In Sarawak, e-hailing driver accused of killing Nurul Asikin to return to court May 26, pending WhatsApp forensics
KUCHING, 24 April — The Magistrates' Court here today set May 26 for the mention of the case involving an e-hailing driver charged with the murder of Nurul Asikin Lan, whose body was found in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan, last December.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali set the date following a request by the prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei, as the prosecution was still waiting for the forensic report regarding the WhatsApp messages between the suspect and victim.
She also told the court that the prosecution had received the reports on the victim's deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis and post-mortem.
Zakwan Mokhtar, 24, unrepresented, is charged with causing the death of Nurul Asikin, 29, before her body was discovered in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, at 9.10pm on December 14 last year.
The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides death or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years. If not sentenced to death, he can be whipped with not less than 12 lashes, upon conviction. — Bernama

Religious school warden gets 6 years' jail, whipping for sodomy, sexual assault

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A hostel warden at a religious boarding school was sentenced to six years' jail and two strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to three of 15 charges of sexual assault, sodomy and unnatural intercourse against seven boys between 2023 and January this year. Seremban sessions court judge Surita Budin imposed the sentence on Khairi Fitri Baharom, 38, after the charges were read out separately, reported Bernama. The court also ordered the sentence to begin from the date of his arrest on May 25, and for him to undergo counselling sessions and police monitoring for a year after his release. Khairi was accused of committing sexual assault against a boy aged 12 years and four months at around 11pm between Dec 15 and 20, 2023, at a warden's room in the school in Jempol. He was also accused of sodomising the boy at around 10.30pm on Jan 7 this year and committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent with another boy aged 10 years, seven months at 5pm, between April and December 2024 at the same location. The sexual assault charge was under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), read together with Section 16(1) of the same act, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping if convicted. The sodomy and carnal intercourse charges were under Section 377C of the Penal Code, which provides for five to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping if convicted. Khairi, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a light sentence as he had to care for his mother. However, deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni asked for a sentence that was commensurate with the crime as the victims were children and the accused was responsible for their care and protection. Khairi pleaded not guilty to 12 other charges against the same victims and five other boys aged between eight and 12 years and nine months, allegedly committed between 2024 and Jan 24 this year at the same location and at a house in Jalan Air Melana, Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan. The charges are under Sections 14(a) and 14(b) of Act 792 for sexual assault, and Section 377C of the Penal Code for carnal intercourse against the order of nature.

Gerik bus crash: Teacher investigated over offensive comments made on victims
IPOH: An investigation is underway against a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik. Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a police report was filed on Wednesday (June 11) at about 4.40pm concerning a Facebook post by a user named "Khalid Yunus," which contained distasteful comments regarding the university students involved in the fatal crash. The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, he stated on Thursday (June 12). He also urged the public not to share content that could cause distress or disrupt public peace. The Facebook post sparked public outrage after alleging that the 15 students died in disgrace. It further claimed that the victims were not among the faithful, as they had passed away while still owing debt to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation. The post has since been deleted, and the teacher involved has issued a public apology, claiming to suffer from schizophrenia. Perak education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said on Wednesday (June 11) that initial investigations confirmed the Facebook account responsible for the insensitive post belonged to a teacher at the school. Temerloh accident: Driver of car involved in fatal accident remanded for seven days
TEMERLOH: The car driver believed to be involved in the fatal accident that killed two teenage girls at the traffic light intersection on Jalan Tengku Ismail here Wednesday (June 11) has been remanded for seven days. Temerloh District Police Chief ACP Mazlan Hassan said the 38-year-old man, whose address is in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, was detained starting today until June 18. "The suspect was remanded to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement Thursday (June 12). Earlier, Mazlan was reported to have said that a search of the car found plastic packets suspected to contain syabu and heroin drugs estimated to be worth more than RM6,000. In the incident around 11pm, motorcyclist Nur Irdina Shaffiya Muhammad Nazri and her pillion rider, Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both aged 18, died at the scene, believed to have been hit by a car while they had stopped at a red traffic light. – Bernama
