Jamshedpur FC beat Indian Army 1-0 for second consecutive victory in Durand Cup
JAMSHEDPUR: Sanan Mohammed's second-half strike secured a 10 win for Jamshedpur FC over Indian Army, marking their second consecutive victory in Group C of the 134th Durand Cup football tournament on Tuesday.
With this win at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur FC moved to the top of the group with six points from two matches and are now closer to a place in the knockout stages.
Indian Army dominated the first half of the game, maintaining possession and creating better chances.
The Armymen could have taken a two-goal lead within the first 15 minutes but Samir Murmu's effort from a tight angle whisked past the far post. Minutes later, Samananda Singh glanced a header wide from a corner kick.
Jamshedpur FC were finding it difficult to match up with the physicality of the Army side as they dominated the midfield with Lethaolen Khongsai and P Christopher Kamei dictating the pace of the attacks.

Bumrah fit, available for Asia Cup
MUMBAI: Apart from India's dramatic win over England in the fifth Test to level the series 2-2, Indian fans would be relieved that pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is fit and fine. Bumrah sat out the Oval Test to manage his workload and not due to any injury, it is learnt. He is available for the Asia Cup T20 tournament next month. Jasprit Bumrah. After Bumrah played the first and third Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, the team management had the choice of playing him in the fourth or the final Test. Bumrah took 14 wickets in the England series with five-wicket hauls at Leeds and Lord's. The Gujarat player has been sensational for India across formats and lethal in Tests with 219 wickets in just 48 matches at an average of 19.82 and a strike rate of 42.6, but has battled fitness issues, including back injury that needed surgery. Careful about their strike bowler's workload, the team managements have been selective, getting him to play mainly in marquee ICC events and important bilateral fixtures. The Asia Cup begins on September 9.

That fighting spirit defines the team, said captain Shubman Gill on Monday. It was a massive series for Gill and his team following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, besides the absence senior player like Mohammed Shami. Even Jasprit Bumrah was not available for all games, forcing them to change the bowling combination in every game. On day four of the final Test here, India looked down and out with Harry Brook and Joe Root keeping England on course for a record chase but Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna brought the visitors back from the dead. Even on Monday morning, the odds were stacked against India but Gill and Co. managed to pull off a sensational victory to draw to series. 'What we did this morning, kind of summarises what this team is all about. 70 odd runs, 7 wickets in hand (on day four). The way Brook and Root were going, not many teams in the world would have given themselves a chance," said Gill. 'But this team believes that, whenever we have some kind of an opening, we can get through that opening. And that's what we were talking about once Brook was out, and then we got an early wicket of Bethell, that this is our opening, let's try to build pressure on them. 'But when you've got bowlers like Siraj, makes your job as a captain very easy. You're just standing out there, and you just want to appreciate their bowling," the Indian captain said after the famous win. There were ups and downs the whole series with both teams fighting tooth and nail. As the series went on, Gill grew as a batter and as captain. 'There are moments like these, where you feel the journey is worth it, the moment that we had in the morning. And there have been a lot of highs and lows, and that's kind of expected, especially with sports. 'Obviously, every game or every time you go into bat, you want to be able to perform, you want to be able to score a century. But unfortunately, that's not how the game or life works. You should be able to navigate through the highs and lows of life and try to stay balanced throughout. 'That's what at least I believe in, that I want to be able to stay balanced, whether we have won the match, lost the match, I've done well, or I've not done well," said Gill. With a staggering 754 runs, Gill led from the front in his debut series and silenced the critics who questioned his technique and record in SENA countries. He ended up with four hundreds, including a double. Asked how he evolved as a batter, Gill had plenty to say. 'Each 100 that I scored had a very different significance,. The one in Leeds was my first match. I was under a bit of pressure, not being able to perform especially in this format how I wanted to, so that 100 would always be special for me. And then the double hundred and the 100 in Birmingham, to be able to seal that match was also special. 