Chinese tour operators enter 'hibernation mode' as Malaysian tourists to Thailand overtake China for first time in 13 years

BANGKOK: Thailand's tourism industry is grappling with a significant downturn in Chinese visitors, with many tour operators entering what industry leaders describe as "hibernation mode" as they await a market recovery expected by 2026.
The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has warned that Chinese tourist arrivals this year will reach only five million people, with the majority coming for business rather than leisure purposes.
True tourist groups are estimated to represent just 20 per cent of arrivals, or approximately one million visitors.
The decline reached a symbolic milestone on June 6 when Malaysian tourists surpassed Chinese visitors to become Thailand's top source market for the first time in 13 years, since 2012.
Statistics from Jan 1 to 8 June show Chinese tourist arrivals totalling 2,029,481 people, whilst Malaysian visitors reached 2,041,002.
The shift follows ongoing safety perception issues that have plagued Thailand's image amongst Chinese travellers, particularly since the disappearance of Chinese actress Xing Xing near the Thai-Myanmar border in early January.
Sisdivachr Cheewarattanapor, Honorary President and Senior Advisory Chairman of ATTA, which represents 1,554 members including tour operators and tourism businesses, described the severe impact on the industry.
"Since the Xing Xing incident, Chinese tourist confidence has been affected for over five months," he told Krungthep Turakij.
"Some tour companies specialising in the Chinese market are in hibernation mode because there's no work, no tours coming in."
He explained that stronger companies are struggling to survive whilst hoping for recovery in the remaining months of this year and next year.
Weaker operators that relied exclusively on the Chinese market have been forced to suspend operations temporarily.
"Some companies have closed entirely," Sisdivachr noted. "They had reopened after Covid hoping the Chinese market would recover to pre-pandemic levels. Last year showed good travel momentum, but now with no customers, they've closed again to wait and see if the market recovers."
The tourism downturn is also affecting major property developers' investment strategies.
Wallapa Traisorat, CEO and Managing Director of Asset World Corp Public Company Limited (AWC), revealed that while the company's five-year investment plan worth 100 billion baht remains on track, adjustments may be necessary to align with global economic conditions.
"The economy may recover and improve in the next 2-3 years," Wallapa explained. "We're waiting for the right timing to continue investments and focusing on projects where we see market opportunities first."
AWC is concentrating its investments on destination model projects to strengthen the potential of both cities and the country by continuously attracting global partners.
Key projects include Wang Nakhon Kasem in Yaowarat, Aquatique Pattaya, Lanna Thique Chiang Mai, and The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok, The Riverside hotel project.
The company has notably adjusted the timeline for its ambitious Asiatique The Riverfront project, which originally planned to build Thailand's tallest 100-story building. - The Nation/ANN

Tan also hoped the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry would include local business chambers as advisory partners to ensure accurate information sharing and effective business matchmaking, especially in serving enterprises from China. 'MCA is not just a political party. 'It is also a 'bridge' for industrial cooperation between Malaysia and China,' Tan said after the meeting with Huang at the chamber's premises in Puchong, Selangor. 'We actively help businesses from both countries establish connections and expand into each other's markets. 'We want to ensure advancing mutual benefits in economic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Malaysia and China,' he added. Huang said the chamber, with 15 years of history in Malaysia, had hosted over 1,000 groups of Chinese and international business people. 'I hope businesses from both countries will engage in more frequent cooperation and that the spirit and culture of Zhejiang will be spread to Malaysia.'

