Arrested from India-bound plane before take off: American couple jailed in Singapore for stealing Louis Vuitton, Dior products at airport

Time of Indiaa day ago
The American couple already boarded the Mumbai-bound plane from Changi Airport after stealing but were arrested before the plane could take off.
American nationals Kapadia Husain Zoher, 35, and Kapadia Amatullah, 30, were arrested at Changi Airport for stealing Louis Vuitton and Dior products amounting to more than $750 when they were in transit.
The dentist husband and the engineer wife were caught before their Mumbai-bound plane was about to take off, and they had already boarded the plane. Both of them are American nationals but probably of Indian-origin.
As they were waiting for their connecting flight to India on June 23, they visited two stores and stole the luxury products. While the husband was stealing, the wife kept a lookout.
On August 4, Kapadia Husain Zoher, the husband, was sentenced to 18 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a theft charge.
The wife, who also pleaded guilty to a similar charge, was sentenced to a week in jail.
At around 5pm on June 23, Kapadia Husain Zoher entered a Louis Vuitton store at the airport's Terminal 1, said State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) Ng Chee Wee. CCTV cameras inside the store caught him committing the offence, the court heard. The couple then went to Cosmetics & Perfumes by The Shilla at the airport's Terminal 3 shortly before 5.40pm that day.
Kapadia Husain Zoher then took a bottle of Dior Sauvage perfume worth around $160 and slipped it into his pocket, while his wife acted as a lookout. They left the scene soon after without paying for it, Straits Times reported.
'(Kapadia Husain Zoher) had stolen the case holder out of greed. He had a habit of overspending, and he did not want to pay for the case holder," SPO Ng said.
Both stolen items were recovered and returned to the respective stores.
Singapore has strict laws against theft, with offenders facing swift investigation and prosecution, especially in transit zones like Changi Airport.

NIA arrests two men for involvement in trafficking youth to US via dunki route

New Delhi, The National Investigation Agency on Thursday arrested two accused for involvement in trafficking of youth to the US via the infamous dunki route. NIA arrests two men for involvement in trafficking youth to US via dunki route The term dunki, believed to have originated from the word donkey, refers to an illegal pathway that immigrants take to enter countries like the United States without proper documentation. The accused, Ravi Kumar and Gopal Singh, were taken into custody during extensive searches at four locations in Haryana and Punjab, a statement issued by the NIA said. While two locations were searched in Haryana's Karnal district, NIA teams converged on one location each in Yamuna Nagar and Gurdaspur Thursday morning. The digital devices and other material seized during the searches is being examined for further evidence about the criminal conspiracy linked to the immigration racket, the probe agency said. NIA investigations revealed that Ravi and Gopal, both hailing from Karnal district, were part of a transnational syndicate that lured Indian citizens with false promises of legal travel to the US. "Gopal had conspired with Jai Kumar, another key accused, and Ravi in the illegal immigration of several victims. He not only managed hotel bookings and the travel itineraries of the victims but also acted as an agent for other co-victims," the statement said. He assisted other accused in collecting payments from the victims and their families, according to the NIA findings so far. The case relates to the illegal immigration to the US of Shubham Saini, a resident of Naraingarh, Haryana. In January, he was apprehended by US authorities at the border and deported to India. In his complaint to Naraingarh police, Saini had revealed that he was taken to the US through South and Central American countries. He was held in captivity abroad, and subjected to abuse and extortion at multiple stages, the NIA said, adding that a total of ₹42 lakhs was paid in parts by him and his family to the syndicate. The NIA is continuing with its investigation in the case, which has major international linkages, to identify and arrest others involved in the conspiracy, it added.
