Gerik bus crash: Teacher investigated over offensive comments made on victims
IPOH: An investigation is underway against a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik.
Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a police report was filed on Wednesday (June 11) at about 4.40pm concerning a Facebook post by a user named "Khalid Yunus," which contained distasteful comments regarding the university students involved in the fatal crash.
The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, he stated on Thursday (June 12).
He also urged the public not to share content that could cause distress or disrupt public peace.
The Facebook post sparked public outrage after alleging that the 15 students died in disgrace.
It further claimed that the victims were not among the faithful, as they had passed away while still owing debt to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation.
The post has since been deleted, and the teacher involved has issued a public apology, claiming to suffer from schizophrenia.
Perak education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said on Wednesday (June 11) that initial investigations confirmed the Facebook account responsible for the insensitive post belonged to a teacher at the school.
The state Education Department has instructed the school where the teacher is believed to teach to prepare a full report on the matter. Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!

Facebook generated up to US$20bil in Asean ad revenue in 2024, RM2.5bil from Malaysia alone, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA: Social media platform Facebook is estimated to have generated between US$15bil to US$20bil (RM63.7bil-RM84.9bil) in online advertising revenue in the Asean region in 2024, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said in Malaysia alone, Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5bil. He said the overall figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the Asean region. "This is the problem we face – many of the ads they display are scams promoting fake investments or so-called magical products on sale at very low prices – there's no control. "Just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (e-cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups," he said during the ministry's monthly assembly on Thursday (June 12). Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier in 2025. "They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas," he said. On Jan 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users and strengthening regulatory oversight of Internet messaging service providers and social media platforms. The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act 2024 in December, which will be enforced soon. "With the enforcement of the Act, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply. "Issues such as paedophile groups and child sexual abuse material must be eliminated from these platforms and those involved must be brought to justice," he said. – Bernama

Police hunting for man who assaulted lorry driver at Kempas toll plaza
JOHOR BARU: Police are tracking down a man who assaulted a lorry driver in a fit of rage after the latter honked at him at the Kempas Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway last Sunday. The incident, which occurred at about 2.30pm, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media. Johor Baru North police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said the video was first uploaded on Facebook before spreading widely online. "Police detected a video on Facebook showing a scuffle between two men at the Kempas Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway," he said in a statement today. Balveer said a report on the incident was lodged the same day, June 8, at about 5.35pm, by the 31-year-old local man who was the victim and also the lorry driver. "Investigations revealed that the incident took place at about 2.30pm at the Kempas toll plaza. While waiting to pay the toll, the complainant honked at a Proton Wira in front of him that remained stationary despite the barrier having been lifted. "In response, an unidentified man exited the passenger side of the car and demanded that the complainant open his door. "When the door was opened, the man punched the complainant multiple times on the face and head. The complainant then defended himself by kicking the man out of the lorry," he said. Balveer said the incident is believed to have been triggered by the man's dissatisfaction at being honked at. He added that the complainant suffered pain at the back of his head as a result of the assault. The case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for affray in a public place, which carries a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, upon conviction.

Norizan Yahaya was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : An online health food seller pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of posting offensive content on the authorities' investigation into GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) on his YouTube channel last year. Norizan Yahaya, 62, was charged with making and transmitting content deemed offensive with the intent of annoying others via YouTube account 'Zam Yahaya Official' between 2pm and 6pm on Sept 15, 2024. The content was accessed at the cyber and multimedia crime investigation division of the commercial crime investigation department at the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Wangsa Maju at 8pm the next day. Norizan was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction. An additional fine of RM1,000 may be imposed for each day the offence persists after conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman proposed bail of RM10,000 in one surety. However, Norizan's lawyer, Asiah Abd Jalil, asked for a minimal bail amount on the grounds that her client was the sole breadwinner supporting an unemployed wife and not a flight risk. 'My client sells health food online and earns approximately RM2,000 a month. He has five children, two of whom are at university,' she said. Judge Norma Ismail granted bail of RM7,000 in one surety and fixed July 11 for the next case mention.
