Springbok forward Jasper Wiese's headbutt leads to four-match suspension

Washington Post6 days ago
MBOMBELA, South Africa — South Africa back-rower Jasper Wiese's headbutt cost him a four-match suspension on Tuesday.
Wiese deliberately knocked heads with Italy prop Danilo Fischetti on Saturday and was sent off with nearly an hour remaining. The Springboks still won 45-0.
Wiese will miss the Springboks' game against Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday and the first three rounds of the Rugby Championship in August and September.
They involve two home games against Australia and a test in New Zealand.
At his disciplinary hearing, Wiese accepted he committed foul play but not a red card offense. The panel disagreed.
Wiese's first international red card meant he missed a chance to play with his younger brother Cobus, who made his Springboks test debut against Italy in the second half.

Farrell keeps it in the family with Lions captaincy

Coach Andy Farrell has named his son Owen to captain the British and Irish Lions against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne on Tuesday. Playing his 20th match for the Lions on his fourth tour, Farrell will lead the Lions for the first time as the tourists turn out at Marvel Stadium in the last of their six tour matches. It's his first start since being drafted into the 2025 squad late as injury cover, with the 33-year-old coming off the bench in the Lions' one-sided win over the AUNZ invitational XV in Adelaide. The Lions are 6-0 on their Australian tour, including a 27-19 victory over the Wallabies in the first Test at Brisbane last Saturday. Backrower Ben Earl and inside backs Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith have been included in the reserves three days after being involved in the 23-man squad for the first Test. Former England captain Farrell will partner Irishman Jamie Osborne in the centres while Scotland No.9 Ben White will combine with England's Fin Smith in the halves. Blair Kinghorn will return from a knee injury to play fullback in an all-Scotland back three with wingers Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe. Welsh blindside flanker Jac Morgan will start, as will exciting young England No.8 Henry Pollock. Ireland centre Garry Ringrose has overcome concussion symptoms to take a spot on the bench. Jamie George will start at hooker after joining the tour group from Argentina after playing with England. Three other Scottish reinforcements -- lock Gregor Brown, hooker Ewan Ashman and prop Rory Sutherland - were named on the bench. Wallabies veteran Kurtley Beale will captain the inaugural First Nations and Pasifika team. Andy Farrell said the match would give all players a chance to push their case for selection for the final two Tests, the second of which comes on Saturday night at the MCG. "The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places," Farrell said in a statement "This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two Tests. "This group know the level of performance that we will require against a First Nations and Pasifika team that is packed with talent and power." Lions: Blair Kinghorn (Scotland), Darcy Graham (Scotland), Jamie Osborne (Ireland), Owen Farrell (England, captain), Duhan van der Merwe (Scotland), Fin Smith (England), Ben White (Scotland); Henry Pollock (England), Josh van der Flier (Ireland), Jac Morgan (Wales), Scott Cummings (Scotland), James Ryan (Ireland), Finlay Bealham (Ireland), Jamie George (England), Pierre Schoeman (Scotland). Reserves: Ewan Ashman (Scotland), Rory Sutherland (Scotland), Tom Clarkson (Ireland), Gregor Brown (Scotland), Ben Earl (England), Alex Mitchell (England), Marcus Smith (England), Garry Ringrose (Ireland).

British and Irish Lions: Owen Farrell captain for First Nations & Pasifika XV clash as Blair Kinghorn returns

