June 2 recognized as Sock Out Cancer Day in New York
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A charity, known for its brightly colored socks, is being celebrated across the state as it prepares for a couple of major fundraisers. Sock Out Cancer held a news conference on Friday, announcing this Sunday as Sock Out Cancer Day in New York. The organization was founded to support cancer patients with funds to cover non-medical expenses while they are battling the disease. It raises money through the sale of rainbow-colored socks, with each color representing a different type of cancer, as well as significant fundraising events throughout the year. The money is then given to the foundations of UHS, Lourdes, and Golisano Children's Hospital for distribution to their patients in need. Chairman of the Board at Security Mutual Life Insurance, Bruce Boyea, says that the effort has had a lasting impact. 'The stories that I've heard bring tears to your eyes, really. Of people who have to work, and everybody has to work, but sometimes they work to get the money, they put off the treatment which is about the worst thing that you can do for cancer. And that's why we created Sock Out Cancer,' said Boyea. The charity announced its annual concert and partnership with the Dick's Open. The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones tribute bands battle will take place on Saturday, October 18, with all ticket sales going to the organization. And it's bringing back Birdies for Cancer, where donors can pledge for every birdie made at the Dick's Open golf tournament with Security Mutual providing an additional 10 percent match. Brits forced into HUGE queues at Spain airport fearing kids would ‘suffocate' in lines so big planes couldn't disembark
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HUNDREDS of Brit tourists have been trapped like cattle in "inhuman" conditions at a Spanish airport - forcing politicians into a crisis meeting. Parents had to lift their children in the air to "stop them suffocating" in the crush at Tenerife airport this week. Several UK flights arrived in quick succession, and there were just two passport booths staff by four officers on hand to process the hoards. Progress was agonisingly slow - with passengers crammed in line for over two hours before finally getting through. Some were even held on the stuffy plane on the runway for almost an hour while the backlog cleared. Conditions were sweltering inside the airport, with some even branding the nightmare "inhuman". Lourdes Torrecillas, a Tenerife resident returning from Bristol, told local media the situation "claustrophobic" and "third world". She was made to sit on the plane for 45 minutes and said: "Once inside, we couldn't move our arms, we could barely breathe, and people were sweating. "Some parents lifted their children onto their shoulders to stop them from suffocating. There were no toilets, and people were visibly distressed.' The local fumed: 'This was an inhumane wait. These are people who've paid to enjoy a few days of sunshine, they shouldn't be treated like cattle.' Major Brit holiday airport fumigated after infestation of BEDBUGS with passengers & airline staff reporting itchy bites Lourdes slammed the lack of medical care and revealed that the airline did not even provide children with water. She also claimed staff said the airport descends into similar chaos "almost every night". But the exhausted passenger ultimately laid the blame at the feet of the airport operator, AENA, and called on the government to boost the workforce. One of the reasons behind Monday's bedlam was that the airport's automatic check in system could not process children's passports. This led to families with restless kids and piles of luggage stranded in crowds for hours. 5 There were just two passport booths run by four officers processing the crowds Credit: Tiktok 5 Tenerife is a hugely popular holiday destination thanks to its idyllic coastline Credit: Getty The President of Tenerife's ruling council, Rosa Dávila, called an emergency meeting following the mayhem. She admitted the situation was "unacceptable", but blamed a lack of border staff which she said has been a problem ever since Brexit. Similar chaos has played out at the airport in the past during peak tourism season. Dávila said she had written to mainland politicians but feels abandoned by them. She vented: "There's a serious lack of respect towards Tenerife. "We're managing essential services locally, but without state support, we're being left to fail." The Tenerife hotel association, Ashotel, has repeatedly warned that these intolerable delays will spoil the island's reputation and deter Brits from coming. Tenerife's Tourism Minister, Lope Afonso, warned: "This is the first impression our visitors get. "After hours on a plane, they're met with long waits and no explanation. "It's not acceptable, and it's hurting our brand as a quality tourist destination." He continued: "Tenerife competes globally. Other countries have adapted their systems since Brexit. Why haven't we? "We need immediate solutions to avoid this happening again, especially with the busy summer season ahead."

Schoolgirl scalded on Ryanair flight from Lourdes accepts €30,000 settlement
A girl who was scalded on a Ryanair flight from Lourdes has accepted a €30,000 settlement offer from the airline together with significant legal costs. Sienna Darcy was aged seven when a 'piping hot' pasta meal including oil and sauce spilt on to her hand during a flight to Dublin on July 12th, 2019. The meal had been placed before Sienna by cabin staff on what was claimed to have been an unstable extendable seat tray, the Circuit Civil Court heard. Ryanair staff had immediately treated Sienna with cold water, cooling gel and Calpol, the court heard READ MORE After landing she was taken by ambulance to Temple Street Children's Hospital for treatment. Darach MacNamara, for Sienna, told the court that while photographs of the burns to her left hand made for gruesome viewing he had to include them in evidence to reveal the extent of her injuries. . Sienna, who is now 12, sued through her mother, Aideen Darcy, of Oscar Square, Dublin. In written evidence, Mrs Darcy told the court: 'It really was a horrific experience.' She said her daughter had screamed in pain and had continued to be in pain and had cried for the duration of the flight. She had been required to attend the hospital on numerous occasions. Mr MacNamara said that although Sienna had suffered serious burns to her hand at the time, her wounds had healed very well without scarring and she had suffered no loss of function. She had been psychologically affected by the experience, he said. He said Sienna had to have a significant amount of counselling in the form of therapy, and the court considered a medical report from Dylan Murray, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and two reports from consultant psychiatrist Blanaid Gavin. A settlement offer of €25,000 had been rejected by Judge Michael Walsh in January as inadequate. Mr MacNamara said the airline had come up with an extra €5,000, bringing its offer up to €30,000, which he was recommending to the court. Judge Christopher Callan told Sienna on Monday how he hoped her 'horrible experience' would not prevent her from travelling again as it was very important she travelled as much as she could. He said he was happy to approve the settlement offer of €30,000 to include special damages of €2,610.

