iPhone 17 Pro Max just leaked ahead of Apple event — design, battery and a huge camera upgrade

Tom's Guide3 days ago
A pair of recent leaks regarding the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max hint at potential upgrades for Apple's high-end phone, but one of them may be more realistic than the other.
The more controversial leak comes from the Korean blogging platform Naver, where tipster yeux1122 posted alleged CAD renders of the Pro Max that might reveal internal components for the device, including the battery.
According to images from their blog, the renders reveal the battery size and shape, a solid aluminum structure, and the location of the MagSafe magnet. Based on these images, it appears the battery will be bigger, potentially around 5,000 mAh, which would put the iPhone 17 Pro Max on par with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.
The MagSafe coil in the renders looks to be in a different place compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which suggests a reconfiguration of the internal layout to support new hardware like a vapor-chamber cooling system.
Yeux1122, in my experience, is very hit or miss with their leaks, and I am taking this leak with a heaping spoonful of salt. One regular Apple leaker on X, Unknownz21, stated that the renders were not an Apple CAD. Another regular Apple rumormonger, ShrimpApplePro, also found the images to be problematic.
'You can tell this is just a poorly make [sic] cad by some random people, not an actual internals of the new iphone,' they posted on X.
On the other hand, a fresh leak from Instant Digital on Weibo seems more credible based on their track record with rumors.

They recently hinted that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a new telephoto camera (via Android Headlines), making it one of the 'most powerful telephoto' lenses on the market. Reportedly, the Pro Max could feature a massive 8x optical zoom, a big leap from the fixed 5x zoom on its predecessor.
This new system would also involve a moving lens system, meaning that it could switch between different focal lengths. It would give shooters more flexibility when zooming, but also make photos at various focal lengths have better image quality.
Apple is reportedly upping the resolution of the telephoto lens to 48MP. Combined with the bigger optical zoom, it could explain the redesigned and larger camera array on the next high-end iPhone.
This contradicts previous rumors that the camera would only support 3.5x optical zoom and another that suggested the iPhone 17 Pro would get 8x optical zoom. This is not a settled rumor.
We'll know more in September during the iPhone 17 launch event, when Apple is expected to reveal the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

Meta's first Android-based AR glasses could be landing very soon at an irresistible price

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Meta's first augmented reality glasses are reportedly launching next month. These glasses, codenamed 'Hypernova,' will offer a barebones interface with basic support for notifications and Meta's AI. The glasses are reported to launch at just $800, to rake in far more orders than Apple's extravagantly priced Vision Pro. Apple took a leap of faith when it first showcased its $3,500 extended reality headset, the Vision Pro, in 2023. Despite the slow rollout and extensive marketing, the headset failed to take off, despite its bragworthy features. Time and again, experts have blamed its towering price for the lack of public interest, and that is a lesson for other companies, including Meta, which is also gearing to launch its AR glasses soon. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Meta is set to launch its first commercial pair of augmented reality (or AR) glasses very soon, for a much more attractive price than expected earlier. In the latest Power On newsletter (paywalled), Gurman revealed that the launch is set for September, while the glasses, codenamed 'Hypernova,' will be available for $800, a 20% reduction from the previously suggested $1,000 price tag. The reason behind the price cut is Meta's likely decision to lower its profit margin to increase demand. However, Gurman cautions that while $800 is the probable base price of the headset, any modifications in the form of prescription lenses or changes to the style could easily increase prices. Meta's Hypernova will only offer barebones functionality of smart glasses, Gurman notes. It will likely serve as the interim product ahead of Meta's actual release of the Orion, its full-fledged AR glasses. As previously shared by Gurman, Hypernova will feature a monocular display limited to a small section of the right lens. This section will display key information, such as notifications from the linked smartphone or cues from the built-in Meta AI app. This is done so the information does not obstruct the users' field of view and is only visible when they look down. While Hypernova is said to run a special version of Android and have a few apps pre-installed, it will lack any regular Android apps or support for an app store. The glasses will pair with a 'neural' wristband that uses electromyography (EMG) to identify hand gestures and other movements. Meta has previewed the same wristband with a prototype of its Orion AR headset, which is expected to be available in 2027. Meanwhile, the pair launching more recently is also said to feature touch-sensitive areas on the temples for controls besides the wristband. Lastly, Meta is reportedly already working on a second-generation Hypernova with binocular vision, but with a similar minimal interface. This is likely to be available sometime in 2027 and will be another key stepping stone to Meta's success with a pair of glasses with broader support for apps and immersive experience. Follow