THE 'Two Countries, Twin Parks' (Twin Parks) initiative between Malaysia and China has generated over RM117bil in cumulative gross industrial output since it began in 2012. The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng said the cooperation between the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (CMQIP) in Guangxi, China, and the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) in Pahang, had made an impact in various industries. 'Since its opening, MCKIP has gathered various major Chinese enterprises spanning industries such as steel, tyres, papermaking, automobile parts manufacturing and food processing. 'Its cumulative gross industrial output had surpassed 100bil yuan (RM58.8bil) by last December. 'Meanwhile, the first phase of CMQIP has secured 345 project agreements, with a gross industrial output of 106bil yuan (RM62.3bil) and a total foreign trade volume of 45.1bil yuan (RM26.5bil),' he said. He was speaking in Putrajaya at the eighth seminar on the Twin Parks cooperation. The 1,511ha CMQIP's first phase is designed for apartments, industries, businesses and office buildings, according to the Malaysia-China Business Council's website. It also includes a 787ha start-up district that started operating in August 2011. Ng said there was still room for improvement in attracting foreign investment and encouraging greater participation of Malaysian businesses. He suggested an inter-park coordination mechanism be set up to speed up the project implementation while bringing in enterprises with high added value. 'Investments in technological innovation as well as research and development also need to be increased. 'We should be more active in attracting international investments by leveraging opportunities like the visa exemption. 'Specialised teams should also be formed to attract high-quality small and medium enterprises from overseas as well as more Malaysian companies.' He also proposed projects that integrated new trends such as automation, digitalisation and green technology. 'We can turn these projects into models for others to learn from. 'We need to improve the overall institutional and business environment of the parks,' he said, noting that they could learn from the Suzhou Industrial Park in Jiangsu, China. 'This can create a more efficient, transparent and convenient investment environment,' Ng added. The seminar was jointly organised by the two industrial parks, along with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (Guangxi) Investment Holding Group Co Ltd and Guangxi Minzu University. Also present were UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat and CMQIP deputy director Zuo Kongtian. Prof Ewe said the seminar's theme of 'Fostering Innovation for a Shared Future' was timely in view of the rapidly changing global economic landscape. 'This rapid evolution is shaped by technological advancements, sustainability regulations and shifting market dynamics. 'It is through collaborative innovation that we can harness opportunities, address shared challenges as well as build a prosperous future,' he said. PETALING JAYA: Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PetChem) may benefit from an expected tightening in global petrochemical supply in 2026 as capacity cuts in South Korea and plant revamp in China are likely to provide price support. Kenanga Research said the supply squeeze could come from restructuring among South Korean petrochemical producers and China's plans to overhaul older facilities. 'South Korean petrochemical producers have agreed to cut 25% of their naphtha cracking capacity in response to a structurally weak market,' it said. The research house said the Chinese government has proposed retrofitting and repurposing facilities aged over 20 years, representing about 40% of China's capacity. While not permanent closures, the phased retrofitting could temporarily remove up to 3.3 million tonnes of effective capacity in 2026, or around 1.7% of global supply. 'Although the reforms do not yet indicate a structural decline in China's petrochemical production, the anticipated retrofitting and upgrades may cause temporary supply tightness in 2026,' Kenanga Research said. At the same time, China is expected to add about 35.2 million tonnes of polyolefin capacity by 2030, a 31% increase assuming no retirement of older assets. However, it was noted that the near-term impact from plant upgrades could still trigger a medium-term squeeze in supply. Kenanga Research highlighted past cycles show how even small supply disruptions could move prices significantly. 'In 2018, polyolefin prices peaked at US$1,400 per tonne due to Asian cracker maintenance losses of just 0.5 million tonnes. In 2022, prices hit US$1,440 per tonne when global linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) operating rates dropped to 83% from 92% in 2021,' the research house said. Nonetheless, the research house is of view that petrochemical prices could stage a meaningful recovery in 2026. And as for PetChem, this outlook might signal a turning point. Kenanga Research said the group's net profit is projected to fall 73% to RM316mil in FY25 before rebounding to RM1.69bil in FY26. 'We revise our FY26 core profit upwards by 51% after adjusting our polyolefin price assumption from US$1,000 to US$1,150 per tonne on the back of better global supply dynamics,' it said. The research house raised its target price for PetChem to RM5.30 and upgraded the stock to 'outperform' from 'market perform'. It said improving chemical prices in FY26 could reduce the likelihood of impairments and mark the start of a cyclical upturn.