Madonna posts rare snap with most of her kids... after ex Sean Penn trashed her over marriage
Madonna posted a rare snap of herself with most of her children as ex-husband Sean Penn dragged her over their marriage in a new interview. The 66-year-old Queen of Pop - who is partnering with Netflix on a biographical limited series - took to Instagram on Sunday to commemorate Mother's Day with a photo with five of her six children. Madonna posed in front of a tree alongside Lourdes, 28, David, 19, Mercy, 19, and 12-year-old twins Stella and Estere. The only child who was missing was her 24-year-old son with ex-husband Guy Richie, Rocco. Madonna shared the gallery of snaps with a lengthy caption about their time together as she wrote to her near 20million followers: 'I spent Mother's Day weekend with 5 of my 6 children. Sunshine laughter, horseback riding. soccer, and the sound of music! 'The best gift they gave me was the gift of not arguing and being loving to one another. When you raise children to be unique and opinionated, you also create your own debate team !!!' She finished off the completive post by paying tribute to her fellow mothers. The Like A Prayer hitmaker concluded: 'Motherhood could never be described with a few words. Nothing can prepare you. 'Happy Mother's Day !! To All the Women out there doing the Heavy Lifting !' This came as her 64-year-old ex husband Sean Penn appeared on the Louis Theroux Podcast where he slammed their four year marriage. Sean and Madonna tied the knot in 1985, starting a rollercoaster marriage in which she filed for divorce in 1987, reconciled with him, then left him for good in 1989. Two years later in 1991 Madonna's documentary titled Truth Or Dare was released as she referred to the actor as 'the love of her life.' Louis asked Sean if he had seen the documentary and if he recalled that specific quote to which the actor responded that he did. The Fast Times At Ridgemont High actor said: 'I do. I remember what she said. She's very sweet. Look, she's been a good friend for a lot of years.' Sean then went on to trash their marriage while revealing that they were able to resume their friendship relatively quickly. The actor explained: 'It didn't take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner. It didn't take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. 'I have a lot of fond memories of it – it's not all jail. But there was a lot of alcohol and she'd be fairly accusing me of that.' In June 2024, Sean once again denied the wild rumor that he physically abused his ex-wife Madonna, insisting: 'She's someone I love.' During their turbulent marriage in the 1980s, sensational claims surfaced that he tied her to a chair on one occasion and struck her with a baseball bat on another. Both Madonna and Sean have staunchly denied he was ever violent with her, and she even testified on his behalf in a defamation lawsuit over the allegations. At the time, Sean cleared the air on the issue again - while admitting one of their marital squabbles resulted in a SWAT team arriving at their home. Two years later in 1991 Madonna's documentary titled Truth Or Dare was released as she referred to the actor as 'the love of her life' Madonna supposedly called the police saying she was anxious about guns being in the house, and SWAT then burst onto the premises, smashing the windows and putting Sean 'in handcuffs,' he told the New York Times. 'I had a freaking SWAT team come into my house,' Sean recalled in a new interview with the newspaper's longtime columnist Maureen Dowd. 'I said: "I'm not coming out. I'm going to finish my breakfast." The next thing I knew, windows were being broken all around the house and they came in,' he said. Eventually he got wind of the rumors that he had 'trussed her up like a turkey,' he said. 'I didn't know what "trussed up" meant, first.' After he enjoyed a 'lovely night' with a later girlfriend, he woke up the next morning, went out for a cigarette and found himself faced with her 'looking at me like I killed her dog' and asking 'about this hitting Madonna in the head with a baseball bat.' Sean said: 'I didn't know what the hell she was talking about. Now I think it's fair to say that I'm not the biggest guy in the world. But if I hit Mike Tyson in the head with a baseball bat, he's going to the hospital.' He and Madonna now enjoy an amicable rapport, partly because, he said: 'It turns out it's a lot quicker to repair a friendship after divorce if there are not kids involved.' In 2015, Madonna testified that Sean never abused her, supporting his $10 million defamation lawsuit against Empire creator Lee Daniels. Sean trashed their marriage while revealing that they were able to resume their friendship relatively quickly as he explained: 'It didn't take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner. It didn't take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. 'I have a lot of fond memories of it – it's not all jail. But there was a lot of alcohol and she'd be fairly accusing me of that'; they are seen in September 2013 The fracas began after Empire star Terrance Howard admitted in an interview that he had slapped his wife in front of their children. Amid the explosive controversy that resulted, Lee sprang to Terrance's defense, arguing that he had never done what 'Marlon Brando or Sean Penn' did. Sean sued Lee over the remark and Madonna submitted an affidavit on his behalf, specifically denying the allegations about the baseball bat and being tied up. 'While we certainly had more than one heated argument during our marriage, Sean has never struck me, "tied me up" or physically assaulted me, and any report to the contrary is completely outrageous, malicious, reckless and false,' she asserted. The lawsuit eventually ended with a settlement, in which Lee was forced to issue a public apology for his original comments and also had to make a donation to Sean's disaster relief organization CORE.