Huawei Pura 80 Ultra Crushes iPhone 16 Pro Max In Camera Rankings

Key Takeaways Huawei's latest flagship smartphone, the Pura 80 Ultra, has claimed the top spot in Dxomark's camera rankings, significantly outperforming the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Google Pixel 9 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. With an overall Dxomark score of 175 points, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra decisively dominates the iPhone 16 Pro Max (161 points), Pixel 9 Pro XL (160 points), and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (151 points). Notably, the Pura 80 Ultra matches the iPhone 16 Pro Max in Dxomark's video tests, a category where Apple traditionally excels. However, like its predecessor, it's hard to recommend the Pura 80 Ultra to anyone living in the US or Europe, at least as a primary device. Huawei Pura 80 Ultra Key Camera Innovations With the Pura 80 Ultra, Huawei has once again prioritized cutting-edge camera hardware, taking a radically different approach than industry leaders Apple, Google, and Samsung, which prioritize thinness, style, and ergonomics with a greater reliance on digital processing enabled by considerably more processor hardware. The Pura 80 Ultra boasts several cutting-edge hardware features, including: The Pura 80 Ultra's camera system combines a 50-megapixel primary sensor with a 40-megapixel 1/2.8' ultrawide sensor (with an f/2.2 aperture lens) and a 50-megapixel 1/2.8' telephoto camera sensor offering interchangeable 3.7x f/2.4 and 9.4x f/3.6 optical telephoto lenses. The innovative dual-periscope zoom system utilizes a tiny, movable prism to direct light to either the 3.7x or 9.4x telephoto lens, saving space and reducing costs by using a single sensor to serve both. For a more detailed explanation of this innovative system, see Forbes contributor Prakhar Khanna's article. The variable aperture feature, available on the primary lens, allows the camera to adapt to lighting conditions just like a stand-alone compact camera. Setting the aperture to f/1.6 captures the maximum amount of light when shooting in low-light situations and provides a blurred background with natural bokeh that's less reliant on software processing for portrait mode shots. The primary lens features a variable aperture (f/1.6 - f/4.0) that allows the camera to adapt to varying lighting conditions, similar to a traditional compact camera. At f/1.6, the lens maximizes light intake for low-light shots and creates a naturally blurred background (bokeh) for better-looking portraits. Conversely, closing the aperture to f/4.0 increases depth of field, ensuring sharpness in group photos. This adjustable aperture is advantageous in conjunction with the Pura 80 Ultra's 1-inch type sensor, which typically results in a shallower depth of field due to its increased size. Huawei Pura 80 Ultra: Impossible To Recommend? Despite its impressive camera capabilities, the Pura 80 Ultra, like all of the company's smartphones, faces significant challenges in the US and European markets due to limited availability and potentially deal-breaking feature omissions forced by US trade restrictions. Key drawbacks for potential buyers in the US and Europe include: Workarounds exist for many apps, but reliance on third-party app stores and the lack of Google Wallet and reliable mobile banking remain powerful purchasing deterrents. But I Still Want One There is, of course, another option: For photography enthusiasts, the Pura 80 Ultra can serve well as a dedicated camera alongside your existing device. It's not unusual for people to carry both a phone and a camera, so why should it matter if that camera is another smartphone? It could be argued that the Pura 80 Ultra's best-in-class camera exists partly because of the US's trade restrictions rather than despite them. Without access to the world's fastest processors, Huawei is compelled to rely on state-of-the-art camera hardware instead. Apple Announces Major Change to Apple Watch Starting Aug. 14

On Thursday, Aug. 14, Apple announced a redesigned blood oxygen feature for select Apple Watch users following an intellectual property lawsuit over the watch's capability. Why Was the Apple Watch in Question? In late 2023, the International Trade Commission found that Apple's blood oxygen sensors infringed on intellectual property from Masimo, a medical technology company. The tech company paused the sale of some of its watches and began selling modified versions of the wearable device without a blood oxygen feature. Apple Announces Change to its Watch Apple announced the company will introduce a redesigned blood oxygen feature for some Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users through an iPhone and Apple Watch software update coming later today. Users with models noted above will receive access to the redesigned blood oxygen feature by updating their paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1. Once the update is complete, sensor data from the blood oxygen app on Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone, and results can be viewed in the respiratory section of the Health app. Apple revealed the update was made possible by a recent U.S. Customs ruling. Apple's teams work tirelessly to create products and services that empower users with industry-leading health, wellness, and safety features that are grounded in science and have privacy at the core," the company said in a statement. "Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 also offer users irregular rhythm notifications, the ECG app, Sleep Apnea Notifications, Fall Detection, sleep tracking, wrist temperature sensing, the Vitals app, the Noise app, the Medications app, and the Mindfulness app, among many other helpful tools, helping users live a healthier life." Users can access the new data as soon as today, Aug. 14 - once they've updated the Announces Major Change to Apple Watch Starting Aug. 14 first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 14, 2025
