BET+ dramedy 'Diarra from Detroit,' starring Diarra Kilpatrick renewed for 2nd season
Good news for "Diarra from Detroit."
The Motor City-set dramedy that's won praise and award nominations for its first season will be back for a second season, BET+ announced Monday.
The series stars and was created by Detroit actress Diarra Kilpatrick, who said in a news release on the renewal: "We're excited to be back and grateful for the opportunity to take viewers on another very wild, very Detroit adventure."
"Diarra from Detroit" became a critical hit for its sharp humor and blend of comedy and drama. It made the list of best news shows of 2024 in Deadline, Rolling Stone and Variety. It currently has a 100% positive rating among reviewers and a 93% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Since debuting in 2024, it received nominations from the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and the GLAAD Media Awards. This year, Kilpatrick won a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media for best actress in a breakthrough role for her performance in the series.
The first season followed Detroit public school teacher Diarra Brickland as she navigated a painful divorce and refused to believe that the man she met through a dating app has ghosted her. Turning amateur sleuth, her search for answers led her to a decades-old mystery involving the Detroit criminal underworld.
In a 2024 interview with the Detroit Free Press, Kilpatrick described herself as "a daughter of the city, through and through."
As an executive producer of the series (along with Kenya Barris of "Black-ish") and writer of the series, she made sure the first season was laced with Detroit references (though filming was done in New Jersey).
Kilpatrick, a half-sibling of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, traces her love for acting all the way back to seeing 'Dreamgirls' at the Fisher Theater when she was just 3. She considers participating in Detroit's Mosaic Youth Theater as a turning point in her life.
"Diarra from Detroit" cast members Bryan Terrell Clark, DomiNque Perry and Jon Chaffin will return for season two. Production on the second season and a premiere date will be announced later.

The new project is apparently not related to a much-discussed and since-delayed feature film based on Madonna's life. The project, which was being developed by Universal Pictures and set to star Ozark and Inventing Anna actress Julia Garner as the pop superstar, was put on an indefinite hold in 2023 as Madonna embarked on her Celebration World Tour. In 2024, however, Madonna sparked rumors that the film might be back in the works, when she shared a since-deleted photo of herself sitting at a typewriter working on a screenplay titled Who's That Girl — an apparent nod to her 1987 film and song of the same name. Still, Madonna herself floated the idea of creating a TV series about her life in November of last year, claiming that a number of 'producers and agents' told her that she wouldn't be able to make her film the way she wanted to. 'Downsize-down scale-think smaller-they say—I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged,' she wrote in a since-removed post, before asking her fans if they would prefer to see her story adapted into 'a series or a feature film.' Madame Web has firmly cemented itself as a disaster of a comic book movie. With a 12% Rotten Tomatoes score, a worldwide gross just over $100 million, and more memes than fans, it didn't exactly stick the landing. Dakota Johnson, the face of the film's chaos, recently did an interview with The Los Angeles Times, and when asked about the flop. Her response? A sharp laugh and: 'It wasn't my fault.' She went on to elaborate: 'There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. 'And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way. And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else.' That 'something else' ended up being a confusing mess of half-baked plot threads, bad dialogue, and Spider-Women with almost no Spider-ing. Johnson, who played Cassandra Webb, became the unwilling symbol of a movie that never really had a chance. Despite a cast that included Sydney Sweeney and Isabela Merced, the film felt like a product assembled in a boardroom with bullet points instead of a story. She added: 'I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time. I don't have a Band-Aid over it. 'There's no part of me that's like, 'Oh, I'll never do that again' to anything. I've done even tiny movies that didn't do well. Who cares?' Madame Web was once rumored to have ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, possibly featuring a young Peter Parker under the protection of Cassandra and the Spider-Women. Instead, audiences got a vague prequel with a pregnant Mary Parker whose storyline went nowhere and a plot that felt like it had been shredded in a multiversal blender. So, what really happened? Studio interference. Creative-by-committee. A genre machine trying to reverse-engineer another hit without understanding why the good ones work. Dakota Johnson may not have escaped the wreckage unscathed, but at least she's honest about the ride and ready to move on.
