Arsenal told to forget Sesko and Gyokeres and strike £50m Liverpool deal
Arsenal are being urged to sign a player who Liverpool may be willing to sell for £50million, and has been backed to score them plenty of goals despite a disappointing season
Arsenal have been urged to sign Darwin Nunez following reports Liverpool could be willing to sell the striker for £50million. The 25-year-old is expected to leave Anfield in the next few months after a disappointing return in front of goal for the newly-crowned Premier League champions this season.
The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East, with Al-Nassr having a £60m bid for the frontman rejected back in January. The former Benfica man has also attracted interest from teams in Italy, with AC Milan and Napoli both said to be keen on a deal.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is now being encouraged to consider a move for Nunez after finishing just behind the Reds in second this term. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has made the suggestion after boldly claiming he could bag the Gunners 25 goals next season.
Such a tally would require a marked improvement from Nunez, who only scored seven times across all competitions in his most recent campaign. However, the former Wolves and Wrexham manager said he believed Arsenal would be lucky to have him after describing their current transfer targets as "gambles".
RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal's reported prime targets, though the former is understood to be the club's favoured direction. 22-year-old striker Sesko scored 21 times last season while Gyokeres netted an incredible 54 goals from 52 matches.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders said: "Is there any fan out there that would be disappointed if their club was linked with Nunez? He's not got enough goals for Liverpool, but I think we all look at him with the same eyes.
"I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Arsenal and scored 25 goals. The people they've got lined up, they're all gambles. At least he's played in the Premier League for three or four years, and you know what you're going to get.
"He works his socks off, even if he doesn't score, so he's not a passenger. That's why the Liverpool fans like him."
He added: "He's not hopeless and what surprises you about him is that he's got every finish in his locker. He can go around the keeper, he can shoot from range and he can score headers, but he does seem to find a way of missing sometimes."
Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike on the cards. With a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz also in the works, it could lead to several outgoings to fund the new arrivals.
Nunez is looking for a new challenge after starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot this season. He earned praise from his manager for his positive attitude in spite of the lack of minutes.
Discussing Nunez's situation at the moment, Slot said: "I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role.
"And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly [any] minutes."

Jose Mourinho at centre of Turkish scandal as leaked texts force resignations
Turkish football has been rocked by a leaked messages scandal in which it is alleged governing body chiefs were plotting to "make Jose Mourinho pay" after the Fenerbahce boss was "tolerated too much." TFF committee president Celal Nuri Demirturk and the entire board of directors have resigned en masse after a series of communications were leaked in relation to Mourinho's complaints about refereeing standards in February following a draw with closest rivals Galatasaray. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was banned for four games and fined £35,000 for 'derogatory and offensive statements towards the Turkish referee" and accusing "Turkish football of chaos and disorder with insulting and offensive statements towards both the Turkish football community and all Turkish referees.' Mourinho subsequently said that he was suing Galatasaray following an accusation of racism from the Istanbul rivals after he said their bench 'jumped around like monkeys' during the scoreless draw. He had previously claimed Turkish referees were "worse than I thought" and "smell bad." But the leaked messages have prompted fury with Fenerbahce releasing a statement questioning the impartiality of the sport. A club spokesperson said: 'Our club has made an official application to the Turkish Football Federation in response to the correspondence that has been made public today and is claimed to belong to members of the Professional Football Disciplinary Board. 'We believe that this hostile mentality, which clearly violates the principle of impartiality and is based on showdowns and revenge, has no place in Turkish Sports.' The club's general secretary Burak Kizilhan added: "If these allegations are true, not only would the impartiality of the relevant board be compromised, but the institutional reputation and public trust in the Turkish Football Federation would be seriously damaged. "For individuals who serve on one of the most important boards with the duty to establish justice in Turkish football to be involved in such statements would render the concept of 'discipline' ineffective and constitute a clear attack on the principles of impartiality and equality." In another meeting between Fener and Galatasaray in early April, Mourinho approached opposition manager Okan Buruk at full time and grabbed his nose - leading to another three-game ban. Mourinho had also linked himself with the Rangers job and said he would be keen on taking over a Premier League struggler so he could avoid Turkish referees. Alessia Russo: I fell into ‘trap' of scrolling social media at last Euros
England striker Alessia Russo says she now avoids social media at major tournaments after previously falling into the 'trap' of reading 'really damaging' comments. On Tuesday tennis player Katie Boulter lifted the lid on the level of abuse aimed at some in her sport and revealed she and her family have received death threats. Arsenal forward Russo, who is gearing up for next month's Euros, said she could empathise with Boulter and has learned to avoid the platforms for the benefit of both her mental health and her football. 'I think every player might have a different story about that side of the game, but it's definitely one that can be really damaging,' said Russo. 'I have faced it in the past and I think most players here have. When I was younger I probably got sucked into it more. I read it more than I should have and listened to it more than I should have. The only opinions that matter are my team-mates, my coaches and my family. 'I think you have to remember that they are the people you need to lean on in tough times. As I've got older, I understand more what works for me. In my first Euros I was on social media and I would have a look, have a scroll, and I got caught in a trap sometimes. 'Going into the World Cup, I completely came off everything and I had people to run my Instagram. I just focused on the tournament. It's personal preference and whatever works for the team. Staying away from it and staying focused as a team is what works for me.' Manchester United attacking midfielder Ella Toone added: 'It's individual. Whenever we go to a tournament it's individual. It's what people want to do. 'I know that my decision might be different to someone else's and I have to respect that decision. I do like to scroll on Instagram. But I know other people turn their phones off. 'We have that conversation and all know how each other wants to go through the tournament. We respect each other's decision. If I see something on Instagram I'm not going to tell someone or blurt it out to the team because they don't want to see it. I think it's a personal preference.'
