Gauteng principal stabbed, six West Ridge learners suspended after viral fight

A principal at a school in Gauteng was stabbed while trying to defuse a violent clash between learners from two different schools on Monday.
The clashes were between learners from West Ridge High School and Hoërskool Roodepoort.
The Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has condemned the incident.
According to the Department, the clash stems from a violent altercation between learners on Friday, August 15, which was filmed and went viral on social media.
By Monday, the matter had escalated when a group of West Ridge learners allegedly sought revenge and went to Hoërskool Roodepoort, where they attacked learners and pelted cars with stones.
While trying to defuse the situation, the principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort was stabbed and rushed to the hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged.
Three learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort who sustained serious injuries are receiving medical care.
The Department has confirmed six Grade 12 learners (boys) from West Ridge High School who will be served with suspension letters on Tuesday.

The suspension will restrict them from attending school for seven days pending their appearance before the disciplinary committee.
Further suspensions may be effected as the verification process continues.
The Department will also be deploying its psycho-social support team to visit both schools.
'It is completely unacceptable that such violence has spilled into our schools, where the safety of both learners and educators has now been compromised. It is even more disturbing that a principal, in her efforts to protect learners, was harmed in the process. We will not allow violence and intimidation to take root in our schools. Law enforcement must ensure that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions. Our schools must remain centres of safety, learning, and growth, not battlegrounds,' Chiloane said.
The Department has also engaged with the SAPS to support both schools in enhancing safety and requested them to conduct unannounced search-and-seizure operations.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has praised the South African Police Service (Saps) for arresting five pupils and a parent at Tsakane Secondary School on Thursday. This followed a wave of violent and disruptive incidents that have rocked the school. Series of disruptive incidents The pupils allegedly pelted stones at newly replaced doors during Grade 12 camps and set fires in the school toilets. On Wednesday, the group reportedly threatened staff and pupils with knives, blocked passageways and extorted money and cellphones during school hours. One of the arrested pupils, previously suspended for assaulting another student with a chair, reportedly returned to school forcefully, ignoring disciplinary procedures. Teachers have expressed fear for their safety, with some unable to resume classroom duties due to ongoing intimidation. The arrested parent is alleged to have encouraged the disruptive behaviour. 'Every pupil has a right to quality education, and every teacher has a right to a safe working environment. We commend the Saps for taking decisive action and assure the community of Tsakane that order will be restored,' Chiloane said. In response to the trauma experienced by the school community, the GDE plans to deploy psychosocial support teams to assist affected pupils, while employee wellness units will focus on supporting teachers. Didiza defends parliamentary legal services amid Mkhwanazi inquiry scrutiny

Image: Supplied National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has come to the defence of the parliamentary legal services after it came under scrutiny in the Ad Hoc Committee inquiring into the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. This comes after members of the inquiry were unhappy with remarks made by a member of the legal team that the allegations made by Mkhwanazi were technically not evidence. The remarks have been used as one of the motivations by some MPs to call for the appointment of an external legal counsel to lead evidence in the inquiry. On Thursday, Didiza said she noted with concern certain remarks made during proceedings of the Ad Hoc Committee, questioning the competence and integrity of the legal team assigned to support the committee. High Court mandates evaluation of pit bull dogs following alarming attacks in Caledon
A pitbull owner will have to deliver her three dogs to the local municipal pound to have them evaluated following three attacks at her home. Image: FILE The owner of two Pit Bull Terriers and a mixed breed dog has been ordered by the Western Cape High Court to deliver her dogs to the local pound for evaluation after the court found the dogs pose a risk to the public. The evaluation was necessitated following attacks on people who visited the private property from which a salon is run. Despite the dogs ordinarily being kept secure, in the backyard of their Caledon home, the court found they do, however, from time to time attack members of the public or visitors to Romanda Marais' property. Marais is a businesswoman and owner of a nail salon run from a wendy house on the property. On three occasions, the dogs attacked visitors to the property and their injuries necessitated hospitalisation of the victims for an extended period. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Judge Daniel Thulare ordered that Marais deliver the dogs to the Theewaterskloof Municipal Pound by August 26. If the dog owner fails to do so, the Theewaterskloof Municipality was authorised to impound them as set out in the Impoundment By-Law and to process the dogs in accordance with the law. Marais' attorney, Nazeer Parker, confirmed that he would consult with his client by the end of this week for them to decide on how they would proceed. In response to the judgment, Theewaterskloof Municipality said: 'The municipality notes the outcome of the recent court proceedings. Our responsibility remains to act in terms of the applicable by-laws and to prioritise public safety. We will therefore proceed in line with the court's decision.'