'And the one in Manchester, to be able to save that game from there. Each of them has a story, and each of them means a lot to me," said the young skipper. Gill spoke about the rationale behind placing all the fielders in the deep on day five with England nine wickets down and Gus Atkinson batting with Chris Woakes, who came out despite a broken arm and was in no position to bat. 'We thought that we still have the wicket-taking options on this wicket. If they want to make runs, they will have to hit boundaries. But rather let them have 30 singles and score those 30 runs, rather than score 5-6 boundaries. 'We knew that there was a lot of pressure on them. Whichever team is in that position, so there is always more pressure on the batting team. Because it's a one-ball game. So we thought that the longer we take the game, the more probability of taking the wicket," Gill added. Siraj emerges from Bumrah's shadows
Mumbai: It almost felt karmic when Mohammed Siraj brought the curtains down on the final Test at The Oval after an enthralling hour's play on Day 5 with his knockout punch – a yorker fired in with a scrambled seam grip to uproot Gus Atkinson's off-stump. As the fast bowler flaunted his imitation of Cristiano Ronaldo's signature celebratory move, the Indian section among the capacity crowd erupted in delirium. If that was the case, Siraj's fielding lapse on Sunday that gave Harry Brook a reprieve on 19 and the rising England star smashed 111 would have remained the lasting image of the Test among the emotional Indian fans. To those who don't stop trying, life gives another chance. If it wasn't so, Siraj would not have got a shot at redemption, having also despaired that he was the last wicket to fall in the Lord's defeat that ended India's batting resistance and gave England the series lead. To help overcome that low, Ravindra Jadeja had asked Siraj to think of his late father – he drove autorickshaw to make ends meet – and how hard he had worked to get here. Siraj looked heavenwards in thanks on completing the win. Siraj was the heartbeat of the team through the gruelling five-Test series packed into six weeks. 'A captain's dream', Shubman Gill called him. The final wicket came in Siraj's 186th over of the series, 47th spell overall. The only fast bowler to play all the Tests and still remain standing. The body protested with aches and pains but the spirit was unbroken. Gill was the Player-of-the-Series for his 754 runs, but India's would not have levelled the series without Siraj's relentless spells. If England felt India were still in the game with only 35 runs to defend and 4 wickets to get, it was because of Siraj. 'When I woke up this morning, I told myself I would change the game. I opened Google, downloaded a 'believe' image and put that as my phone wallpaper,' he said after the match. Siraj had many prized scalps in the series with the wobble seam nipping into right-handers, but to put scoreboard pressure and under grey skies on Monday, he bowled outswingers, slightly wider. That's how he got Jamie Smith, who could have sealed it, but never got the freedom to score. Siraj was so good in the morning that Gill felt, 'they couldn't touch bat on ball'. With so much swing on offer with the old ball, India didn't take the second new ball. The batters would have known Siraj's sucker delivery – the wobble ball that shapes in. Still, Jamie Overton and Atkinson were defeated. Though India won by only six runs this time, they had pushed England into the final hour of the previous Tests. The real test was Sunday evening when Siraj had to lead a three-man pace attack knackered after the pasting by the 195-run stand between centurions Brook and Joe Root. Siraj soldiered on bowling long spells, conducted the crowd and helped set up wickets for Prasidh Krishna at the other end. 'My only plan was to bowl consistently at one spot and to move the ball in and out from there. I didn't want to try too much because that could have released the pressure,' he said. It may sound a cliche, but wickets are often earned by repeating such 'boring' tactics. In Day 4's early exchanges, Siraj beat Ben Duckett five times in an over from over the wicket. Prasidh ramped up pressure by coming in from a different angle, pushing the aggressive left-hander further back to eventually get him with a fuller ball. When Siraj isn't taking wickets - he took 9/190 in the match and 23 in the series – he's setting up batters. As seen during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional, Siraj unselfishly provided the support cast. 'My job there was to work in partnership with Jassi bhai…how well he was bowling,' he told reporters. 'But I always believe I can get wickets in any situation. Even if I am bowling the eighth over of a spell, I give 100 percent.' In England, Siraj truly emerged from Bumrah's shadows. Both the Tests India won came in Bumrah's absence. And they couldn't have done it without the man who never stopped believing.
