Barbara Nicklaus hailed as 'angel of Muirfield Village' at Memorial honoree ceremony
DUBLIN, Ohio — The First Lady of Golf got an earful from the Golden Bear, and the musical serenade brought the house down at the Barbara Nicklaus honoree ceremony at Muirfield Village.
After several members of the Memorial Tournament Captains Club, including Jack Nicklaus II, spoke glowingly of Barbara, and before the honoree addressed the adoring crowd, a video was shown of Jack Nicklaus singing the Johnny Mathis song 'I married an angel.'
'You didn't know I was a singer, did you?' Nicklaus joked as the crowd of about 1,000 in stands behind the practice range roared.
Barbara thanked her husband – 'You're the best thing to ever happen to me' – and pointed out that Jack allowed her to be her own person.
Jack then stepped to the lectern and waxed poetic about his wife of almost 64 years, saying that 'for 65 years she's been my conscience. … She's a special lady.'
Barbara and Jack, both 85, met their freshman year at Ohio State, married in 1960 and moved to Florida in 1966. She is from Clintonville. He is from Upper Arlington.
Jack shared several stories about his wife, including how she has always been quite the prankster. One of her favorite moves was dropping rubber insects into friends' drinks. She once put rubber ants into Tom Watson's glass of ice tea.
Barbara kept her 'Phantom' identity under close wraps, but could not hide her generosity and sweet spirit.
'She never met a stranger,' Jack said, wiping away tears.
Jack II called his mother 'a reluctant honoree' who is 'most comfortable when those around her shine.'
Charlie Mecham, a longtime friend of the Nicklauses, said, 'If Jack is the heart (of the Memorial Tournament), Barbara is the soul.'
Barbara Nicklaus is known for her charitable work, most notably Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Florida.
After former Dispatch golf writer Bob Baptist was honored with the Memorial Golf Journalism Award, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan mentioned how Barbara Nicklaus has been the driving force behind the Memorial Tournament having donated $41 million back to Nationwide Children's Hospital through the years.
'You know the water cooler talk about who is the greatest of all time, well I'm in the camp that says Barbara is in the conversation,' Monahan said.

Scottie Scheffler breaks out in laughter after Peyton Manning's errant tee shot reportedly hits house
NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning was a source of entertainment for reigning PGA Championship winner Scottie Scheffler when the two partnered up for the 2025 Memorial Tournament Pro-Am this week. The two were all smiles as they walked the course at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin. Ohio on Wednesday, but it was Manning who was the subject of Scheffler's amusement after the Indianapolis Colts great took a wild shot that resulted in potentially some damage for one homeowner. Video shared on social media showed Manning yelling, "Fore!" several times after one of his tee shots. Almost immediately after the sound of the ball hitting something could be heard. The ball reportedly made contact with a house. The camera then pans over to Scheffler, who leans over in laughter. "Good morning, sir," he quipped. "That's too much." Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning didn't miss an opportunity to highlight his brother's errant shot, and shared the video on X. "I'm so proud," he said in the post. Scheffler is the defending champion at the Memorial and is attempting to join Tiger Woods as the only repeat winners at Muirfield Village. He entered the third round on Saturday in fourth place, three strokes behind leader Nick Taylor. Jack Nicklaus Gets Blunt: 'Ben Hogan Would Knock Your Teeth Out'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jack Nicklaus did not hold back when expressing his dislike for walk-and-talk interviews during golf rounds. During the second round of the Memorial Tournament, the 18-time major champion addressed the issue and made his opinion perfectly clear. As you may recall, the PGA Tour and its broadcast partners have increased mid-round on-course interviews as a strategy to boost fan engagement. However, they aren't succeeding with Nicklaus. The legendary player explained his point of view in his usual manner, drawing on his extensive experience. "I can't stand that, the interview on the golf course. Let me tell you how I think, how I feel," Nicklaus said, according to Sports Illustrated. "I mean, seriously, here's a guy who's leading the golf tournament, he's just hit the edge of the rough, he's got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you're talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing." Memorial Tournament host Jack Nicklaus speaks with the media prior to the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday 2025 at Muirfield Village Golf Club on May 27, 2025 in Dublin, Ohio. Memorial Tournament host Jack Nicklaus speaks with the media prior to the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday 2025 at Muirfield Village Golf Club on May 27, 2025 in Dublin, had a very long and successful career, Nicklaus did not lack an example from golf history to reinforce his criteria. "How would you think [Ben] Hogan would respond to that question? You would not have any teeth left if you did. He'd hit you right in the face with it." As you might expect, Nicklaus did not choose Ben Hogan as his example lightly. Hogan was known for his intense focus, privacy, and aloofness. He was also a perfectionist who demanded excellence from himself and those around him. However, it should be noted that this was his behavior during tournaments. His close friends and colleagues often described him as loyal, deeply thoughtful, and warm in his own way—just not overly expressive. It's also fair to say that Nicklaus is unhappy with walk-and-talk interviews but not with the golf media in general. In fact, ahead of the Memorial Tournament, he voiced his strong opinions about players who avoid post-round interviews: "I've always felt that you guys [the press] have a job to do -- and gals -- and for you to do your job you need to talk to me," Nicklaus said. "And whether I played well or whether I played poorly, if you still want to talk to me, I'll talk to you. And I always have." Jack Nicklaus is one of the most respected voices in golf, largely due to his extraordinary success as a player. However, he has also made a significant impact in other fields, including event planning and golf course design. More Golf: Scottie Scheffler lurking at Memorial despite poor putting performance

The British media outlet reported statements from people close to the couple who claim that things are moving full steam ahead: "She's very comfortable in his home now. She has all the security codes and can come and go as she pleases. She has total access to his life," the unnamed source told Mail Online. "She's got some clothes there, her toiletries, some cosmetics. She'll throw in a load of laundry while she's there, or help herself to something in the fridge. You'd think she owns the place!" the source added. The source offered a personal assessment pointing to a very favorable future for the relationship between Tiger and Vanessa: "She's really good for him to have around. And they're always together now. If things keep going the way they're going, they'll be living together by the end of the year. Tiger moves fast in that department."
