot of it comes with the stigma of playing at Michigan and not throwing the ball a lot. At the same time, it could be my frame. They don't see the 6'5″, 240 lb guy so how can he throw [the football] 60 MPH at the combine but at the end of the day, it's going to show up and the people that know, know. But yeah, I think the situations that I've been in and I don't pass the eye test for some people.' JJ McCarthy press conference – Day 3 of Mandatory Minicamp (2025) But really — and you can be the judge for yourself after watching the video above — I'm convinced that the 6'1, 220 pound 'undersized' McCarthy only used his supposed lack of size so that he could casually remind us that he threw 61 MPH at the 2024 combine. How fast is that? Well, it was good enough for second-hardest at the 2024 combine, behind only Joe Milton III's 62 MPH football fastball, a rocket that tied Josh Allen for the hardest throw an any combine, ever. The best part about JJ's sick brag was that he weaved it in so casually that it actually undersold the significance. Advertisement Like a lawyer tossing out his case-breaking evidence so nonchalantly that the courtroom is left wondering if they actually heard correctly. McCarthy then closed his answer to Judd's question perfectly by reminding him, 'the people that know, know'. Those who have followed Minnesota Sports Fan for years (I appreciate you), you know in my deep belief in a superstar needing some sort of 'it' factor. They don't have to be Tom Brady, Brett Favre or Kobe Bryant, but your best player can't be Karl-Anthony Towns or Russell Wilson either. Confirmed: JJ McCarthy is a real one Most humans can smell someone who is faking it or pretending to be something they are not from a million miles away. To this day, we still aren't sure who KAT is or how how he really talks, naturally. In fact, I'm not really sure he does. Advertisement Then, to stick with the local basketball analogies, someone like Anthony Edwards walks through the door, who is so real and so much himself that it actually costs him hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines every season because he just can't turn off his 'real' switch, even with a microphone in his face. Without a doubt, I have already been convinced that — no matter what kind of quarterback JJ McCarthy becomes — he absolutely has the 'it' factor necessary to lead an NFL football team. And believe it or not, that is a big test for young QBs expected to come into the league and make a difference for their new team. Related: Minnesota Vikings Officially Promote Two Top Executives Yes, JJ is a nice, polite kid. That will earn him some brownie points with media and fans. But in the locker room, none of that matters. What matters is that you are respectful to your teammates and that you are 100% authentically yourself, something that does not come naturally for everyone, but does for JJ McCarthy. Because anyone who has ever been a part of a team — whether it be on the football field, basketball court, theater show, school classroom or business office — knows the difference between a leader who is faking it and one who you would run through a brick wall for. And no doubt, JJ McCarthy is the latter, something his teammates long ago picked up on. Advertisement Related Headlines
