New images show Manhattan-sized interstellar object that could be alien probe here to ‘destroy us': Harvard scientist

A Harvard physicist has asserted that new images of the Manhattan-sized interstellar object rocketing through our inner solar system back his claim that it's not a comet — but instead possibly an alien probe that may 'destroy us.'
Dr. Avi Loeb is pointing to apparent smoking guns emanating from 31/ATLAS — the object discovered in early July motoring past Earth which NASA officials have deemed a simple, though aberrational, comet.
'Usually, for comets, you see a tail trailing behind the object,' Loeb told CNN Thursday.
'Here, the glow is actually in front of it. We've never seen such a thing. A comet doesn't glow in front.'

Loeb then called the glow 'puzzling' in a blog post and implied that the object could be directed by an intelligent species with their sights set on our pale blue dot.
'It may come to save us or destroy us. We'd better be ready for both options and check whether all interstellar objects are rocks.'
Loeb cited two new images from The Hubble Space Telescope that show a concentration of light in front of the interstellar rock.
The images, taken on July 21, represent the most recent publicly available data on the 31/ATLAS.
In a blog post Wednesday, the theoretical astrophysicist wrote, 'The existence of a glow ahead of 31/ATLAS but no evidence of gas molecules is puzzling.'
Loeb further reiterated claims made in a paper last month regarding the object's suspiciously specific flight path through our inner solar system.

'It lies in the plane of the orbits of the planets around the sun to within five degrees,' Loeb explained to CNN.
'It will arrive closest to the sun when the Earth is on the opposite side. We won't be able to observe it. But that's the perfect time for it to maneuver.'
In his recent paper, Loeb suggested that the pathway is ideal for observing and measuring the motion of the spheres in our solar system.

The object will come closest to the Sun on Halloween and the intervening time will provide the best opportunity to glean information from the object.
'We will have a better assessment of this probability within a month or two, once 31/ATLAS gets brighter and easier to observe as it approaches the Sun,' Loeb wrote in a blog post last week.

Astronomers have discovered the oldest and most distant black hole — a behemoth that likely formed at the dawn of the universe, more than 13 billion years ago. The black hole lies at the center of a galaxy known as CAPERS-LRD-z9. Both cosmic objects are thought to have formed around 13.3 billion years ago, or just 500 million years after the big bang that created the universe. (The big bang theory suggests the universe started as an ultradense, extremely hot point that rapidly expanded out in all directions in a chaotic event some 13.8 billion years ago.) The black hole discovery, described in a study published Wednesday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, could shed light on the universe's earliest days and provide insight into how black holes and galaxies evolved. Light takes time to travel across space, which means observing distant objects in the cosmos is a bit like accessing a portal back in time, said Anthony Taylor, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin who led the study's international team of scientists. 'When we look at objects that are very, very far away, it has taken that light billions upon billions of years to reach us,' he said. 'So in reality, we're seeing these objects as they were in the early universe.' As far as black holes go, this one is huge, according to the researchers. It's estimated to be up to 300 million times the size of the sun, with a mass equivalent to that of half the stars in its galaxy. It's also roughly 10 times more massive than the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, Taylor said. Taylor and his colleagues found the black hole in observations of the outermost reaches of the universe from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. The researchers used a technique known as spectroscopy, which splits light into different wavelengths and colors, similar to how a prism separates sunlight into the colors of the rainbow.

As human-spaceflight missions grow longer and travel farther from Earth, keeping crews healthy gets more challenging. Astronauts on the International Space Station can depend on real-time calls to Houston, regular cargo deliveries of medicines, and a quick ride home after six months. All of that may soon change as NASA and its commercial partners, like Elon Musk's SpaceX, look to conduct longer-duration missions that would take humans to the Moon and Mars. That looming reality is pushing NASA to gradually make on-orbit medical care more 'Earth-independent.' One early experiment is a proof-of-concept AI medical assistant the agency is building with Google. The tool, called Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA), is designed to help astronauts diagnose and treat symptoms when no doctor is available or communications to Earth are blacked out. The multi-modal tool, which includes speech, text and images, runs inside Google Cloud's Vertex AI environment. The project is operating under a fixed-price Google Public Sector Subscription agreement, which includes the cost for cloud services, the application development infrastructure and model training, David Cruley, customer engineer at Google's Public Sector business unit, told TechCrunch. NASA owns the source code to the app and has helped fine-tune the models. The Google Vertex AI platform provides access to models from Google and other third parties. The two organizations have put CMO-DA through three scenarios: an ankle injury, flank pain, and ear pain. A trio of physicians, one being an astronaut, graded the assistant's performance across the initial evaluation, history-taking, clinical reasoning, and treatment. The trio found a high degree of diagnostic accuracy, judging the flank pain evaluation and treatment plan to be 74% likely correct; ear pain, 80%; and 88% for the ankle injury. The roadmap is deliberately incremental. NASA scientists said in a slide deck about the effort they are planning on adding more data sources, like medical devices, and training the model to be 'situationally aware' – that is, attuned to space medicine-specific conditions like microgravity. Cruley was vague about whether Google intends to pursue regulatory clearance to take this type of medical assistant into doctor's offices here on Earth, but it could be an obvious next step if the model is validated on orbit. The tool not only could improve the health of astronauts in space, 'but the lessons learned from this tool could also have applicability to other areas of health,' he said.
