Gerik bus crash: Teacher investigated over offensive comments made on victims
IPOH: An investigation is underway against a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik. Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a police report was filed on Wednesday (June 11) at about 4.40pm concerning a Facebook post by a user named "Khalid Yunus," which contained distasteful comments regarding the university students involved in the fatal crash. The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, he stated on Thursday (June 12). He also urged the public not to share content that could cause distress or disrupt public peace. The Facebook post sparked public outrage after alleging that the 15 students died in disgrace. It further claimed that the victims were not among the faithful, as they had passed away while still owing debt to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation. The post has since been deleted, and the teacher involved has issued a public apology, claiming to suffer from schizophrenia. Perak education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said on Wednesday (June 11) that initial investigations confirmed the Facebook account responsible for the insensitive post belonged to a teacher at the school. The state Education Department has instructed the school where the teacher is believed to teach to prepare a full report on the matter. School told to prepare report on teacher's remarks on UPSI bus crash
Perak executive councillor for education Khairudin Abu Hanipah said the district education office contacted the school's principal, and a counsellor was sent to instruct the teacher to remove the post. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Perak education department has directed a secondary school to submit a full report over a teacher's social media post about the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. State executive councillor for education Khairudin Abu Hanipah said an initial investigation confirmed that the teacher, whose remarks in a Facebook post sparked outrage online, is employed at the school. 'As an educator, I deeply regret the actions of this individual, who made inappropriate remarks regarding the tragic incident involving the UPSI students,' Bernama quoted him as saying. The post, made under the name 'Khalid Yunus', claimed the students had 'died in disgrace' and were 'not among the faithful' because they allegedly owed money to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). Khairudin said the district education office contacted the school's principal immediately after the post went viral, and a counsellor was sent to request the teacher to remove the content. A check at 8.10pm yesterday confirmed that the post had been deleted, he said. The teacher has since apologised publicly, claiming that he suffered from schizophrenia. The fatal crash occurred early Monday morning at Km53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, when the students' bus overturned.

Don't exploit their grief: Police urge respect after Gerik bus tragedy
IPOH: Police have reminded the public not to circulate unverified or offensive content related to the tragic crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, which claimed the lives of 15 individuals. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin urged netizens to act responsibly and to refrain from exploiting the tragedy for personal gain. "I would like to advise the public to remain respectful and not take advantage of this heartbreaking incident. If you had been at the scene, I believe members of the media would agree that it was a truly devastating event. Our focus should be on preventing similar tragedies from happening again. "I understand that this matter will be discussed at cabinet level today," he told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. He was responding to public outrage over a Facebook post by a user identified as Khalid Yunus, who had written: "15 UPSI Students Die in Disgrace!" and claimed that the students were "not considered believers because they died in debt to PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund Corporation)." The post has since been deleted, and the user has issued a public apology. Noor Hisam said that no formal reports had been lodged regarding the post. "We have a team actively monitoring such content. If any posting crosses the line or if a police report is lodged, we will investigate accordingly," he said. It was earlier reported that the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway.
