Shane Bieber to start for Blue Jays on Friday in Miam
August 18 - Starting pitcher Shane Bieber, who won the 2020 Cy Young Award, is slated to make his debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, manager John Schneider informed the assembled media before his team's series with the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. The Blue Jays will remain on the road and will take on the Miami Marlins on Friday. "You can allow yourself to get pretty excited when you're adding a guy of that caliber," Schneider said. "Once you get to know him, he's the definition of a pro. He fits right in with the guys that we have already in our rotation. He's really, really smart. He understands what he's good at and what he's trying to do. He's confident right now." The Blue Jays acquired the 30-year-old right-hander from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline on July 31 in exchange for minor league pitcher Khal Stephen. Bieber has not pitched in the major leagues since April 2, 2024. He threw six scoreless innings against Seattle but reported right elbow discomfort after the game. Four days later, the Guardians announced that he would undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Bieber returned to the mound on May 31, 2025, with the Guardians' rookie-ball affiliate in the Arizona Complex League. He has made seven starts for Cleveland and Toronto minor league squads, recording a 1.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, fanning 37 batters, while walking only two in 29 innings of work. In seven seasons with Cleveland, Bieber owned a record of 62-32, with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. He won the Cy Young Award in 2020, when the season was truncated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bieber posted an 8-1 record with a league-best 1.63 ERA. He struck out an MLB-best 122 batters in 77 1/3 innings. Bieber is joining a strong rotation which currently features Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt. --Field Level Media

Report: Bobby Webster absorbs Raptors' team president duties
August 18 - The Toronto Raptors are adding president of basketball operations duties onto the plate of general manager Bobby Webster, ESPN reported Monday. Webster will continue to serve as the team's GM as well. Webster, 40, takes over the team's top front office role from Masai Ujiri, who was fired on June 27. Ujiri hired Webster in 2013 as the team's vice president of strategy. A native of Hawaii, Webster was hired by the NBA in 2006 and advised teams on salary cap and luxury tax details. He remained with the league until moving to the Raptors. In June of 2017, Webster was promoted to Raptors general manager in place of Jeff Weltman. He was the NBA's youngest general manager at the time at age 32, and two seasons later, the franchise won its lone NBA title. Toronto has made the playoffs just twice since winning the championship in 2019 and has not advanced to the postseason in any of the past three seasons. The Raptors finished 30-52 last season, slightly better than their 25-57 mark in 2023-24 under head coach Darko Rajakovic. --Field Level Media

Such a scenario would ensure the Scots would be in the top band of seeds for the tournament which is being expanded from 20 teams to 24. The competing nations will be drawn into six pools of four, with the top two from each pool and the four best third-placed sides progressing to a round of 16. As things stand, Scotland would be in the second band of seeds. Townsend's side have failed to progress beyond the group stage at the last two World Cups and the head coach is looking to minimise the risk of another early exit by ensuring they have the highest possible seeding ahead of the draw. Australia, who had been eighth, climbed up to sixth place, without Argentina dropping to seventh. New Zealand, who beat Argentina 41-24 in Cordoba in the other Rugby Championship round-one game, have returned to the summit for the first time since November 2021. Ireland are now second. None of the European teams were in action, but the Irish still climbed a place because South Africa lost ranking points. France are fourth. Round two of the Rugby Championship this weekend sees a repeat of the opening fixtures, with South Africa hosting Australia in Cape Town and Argentina taking on New Zealand in Buenos Aires. Argentina's heavy defeat by the All Blacks in Cordoba means Scotland are now only 0.03 of a point behind the Pumas. Another loss this weekend could see the Scots regain seventh place.
