Canadian Vanessa Borovilos sets U.S. Women's Amateur scoring record with 63 at Bandon Dunes

USA Today3 days ago
BANDON, Ore. — A crowd had gathered around the ninth green at Bandon Dunes, with whispers weaving through the gallery about the history about to happen.
Canadian Vanessa Borovilos, on the par-5 green in two shots, was a couple putts away from history. Sitting at 8 under for her round, an eagle would tie her for the lowest score by a female golfer in USGA championship history. A birdie would still put her in the record books.
Th eagle attempt slid past the hole, but she poured in the birdie put from 4 feet and the crowd rejoiced. Borovilos had completed the lowest round in the history of the U.S. Women's Amateur.
Borovilos shot 9-under 63 on Tuesday at Bandon Dunes, setting a record for the lowest round of stroke play in the 125-year history of the U.S. Women's Amateur. On a calm, sunny morning along Oregon's Pacific Coast, Borovilos had 10 birdies and climbed up the leaderboard one birdie at a time. She sits at 7 under overall, one behind leader Eila Galitsky after the morning wave and will be one of the top seeds heading into match play, which begins Wednesday.
"Being off early in the morning, there's really no wind. We were kind of just cruising out there," Borovilos said. "Today, I think I took a little bit more time on my shots, just to make sure I felt completely comfortable over every shot.
"But once the putts started falling, it was kind of easy to get into that rhythm and enjoy the views where I could, so it was a good day."
Borovilos, a rising sophomore at Texas A&M, had six birdies in her first nine holes, the back nine at Bandon Dunes, to turn in 6-under 30. She started the front with a birdie then carded her lone bogey of the day, but no need to fret. A pair of birdies followed that up, and she closed with the birdie on the 18th to sign a record scorecard.
After she made about a 25 footer on the 18th hole to turn in 6 under, Borovilos jokingly asked her coach what the course record was. She said she got lucky with a couple putts catching the hole, but the momentum started early, and she rode it into the early afternoon.
"I think it is my record personally," Borovilos said, "but it's just another day. We have a couple more matches to go this week, so not thinking too much of it.
"I don't think I've had 10 birdies before. I was enjoying it."

Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final?

Leagues Cup Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final? Published Aug. 8, 2025 4:58 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The 2025 Leagues Cup field has now been whittled down to just eight teams — with four each from MLS and Liga MX left standing. We'll get to those quarterfinal matchups, but let's assess the tournament so far. Liga MX Giants Bow Out; Messi, Miami Remain The revamped format – fewer MLS participants, inter-league-only contests until at least the first knockout round – improved the product on the field. It still wasn't enough to prevent MLS clubs from continuing to get the better of their Mexican counterparts in a competition staged entirely on American and Canadian soil, though. (Liga MX squads have failed to reach the final in each of the last two editions.) Coming on the heels of FIFA's U.S.-hosted, 63-match Club World Cup and played at the same time as the Premier League's stateside "Summer Series" in many of the same cities, fan turnout has reflected this market over-saturation. Phase One of the competition drew just 16,631 fans on average, well below MLS's 2025 regular season average of 21,747. Just 5,709 watched already-eliminated San Diego FC beat Mazatlán — another team with no chance to advance — at SnapDragon Stadium on Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT With just four of 18 clubs from each league making the quarterfinal cut, the final first-round match was rendered meaningless for too many fan bases. Club América, Chivas, and Monterrey all went three games and out. Same on the MLS side of the ledger, with defending champ Columbus Crew going home early despite amassing seven points from its three first-round games. Last year's runner-up LAFC and Supporters Shield-chasing FC Cincinnati are similarly gone from trophy contention before the business end of the tournament has even begun. Plenty of star power remains, however. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami is there, with the Herons hoping Messi is healthy for his side's meeting with perennial Liga MX powerhouse Tigres in Fort Lauderdale on Aug 19 or 20. The Seattle Sounders, like Inter Miami also a Club World Cup entrant, are there, too. So are last year's MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, plus Toluca, Pachuca and Puebla from south of the border. The single-elimination quarterfinals are as follows, with exact dates and kickoff times to be announced soon. Quarterfinal Preview Inter Miami vs. Tigres UANL Messi's two assists led the Herons past Atlas in the opener, but the Argentine legend limped out of Miami's second Leagues Cup encounter with a leg injury. Javier Mascherano's team won anyway, despite playing most of the match with 10 men. Miami then came from behind to beat Pumas 3-1, with new signing Rodrigo De Paul running the show in the GOAT's place as Inter clinched a quarterfinal berth. It's the second time this summer that they've advanced to the knockout stage of a major international club tourney, having been eliminated from the Club World Cup by eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain just five weeks ago. (Miami also reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup back in April.) Miami will face a formidable opponent in Tigres, the winners of six Mexican titles since 2011. Los Auriazules are led by longtime Atlético Madrid forward Angel Correa, Messi and De Paul's World Cup-winning teammate in 2022. With four goals in three games so far, Correa leads the Leagues Cup in scoring. Lionel Messi sat out Inter Miami's game on Wednesday due to a minor leg injury, but is expected to be back for the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. (Photo by) Seattle Sounders vs. Puebla The Sounders were the only team in the entire 36-deep field to win all three of its league stage games during regular time, without penalties. Seattle's 7-0 trouncing of reigning Concacaf Champions Cruz Azul was the eye-popper, but the Rave Green also handled Santos Laguna and Tijuana without much trouble. Despite its success in Leagues Cup, Puebla is beatable, too: Los Camoteros finished 17th out of 18 Liga MX teams last season, and they've lost two of three games so far in this one. LA Galaxy vs. Pachuca If you go by their current position in each team's respective domestic circuit, the Galaxy are in big trouble. Pachuca sits atop the Liga MX table three games into the Apertura season, while the MLS Cup holders remain dead last among MLS's 30 franchises, having won just three times in 24 tries in 2025. None of that matters in the Leagues Cup, though. With the playoffs a pipe dream, this is the Galaxy's season now. They've already matched their MLS win total by beating both Tijuana and Santos Laguna by four goals and topping Cruz Azul in a shootout. Now, America's most decorated club is just three more wins away from adding another piece of silverware to its collection. Marco Reus and the LA Galaxy may be dead last in the actual MLS standings, but they're still in the hunt in Leagues Cup play. (Photo by Liza Rosales/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) Orlando City vs. Toluca As impressive as Óscar Pareja's Lions have been so far, they'll surely get their sternest test yet against Toluca. The Red Devils outlasted Club América to claim Liga MX's Clausura title in May, and they've won two of three games to kick off the new Apertura campaign. Toluca beat CF Montreal and NYCFC in regulation and the Crew in a penalty-kick tiebreaker to secure the top seed on Liga MX's side of the bracket. 8/8 is for No. 88: Patrick Kane Day in Chicago is official. ‘It's very special,' the Blackhawks great says.

