"We want dignity and upliftment for all castes," says BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi on caste census
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday criticised the Congress party, saying they have a habit of overlooking important issues.
He said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the NDA is focused on inclusive development.
During the press conference, Sudhanshu Trivedi said, 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, the cabinet has decided to conduct the census. In the press release, it was clearly stated that along with the census, for the first time in the history of independent India, a social, economic survey, and caste census will also be done. Congress party has a habit of overlooking important issues, whether it's Operation Sadbhav or CAA, etc ..Under PM Modi's leadership, the NDA stands for 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' (inclusive development).'
He said that the party supports dignity and progress for all castes, but accused the Congress of spreading false claims about the caste census.
He said Congress is wrongly using the example of Telangana, where only a survey is being done, not a full census.
Trivedi also alleged that Congress, which ruled India for decades, kept power within one family and failed to support real economic development.
'Regarding the caste census, we want dignity and upliftment for all castes. However, the Congress party has a contrasting approach. They're citing the example of Telangana, but they need to understand that it's a survey underway, not a census. The Congress party, which ruled this country for three decades and never allowed anyone outside the family to hold key positions, is now spreading false narratives against the caste census. Congress hasn't worked towards holistic economic growth in any development project,' he added
'The notification of the caste census is done by the centre. The state cannot conduct a caste census. So, the States can only conduct a survey. Wherever the Congress comes to power, their 'Khata Khat' model is becoming a big challenge for the country's development,' Trivedi said.
On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027.
As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
'The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026.
The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected.
Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected.
Caste enumeration will also be done during the census.
For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8th since independence.
The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications.
Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people.
Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (ANI)

CM Siddaramaiah must resign over RCB stampede: BJP
Mysuru: BJP functionaries staged a protest at Gandhi Square on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar over the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed the lives of 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans and left over 50 others injured. The protest was led by Krishnaraja MLA TS Srivatsa and former MLA L Nagendra, who is the city BJP unit chief, along with several senior party functionaries, including former corporators. Holding placards, the protesters squarely blamed the Congress govt for the mishap, alleging gross negligence in crowd management. Speaking to reporters, the MLA criticised the Congress-led state govt for alleged discrimination in the allocation of development funds. "Development funds are being distributed selectively, based on political affiliation. This is unacceptable. The chief minister must ensure equal treatment to all constituencies, regardless of party lines," he added. Nagendra held the govt directly accountable for the incident. "This tragedy is a result of complete administrative failure. The chief minister, deputy chief minister, and home minister G Parameshwara must take moral responsibility and resign immediately," he demanded.

India stands ‘isolated' over abstention on Gaza ceasefire in the UNGA, says Congress
Expressing concern over the flare-up in West Asia after the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Congress on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) urged the Union Government to work with partner countries to ensure an immediate ceasefire in the region. 'India should work with partners to bring an immediate halt to hostilities as any escalation can destabilise the entire region,' Congress Working Committee member Anand Sharma, who heads the party's foreign affairs department, told The Hindu. Mr. Sharma, who was part of the Narendra Modi government's diplomatic outreach in Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack, mounted a scathing criticism of India's abstention from a UN vote on a motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza. 'It is a humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded in Gaza, where people are facing collective retribution for their identity. It is indefensible that the land of Mahatma Gandhi doesn't stand for peace,' Mr. Sharma said. In fact, the abstention at the UN was cited as yet another example of 'weak diplomacy' by India. Congress general secretary (organisation) and Lok Sabha member from Kerala's Alappuzha seat, K.C. Venugopal, said India stood isolated among multilateral fora such as BRICS — a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — and SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organisation because of its stance. 'India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, India stands alone as the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO to abstain on a UNGA resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza,' he said on X last Saturday (June 14, 2025). Terming India's stance 'shameful and disappointing' in an X post the same day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Lok Sabha member from Kerala's Wayanad, said, '60,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed already, an entire population is being confined and starved to death, and we are refusing to take a stand'. 'This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. In fact, not only are we standing silent as Mr. (Benjamin) Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms,' Ms. Vadra added. Opinion: Israel's brutality in Gaza, India's pin-drop silence Pawan Khera, who heads the party's media and publicity wing, countered criticism from some quarters that Kerala's politics may determine the position of some of their MPs from the State. 'Congress's position on Israel-Gaza and Iran-Israel stems from our own legacy of anti-colonial solidarity, non-alignment, and a firm commitment to human rights and international law,' Mr. Khera said. Stressing on the role India can play in the Iran-Israel conflict, he said, 'Instead of seeing this moment as a strategic conundrum, India could see it as an opportunity — to act as a moral bridge between the warring sides, both of which happen to be our allies. That is what our legacy allows us to do, and what global leadership demands.'

G7 Summit in Canada: PM Narendra Modi to meet Carney to 'reset' ties
Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's crucial meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, where the two leaders are expected to 'reset' bilateral ties, he is also slated to have meetings with the leaders of Germany, Italy and Ukraine on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada's Kananaskis. However, Modi will not get an opportunity to discuss the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which is in the works, with Donald Trump as the US President left the G7 Summit early because of the unfolding tensions in West Asia. New Delhi was hopeful of a Modi-Trump meeting on the sidelines of the Summit, their first since February when the Indian PM had travelled to Washington to meet Trump weeks after the inauguration of the latter's presidency. It was also to be their first meeting after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor that India had launched against terror infrastructure in Pakistan. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he mediated between India and Pakistan to defuse the crisis, and that he used trade as a negotiating tool to clinch a peace deal. India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has consistently disputed these claims. A Modi-Trump meeting was crucial in the context of the two sides trying to conclude the BTA ahead of the July 9 deadline when higher US tariffs take effect. India isn't a member of the G7. Carney invited Modi to attend the Summit given India's size and importance as a major developing economy. Trump held a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the Summit but failed to reach an agreement on a trade package. The US President also met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and signed a document as a follow-up on the trade framework agreed in May. Modi landed in Calgary on Tuesday morning (IST), his first visit to Canada in over a decade. He will take part in the G7 Outreach Summit Session and hold bilateral meetings. 'Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South,' Modi said in a post on X on Tuesday morning. Modi is on a four-day tour to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia. "The PM will be participating in G7 discussions on the future of energy security, including diversification, technology, infrastructure and investment, to ensure access and affordability in a changing world. The PM will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X. Other issues likely to be discussed at the G7 Outreach Summit and during the PM's bilateral meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni include the situation in West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and ensuring the supply of critical minerals. According to government sources, a meeting is also planned with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President. The Kananaskis gathering on June 16-17 is Modi's 6th consecutive participation in the G7 Summit. The PM is also set to raise the issue of terrorism and seek support of G7 member countries in the context of the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22. Carney's invitation to Modi to attend the Summit signalled the new Canadian government's intent to repair ties with New Delhi that plummeted to an all-time low over the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The two sides are expected to announce a new initiative to combat cross-border crimes.