Owen Farrell will lead the British and Irish Lions for the first time in Tuesday's match against the First Nations & Pasifika XV at Marvel Stadium. Farrell is given his maiden start of the tour 17 days after he joined the Lions squad as a call-up for Elliot Daly and forges a midfield partnership with fellow late arrival Jamie Osborne. The former England captain came on as a second-half replacement against AUNZ on July 12 and produced some eye-catching moments in attack as he blew away the cobwebs in his first appearance since May 4. It will be the first time in four tours that he has skippered the Lions and his selection presents the opportunity to play his way into contention for Saturday's second Test against the Wallabies. Blair Kinghorn has the chance to prove his fitness for the Melbourne Cricket Ground showdown after missing the series opener in Brisbane with a knee injury, lining up at full-back. Alex Mitchell is set to continue his remarkable run of having played in every match on tour after being picked on the bench, where he is joined by Ben Earl and Marcus Smith, who are also backing up, having been involved in Saturday's 27-19 win against Australia. Garry Ringrose has recovered from the concussion that forced him to miss out at Suncorp Stadium to secure a replacement's role for the final midweek game of the tour. The Ireland star was favourite to start the Test series at outside centre until he suffered his head injury, resulting in Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu being paired together in their tried and tested all-Scotland combination. There are three specialist opensides in the back row in Jac Morgan, Josh van der Flier and Henry Pollock, each of whom has an outside chance of winning a place on the bench for the second Test. Apart from Farrell and Osborne, there are seven further late additions to the squad involved in Darcy Graham, Ben White, Jamie George, Ewan Ashman, Rory Sutherland, Tom Clarkson and Gregor Brown. "This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two Tests," Lions head coach Andy Farrell said. "The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places and we want that to continue for the remaining two Tests. "This group know the level of performance that we will require against a First Nations Pasifika team that is packed with talent and power." Lions XV: B Kinghorn; D Graham, J Osborne, O Farrell, D van der Merwe; F Smith, B White; P Schoeman, J George, F Bealham, J Ryan, S Cummings, J Morgan, J van der Flier, H Pollock Replacements: E Ashman, R Sutherland, T Clarkson, G Brown, B Earl, A Mitchell, M Smith, G Ringrose

Kotoni Staggs lifts lid on eye-opening clash with Reece Walsh ahead of Eels game

Kotoni Staggs has moved to rubbish any drama surrounding his on-field clash with teammate Reece Walsh as the Brisbane Broncos look to continue their momentum against the Eels this weekend. Walsh was seen spraying Staggs after his teammate dropped the ball in good attacking position against the Titans in round 19. There were suggestions there was frustration amongst the playing group after Walsh and Staggs' moment during the victory against their Queensland rivals. The fullback looked like he was going to put Staggs through a gap when the centre dropped a pretty straightforward pass. The two were seen having a go at each other, although most fans pointed out the clash with Staggs simply shows the duo care about the result. While Staggs and Walsh clearly get along, plenty was made of the footage after the win. And having enjoyed a weekend off with the bye, the Broncos are set to return rested and ready to close the gap on the top four. And Staggs has praised Walsh's demand for improvement within the playing group, which is what makes him one of the best fullbacks in the game. But he also suggested it's this same attribute, which often prompts the leaders to step in. "Walshy is someone I love playing with. He is a competitor and he doesn't like losing," Staggs said with a grin. "So when things don't go his way he does blow up a bit. We've just got to calm him down at times." Walsh and Staggs combined for a long-range try later in the game with the duo putting the moment to rest. And Staggs said this is what makes Walsh great. "You've got to be in the right position at the right time, which I was. I put a bit of footwork on and he was pushing up through the middle as a good fullback does and got the try for us," Staggs said. At the time, coach Michael Maguire was quick to defend Walsh and claimed the scenes showed how much he cared about winning. "Reece, he loves his footy and he's striving to continually be the best, and that's all the boys and that's the perfection they're chasing," Maguire said. "Whether or not it's him trying to get the ball to him early or not, Reece does wear his heart on his sleeve and that's why we love him and the boys love playing with him. At times he's going to execute something and other times he's going to be working out how he gets it done. So I think as long as he keeps competing the way he is, the boys love playing with him." Brisbane Broncos seeking top four position The Broncos have turned around a mid-season slump to climb back to fifth on the ladder. Maguire was facing real pressure as coach after four-straight losses at one stage, but the team has responded with five consecutive wins. While they remain four points behind the Warriors, they will fancy their opportunity to get two points against the Eels this weekend. And Staggs feels the team have become closer across the season as they block out the noise. "I just think we have gotten closer," Staggs said. "We are all buying into what is going on at training and we have shifted some things around as well. We do have the team to win the premiership. We just have to believe in one another and keep turning up for one another. We have strike players on the field and we have just got to get the ball in their hands."