Patrick Kane's back — for a day, anyway. And now his name is part of Chicago lore forever. Aug. 8 was always a day of celebration of the career of Kane for Blackhawks fans — after all, he donned the No. 88 sweater for 16 seasons with the franchise. The official recognition came Friday from Ald. Brian Hopkins, 2nd, who officially proclaimed the date as Patrick Kane Day in Chicago, honoring the winger for the accolades he racked up with the organization — including three Stanley Cups. 'Fun to be back in Chicago, and I'm excited for the day.' Kane said. 'It's very special and I'm very thankful for the honor.' Kane busy day started at Johnny's Ice House West with a community youth hockey clinic. Young players wearing Blackhawks sweaters practiced drills led by the future Hall of Famer, who later signed various Bauer equipment for the kids. Kane's son was on the ice, too, even getting into a playful scuffle. Parents watched as Kane skated to both ends of the rink to help the young skaters. The kids started off passing the puck in a circle and then had skater-versus-goalie showdowns. Jane Domingo, 48, brought her son Ronan, 14, who will be a goalie at Loyola Academy. The Domingos started off as a football family, but Jane's Canadian husband showed them the hockey world. 'We actually watched game five of one of the (Hawks) Stanley Cups and we were able to see that live,' Domingo said. 'We've really all become a huge hockey family.' The number of hockey events such as Kane's youth skate have become a less common occurrence. Families attending were grateful for Kane and everyone who set up the event that let their kids perform with an icon. 'The hockey community as I have found is a very small one, so (it's great to) see guys who have made it giving back to the kids and showing them that hockey is fun,' Domingo said. 'To see the players in more of a human way is important not only for these kids but also to continue to grow the sport.' Skaters found it hard to contain their excitement about meeting Kane. Parents who usually get their kids' day started 'didn't have to wake them up,' which is understandable given his storied Hawks history. 'They were pretty hyped about it,' Cain Slager, 45, said about his two sons, Cain and Cody. 'I don't think they quite know how lucky they are, but it's definitely a great opportunity.' Added Antonio Sosa, whose three sons, Alejandro, Emilio (wearing a Connor Bedard sweater) and Santiago were on the ice: 'It's great to get them ice time, but it's also good to have role models they've watched play on TV, so they already have an inspirational feeling about it. My two sons (Alejandro and Emilio) play against each other harder than they do against other kids and they both were talking about how they were going to get on the ice and show off each other.' The two were as competitive as they said they would be on the ice, and it may have caught Kane's attention. 'A couple of them (showed out), there's some talent out there for sure,' Kane, 36, said. '(I) try to go around and talk to each kid and spend as much time with them as I can.' The rest of Patrick Kane Day involved an autograph signing at the Chicago Sports Museum at Water Tower Place and An Evening with Patrick Kane, hosted by sports broadcaster Pat Doyle, at Morgan MFG. Kane took some time to playfully rub the day in some former teammates' faces. 'Definitely (texted) Tazer (Jonathan Toews). I have the most shootout goals in NHL history, now he's coming back and he's probably coming back just so he can beat me,' Kane said of having 53 shootout goals compared with Toews' 52. 'I know he's going to get ahead of me.' Kane, nearing his third season with the Detroit Red Wings and 19th overall, is widely regarded as the greatest American-born player in NHL history. The 2007 No. 1 pick played 1,161 games with the Hawks, scoring 446 goals with 779 assists. He's a two-time Olympian and winner of the Hart, Art Ross, Calder Memorial and Conn Smythe trophies. He ranks 32nd in points (1,343), 27th in assists (851) and 51st in goals (492) all time. Kane recalled some of his favorite memories with the Hawks. 'We had a team bowling day after we won in 2013, the whole team out there bowling, it was just a great day,' Kane said. 'I went on stage with Jimmy Buffet three times — that's something you'd never think you'd be able to do because you're able to win with the Blackhawks.'
