NWC starts implementing 30 water and environmental projects worth SR2 billion in Riyadh

RIYADH — The National Water Company, represented by its Central Sector, has begun implementing 30 new water and sewage projects in the Riyadh region. These projects, having pipelines and networks with a total length of 1,955 kilometers, are estimated to cost nearly SR 2 billion.
This is part of the company's ongoing efforts to implement its strategic plans to develop infrastructure in both the sectors of water and environmental services. This is based on its initiatives to increase service coverage for its customers.
The company stated that it has begun implementing 16 water projects in Riyadh and several governorates in the region, including parts of Riyadh's neighborhoods: Al-Taawun, Janadriyah, Laban, Diriyah, and Dirab, as well as parts of the governorates of Al-Quwaiiyah, Afeef, Al-Dawadmi, Al-Muzahmiyya, Al-Rayn, Al-Kharj, Hawtah Bani Tamim, Al-Hariq, Al-Majma'ah, Al-Zulfi, Thadiq, and the towns of Al-Uyaynah and Al-Jubailah. These projects span a total of 1,192 kilometers of water lines and networks.
The National Water Company is also constructing 18 water reservoirs with a total capacity of approximately 85,000 cubic meters and pumping stations with a capacity exceeding 247,000 cubic meters per day, at a total cost of more than SR1 billion.
The company has begun implementing 14 sewage projects in the Riyadh region and several governorates, covering parts of the Al-Munsiyah, Al-Mu'aizilah, Al-Hazm, Namar, and Al-Awali neighborhoods. In addition, separate sewage lines have been implemented in several neighborhoods in Riyadh and parts of the governorates of Al-Zulfi, Al-Ghat, Shaqra, Al-Muzahmiyya, Al-Kharj, and Hawtah Bani Tamim. These lines and networks with a total length of 763 kilometers, along with pumping stations with a capacity of 117,000 cubic meters per day, will be implemented at a total cost of over SR902 million.
The company indicated that this new package of projects complements the 46 projects announced in May 2024, worth more than SR1.6 billion, in addition to the 20 projects announced in August 2024, worth approximately SR1 billion.

Saudi authorities pump nearly 1 million cubic meters of water to serve Hajj pilgrims
MAKKAH: Saudi water authorities have provided nearly a million cubic meters of water to serve the 1.4 million Muslim pilgrims participating in the Hajj since Wednesday. The National Water Company said that it pumped more than 980,633 cubic meters of water to key holy sites visited by pilgrims, including Makkah, Madinah, Mina, Mount Arafat and Muzdalifah. The Saudi Water Authority, a government body overseeing water operations in the Kingdom, said that providing water to pilgrims was one of its 24-hour continuous tasks during the Hajj season. On Thursday, it presented its comprehensive water supply chain plan, which begins with seawater desalination, undergoes transportation and treatment, and ends with distribution, reuse and irrigation. An interactive presentation, 'The Story of Water in Hajj,' was shown in numerous languages at the Hajj Media Hub, an integrated media center supporting journalists covering Hajj, in the Makkah Chamber Exhibition and Events Center. It showcased advanced technologies for water desalination, storage, transportation and treatment, along with smart operations and sustainability solutions, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Arabia to host second WTO regional trade policy course in 2025
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The General Authority for Foreign Trade (GAFT) held a virtual meeting with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to discuss preparations for the second edition of the Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC), scheduled to take place in the Kingdom in 2025. Deputy Governor for Shared Services Nasser Al-Dughaither, represented GAFT in the meeting. The meeting, included GAFT's Director General of Human Resources Hamoud Al-Malki and Director of Talent and Development Badr Al-Ajlan, focused on enhancing cooperation to organize the RTPC, improving the course's quality and outcomes, and developing specialized workshops for stakeholders involved in trade negotiations. These efforts aim to deepen participants' understanding of WTO agreements, rules, and procedures. Al-Dughaither emphasized that Saudi Arabia's three-year hosting of the RTPC reflects its global economic leadership, particularly in the Middle East, and aligns with national goals to empower regional trade policymakers and elevate their capacity to meet international trade standards. He expressed optimism about the upcoming edition, building on the success of the previous course, which featured robust scientific content and active participant engagement. The first edition of the RTPC was hosted in Saudi Arabia from October 13 to December 5, 2024, in partnership with King Saud University and the WTO. It saw participation from around 25 government officials representing nine countries, along with 12 Saudi government entities, covering over 24 training topics.

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — In a move that highlights Saudi Arabia's growing prominence in global pharmaceutical governance, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been officially elected to the Management Committee of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA). The authority has thus become the sixth regulatory authority worldwide to join this prestigious global medical body. This election marks a pivotal milestone for both Saudi Arabia and the international scientific community, reflecting global confidence in the SFDA's regulatory excellence and the Kingdom's strategic role in advancing international harmonization in drug safety and medical product oversight. MedDRA, developed by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), is a globally recognized standard for coding and analyzing safety data across the lifecycle of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products. It plays a central role in regulatory communication, post-market surveillance, clinical trial reporting, and signal detection. SFDA's election to the MedDRA Steering committee was confirmed during the ICH Management Committee meeting held in Madrid, Spain, from May 11–12, 2025. With this appointment, SFDA joins a group of regulators, including the European Commission, U.S. FDA, UK MHRA, Health Canada, Japan's MHLW and PMDA, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), which participates as an observer. Among its most impactful contributions is the linguistic and technical leadership demonstrated in the translation and validation of over 20,000 MedDRA terms into Arabic—a landmark initiative completed between May and October 2022.
