Ward said: 'Hayley has been unlucky to miss out on being included in recent squads, simply because we have a lot of competition for places at centre-back.
'We have kept an eye on her at club level, I've spoken with her managers and also had conversations with her. So we are excited to bring Hayley in and give her a chance.'

Abom eyes chance to follow McIlroy into Irish Close history

Thomas Abom has the chance to make history this weekend and become the first golfer to defend the AIG Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship since Rory McIlroy. McIlroy, who won this title in 2005 and 2006, was victorious when the event last took place in Westport and with the event returning to the county Mayo venue on Friday, the Edmondstown golfer is eyeing up more history. The then 19-year-old Abom claimed the title in dramatic fashion at Dun Laoghaire last year, defeating hometown favourite Richard Sykes on the 20th hole of their playoff to become the first Edmondstown player to win an Irish championship, a winning moment that remains fresh in his mind. 'When I think back, I just think of all the Dun Laoghaire members around and then there was about 10 supporters from Edmondstown,' said Abom. 'The second hole, when I hit the shot to four feet and just the 10 people from Edmondstown going crazy, and then making the putt, that's what really comes to mind, the winning putt, the winning moment, I would play that a lot in my head.' Since that breakthrough, Abom has been in strong form at home and abroad. A runner-up finish at the Boyd Quaich Memorial Tournament in Scotland, a top five at the Mullingar Scratch Trophy, and a Scratch Cup victory at Hermitage Golf Club have all fuelled his confidence heading into one of the biggest events of the year. 'I've been playing well. I've been putting myself in good chances to win. I just need to piece it all together, but I'm happy with my game,' said Abom. 'The game feels good, so no reason why I can't go out and win it.' The championship's 72-hole stroke play format will see the first round played on Friday and the second Saturday, followed by 36 holes on Sunday to crown the winner, and having been through it all on his way to victory last year, Abom knows patience will be key. 'With four round tournaments, there's always going to be lads shooting low in the first round, but what you come to realise is that it's the lads who can stick around, and then you pounce', said Abom. 'You've got four rounds, so it's kind of a slow burn. Just waiting for your time.' West, East and South of Ireland champions Dylan Holmes (Greystones), David Howard (Fota Island) and Jonathan Keane (Lahinch) will be among the field while there will also be strong Mayo interest, led by Westport's own Conor Stapleton and former member Harry Gillivan (Portmarnock). Ryan Corrigan and Kevin Barry (both Castlebar), Max Humphreys (Ballinrobe), Cormac Ó Muirithe (Belmullet), John William Burke (Ballyhaunis) and Michael Joyce (Mulranny) will also carry home county hopes. Abom begins his defence from the first tee at 1.59pm on Friday alongside Robert Abernethy (Dun Laoghaire) and Conor McCarthy (Headfort). 'Obviously the end goal is to win, but there's still lots of things you can learn about tournaments, even if it doesn't go well,' said Abom. 'This is the big one to defend the title, so I'm really looking forward to it.'

Shamrock Rovers player getting married hours before vital ECL qualifier

Lee Steacy will get hitched today just hours before Shamrock Rovers' vital Conference League qualifier in Tallaght. The Hoops' back-up goalkeeper is marrying his partner Katie and will not be cutting short the celebrations to hot-foot it to his club's third qualifying round second leg clash with Ballkani as he has been given the night off to enjoy the nuptials. With Leon Pohls moving on last month it is Alex Noonan, 17, who will provide back-up to number one choice netminder Ed McGinty. The Kosovan outfit lead 1-0 after the first leg but Rovers are fancied to turn the tables at home and set up a play-off for the group stages next week. Steacy was with Rovers as a teenager before stints with Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, Shelbourne, Longford Town, Drogheda and Cobh Ramblers. He returned to the Hoops at the start of last year and was Stephen Bradley's reserve keeper behind Pohls. McGinty was signed as the club's new first-choice keeper at the start of this year and Pohls left for Vllaznia in Albania last month. Rovers made the group stages of the Europa Conference League last year and became the first Irish club to reach the play-off round, where they lost on penalties to Molde, with their ground-breaking European run earning the club over €7m. The tie could go to penalties and, if it happens, McGinty says he'll be ready. 'I enjoy penalties,' the 26-year-old said on the eve of the second leg. 'These games are all or nothing and there's no hiding from that. I just try to stay calm through it all and just try and do my job. That's all I really try to do.'

Joao Palhinha predicts ‘something special' from Spurs despite Super Cup defeat

Joao Palhinha believes Tottenham have the hunger to achieve 'something special' this season after their painful Super Cup defeat on penalties by Paris St Germain. Spurs were minutes away from winning a second trophy in the space of three months after goals by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero either side of half-time put them in control in Udine. PSG upped the ante in the second period and, after Lee Kang-in reduced the deficit with five minutes left, fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time after a 2-2 draw. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank passes the trophy during the medal ceremony (Antonio Calanni/AP) Vitinha's miss coupled with successful kicks by Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur put Thomas Frank's team two up in the shootout, but Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to score from the spot and the French side claimed further silverware with a 4-3 victory. Palhinha was eager to draw on the positives ahead of Tottenham being set to return to Champions League action next month for the first time in three seasons. 'It is football. At the end we are really sad. Not just the players but all the staff, all the crowd that came to support us during the game,' Palhinha said. 'I think we also need to feel proud for what we did until the 80 minutes. You know because we fought all the games with a top team and I think we showed what we are here to get in the future. 'We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special. 'I think we have the hunger from all the players to achieve this title. Everyone gave all the maximum in this game and I think we showed what we are capable of. 'We played against a top team and I think we have everything, a top coach, top players in this squad, a top crowd with a lot of hunger to achieve titles and me and my team-mates will fight for it, for sure. We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special 'A tough night, but I know that we will shape good things in the future. We just need to keep our head up.' This was Palhinha's competitive debut for Spurs after he joined on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich. Palhinha struggled during his debut campaign in Munich, but is excited to be back in the Premier League and London following two successful years at Fulham before Tottenham's opener at home to Burnley on Saturday. He said: 'In the Premier League you have also every single week top games. I think we cannot relax and the good thing now is we have another game on Saturday to change the (bad) things and start with the right foot in the Premier League. 'I enjoyed when I played in Fulham the two years that I was there. I really miss the Premier League. I think it's a league that everyone plays and when you play there and go to play outside somewhere else, you miss something. 'I'm really proud to be back again to the Premier League. I'm really happy to be in this top club and top team. I just need to enjoy it.' Proud. There's plenty more to come 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 13, 2025 Mohammed Kudus also made his debut for Tottenham and backed them to learn lessons from the defeat. 'We've shown that we can compete at the highest level, we have to take the positives and focus on the tasks we have ahead in the coming season,' Kudus insisted. 'This is a good step, of course a big disappointment but we have a lot more to play this season, a lot more competitions and we take this as a lesson and move forward.'
