Top Performances Joel Klatt Has Called: Tavon Austin Surprises vs. Oklahoma

Fox Sports18-07-2025
The college football offseason is not only a great time to look ahead, but it's also a great time to do some reflection. In the latest episode of my podcast, I did a little reflection thanks to a mailbag question. A fan named Roy L asked me which player had the best performance in a game that I've called.
Honestly, that's such a difficult question to answer. I can't pick just one because there have been so many incredible performances. So, I'm going to share my top five individual performances I've ever called instead. Throughout this week, I'll go one by one through my top five, in descending order.
We're now down to my No. 1 pick. Before sharing which performance tops the list, I have a pair of honorable mentions that I want to give shout-outs to. Kyler Murray in the 2018 Red River Showdown was phenomenal. Texas won that game, but the former Oklahoma quarterback had a run down the sideline in that game that's still probably the singular best play I've ever seen.
The other honorable mention I had was Ohio State quarterback JT Barrett's comeback performance against Penn State in 2017. If you remember, Saquon Barkley took the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Barrett was incredible in that game. I just couldn't find a spot for him on that list.
Here's the full list to this point:
5. Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. & EDGE JT Tuimoloau at Penn State (2022)
4. Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson vs. Ohio State (2021)
3. Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield vs. Oklahoma State (2017)
2. Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter vs. TCU (2023)
No. 1 might come as a surprise to some, but it was truly an incredible performance. 1. West Virginia WR Tavon Austin vs. Oklahoma (2012)
I had to go into the way-back machine for my No. 1 pick. I feel like not many people remember this game, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
Austin wasn't West Virginia's running back. He was one of the Mountaineers' leading receivers in 2012 and in the two seasons prior to that. But because of injuries at running back, West Virginia threw a bit of a curveball. Austin lined up at tailback from the jump. I thought, "Well, this is really strange." We weren't told that this was happening in any of the pre-production meetings, so we were caught by surprise.
To add some more context, this was a night game in Morgantown, as West Virginia was hosting Bob Stoops' Oklahoma squad at the height of his run with the Sooners, who had won three of the last five Big 12 titles at that time. Oklahoma looked poised to win another conference title that year as well, entering that game at 7-2.
But there was Austin, playing running back and threatening to upset Oklahoma. He had 21 carries for 344 yards (16.4 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 82 receiving yards in that game, giving him 426 yards of total offense on 25 total touches. He essentially gave the Mountaineers 17 yards every time he got the ball.
It was really a remarkable performance. I felt like I was coming out of my skin every single time Austin touched the ball. It was incredible. Unfortunately, his efforts that day didn't result in a victory. Oklahoma won 50-49 after putting up 554 yards and six touchdowns on offense. The last of those six touchdowns was the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining.
Austin's performance was a highlight in a largely forgettable 7-6 season for West Virginia, but I'll certainly remember this game for years to come.

Florida Trending for Prospect Tabbed Next Freshman Phenom

Florida Trending for Prospect Tabbed Next Freshman Phenom originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators are in the hunt for a very intriguing college football prospect from the 2028 class. Social media blew up last weekend after a crazy one-handed catch was made at the NFL Flag Championships by receiver Brysen Wright. The original video of Wright's snag has over 7 million views and caught the eye of NFL talent like Patrick Mahomes, Caleb Williams, and others. On3's Adam Gorney caught up with Wright to discuss recruiting and which schools are currently in the lead. Wright revealed he has heard from the Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes. 'The only (main) schools I'm hearing from now really are Ohio State, Florida and Miami,' Gorney compared Wright to sophomore Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. Smith burst onto the scene last season, leading the Buckeyes with 1,315 receiving yards as a true freshman. Smith was a former five-star prospect and the top receiver in the 2024 class. Wright is rated as a four-star on Rivals, and On3's Hayes Fawcett believes the recruit will be one of the prospects in the class. Wright is familiar with Florida, as the Gators had him in town for an unofficial visit in November of last year. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has tabbed Florida as the favorite and gives it a 21.9% chance to land him. Ohio State has a 13.7% chance, while Miami has a 1.2% chance. While Wright's decision may not be imminent, Florida is trending upward as a program. The Gators just secured the first winning season of head coach Billy Napier's tenure, and people are paying close attention to Florida. Greg McElroy even said that Florida could be a problem with a consistent running game. If Wright pans out as people expect, it would be a massive addition to story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 24, 2025, where it first appeared.

ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy

ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy originally appeared on The Spun. Believe it or not, we're just 20 days away from the start of the 2025 college football season. Week 0 will feature five intriguing matchups, which includes a showdown between Iowa State and Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland. The following week there'll be countless games on display, such as Texas vs. Ohio State. That might very well be a preview for this year's College Football Playoff. Even though Texas and Ohio State are loaded with talent heading into this season, ESPN's Mark Schlabach doesn't have either team ranked No. 1 as of this time. Instead, that title belongs to Penn State. "After finally turning the corner under coach James Franklin in 2024, the Nittany Lions look loaded for bear this coming season. With Allar, Allen and Singleton returning, Penn State should have one of the most balanced offenses in the FBS, especially if Allar takes the next step as a downfield passer. Adding Pena, Ross and Hudson was critical; Penn State's receivers didn't have a reception in a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl. Pena, a slot receiver, had 84 catches for 941 yards with nine scores in 2024," Schlabach wrote. Schlabach actually has Ohio State ranked No. 5 as of this August, which is pretty low for the defending champions. Here's the top 25 from ESPN: Penn State Clemson Texas Georgia Ohio State LSU Notre Dame Oregon Alabama BYU Illinois Arizona State South Carolina Iowa State SMU Texas Tech Indiana Kansas State Florida Michigan Miami Louisville Texas A&M Ole Miss Oklahoma Unsurprisingly, these rankings from ESPN sparked quite a debate on social media. "This is a wild Top 25... Penn State is NOT No. 1 Dawgs are NOT No. 4 Indiana and Sooners should be NOWHERE near Top 25 Miami, Fla. should be in Top 10," one fan said. "Not even Penn State fans believe Penn State is No. 1," another fan wrote. "I think this may come back to haunt Penn State," a third fan commented. Penn State has an early test against Oregon on Sept. 27. That could tell us all we need to know about James Franklin's squad. Do you think Penn State deserves to be ranked No. 1 heading into this season?ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas likely to be battle of unbeatens

College football season is less than a month away, and Oklahoma appears to be on the rise. At least, the Sooners appear to be set to improve on last year's 6-7 season. That will almost certainly be the case if Brad Crawford at CBS Sports has his preseason prediction come true. Crawford looked at each of the 16 teams in the Southeastern Conference and predicted when each would be handed its first loss in league play. For Oklahoma, it comes in the second SEC game, though by that point, OU will already have been, at least, 4-1, in Crawford's predictions. That second SEC game, by the way? It's the Red River Rivalry. Imagine the hype for Red River if both teams come in unbeaten and inside the top 10? It's possible. If the Sooners take out Michigan and Auburn during the opening month of the campaign, Brent Venables' new-look team will have a perfect record going to Dallas. - Crawford, CBS Sports It wasn't that long ago when OU and Texas both met as undefeateds in the regular season. Back in 2023, the 12th-ranked Sooners and No. 5 Longhorns played to a 34-30 Oklahoma win at the Cotton Bowl. Brent Venables' team would stumble over the next month with losses against Kansas and Oklahoma State to stifle a potentially massive season, but that was then. Texas may enter 2025 as the No. 1 team in the nation, and Oklahoma appears likely to be ranked in the top-25. Another year of each entering Dallas unbeaten may provide a mutual top-10 matchup. The Sooners, and Venables specifically, could really use it, and with John Mateer and Jadyn Ott on offense, it's definitely possible. Crawford believes that Venables needs a strong start to the 2025 season more than just about any other coach. With games against Michigan and Auburn in the first four weeks, Venables and the Sooners have an early opportunity to make a statement heading even before they get to the Red River Showdown.
